You can actually mix a AMD card and run an nvidia card as a Physx card but it requires some hackery. Also if you got a fancy motherboard with lucid hydra you can mix graphics card of any kind.

You are not going to need 750watt, Nvidia suggests a 500w and that is counting in a CPU ram and 1 hard drive when they calculate that. You should get something like a 650w and be fine.

We aren't aloud to buy parts we get the giant slabs of stuff and that's it.

Robots also look like you are not limited to such small sizes of bots.
Also what size are your teams we got 3 people on my current one.

BEST is vastly better then FIRST that is all.

I had never heard of FIRST until fm87 mentioned it on here one day. Best is better because we don't have the other countries infesting our American competition (joking btw)

Im going to hold onto my 560ti and wait for the 700/8000 series in 2013, as by then dx12 should be out and the gpus will be much more powerful and more of a worthwhile upgrade then now. But the 7970 is such a sexy card.....

I doubt the 8xxx series will use dx12 Win9 might use it just basing on Microsoft past but 9 wont be out tell 2014. Plus i think we will see the 8xxx series be to 7xxx much what the 6xxx series to 5xxx. 6 was improved arch of 5 and 8 will probably be an improved arch 7 die shrinks for graphics have been taking larger jumps notice we never got 32nm gpus. the next one we get will probably be 20nm.

Also any one know what happened to XDR ram it is vastly better then GDDR and AMD was planning on using it definitely would have given them a massive advantage over nvidia because rambus has issues with them.

Well it depends if you are running a triple monitor set up the 7970 does that very well with all the extra ram it has.

The gtx 590 is just a bit slower then dual gtx 580s but in a triple monitor set up the 590s extra ram will help.

The 7970 does very well in high res gaming something that you would be doing with triple monitors. granted the 580 gtx is higher clocked then one in the 590, the 580 would only have 1.5 gigs of ram in a sli set up and vram is important in a highres gamming set up.

We can only hope, especially with the bulldozer disaster from AMD....

I'd rather not have the IB CPUs end up being $300-400 for low and mid range, and the 7000 series being $400-600 for mid and high range.

DON'T SAY IT WON'T HAPPEN PEOPLE, IT'S HAPPENED BEFORE DURING THE PENTIUM III-4 ERA!!

Fermi was originally a big heavy mess when it released much like bulldozer but look at fermi now it is very efficient. Granted AMD does not have as deep of pockets as Nvidia.

Nvidia Kepler will probably be better then the 7xxx series AMD always releases first then Nvidia releases something better 5-6 months after.

Trinity should be interesting piledriver arch cpuy with a GCN 7 series gpu on board.

At the performance range no. But since they are both the top end single GPU's of their line then I feel you can i some cases. (tomshardware compared them in their 7970 reviw).

Edit: The 5870 actually beat the 6970 and 7970 in DirectComputeBenchmark OpenCL. Link.

That is in one benchmark and probably some error within the application its self. It losses 100% of the time comapred to the 7970 in anything else. The 5870 is 40nm 100% it is going to use more power to get the same performance of something at 28nm.

GCN is also vastly different then AMDs past VLIW arch. Once games and drivers optimize for it better we should see some pretty good improvement on the 7970.

I'm curious what power consumption will be like on the even higher end cards.

Well we got the dual card and there new zero core is supposed to reduce crossfire power consumption.

Hopefully nvidia does not have any setbacks this card needs a completion product to bring price down and the current expectation from nvidia is late march to get there new cards out. AMD Graphics division seems like the only part of AMD that can release on time.

No the 7970 uses more power than the 5870. The 7970 has a 6 pin and 8 pin power. The 5870 has 2 6 pins, its a very power friendly card for the power it gives.

The 5870 does not compete with the 7970 the 7850 will be in the 5870 performance range. At least that is what my guess will be we gotta wait for the retail release to find out.
