I built a nether portal in my house, then went to the nether, later, when I decided to go back to the real world, it created a new portal out in the middle of the ocean somewhere. Luckily, it was just a quick flight back to my house, but still, What if it had spawned me further out?
Here's my theory, it could be a ghast that spawned near a Nether Portal in the "real" world (as of 1.5 they can do that) and that's how you can hear Gravel.
As we all know, zombies have one of the most useless drops, feathers. They are used for making arrows, but you can get feathers easier from chickens, and skeletons drop arrows anyway.
I personally think that zombies should drop moss, which you can surround a cobblestone with to make Mossy Cobblestone. Or maybe they could also drop bones. What do you think?
They wouldn't make a mob drop COMPLETELY useless. It will have a use in the future or maybe they already do..... it was just in one of Notch's secret updates and we haven't found it yet? Doubt it. But I will keep all my slimeballs.... once i find some.....
The extra characters and Tech levels sound interesting. The only problem is you can't get to the Nether with only stone tools. Unless you are allowed to craft Buckets.
I think he/she is not understanding how to make a portal. It's quite simple. First, just make a 4x4 square out of obsidian, but you can cut out the corners if neccessary. Second, light the inside on fire with flint and steel. There you have it, portal to the nether. Beware of ghasts while you are in there. They look like Jellyfish. I would bring some cobblestone, as it is apparently immune to ghast fireballs. And whatever you do, DO NOT ATTACK THE ZOMBIE PIGMEN! They will not attack you, but if you attack them, then every one of them within 32 blocks will attempt to attack you. Of course, you could always play on peaceful, then you wouldn't have to worry.

Lol that's actually funny and makes a bit of sense. But zombies actually drop feathers because Notch doesn't know what they should drop.

I use that ALL the time whenever I actually look for caves with none in sight. Sometimes though I just stumble upon them.
