I was talking about the Steambox, not the Ouya.

You mean you felt compelled to say the boxes that can run Windows and use x86 can run games that run on windows and x86?

Except it doesn't make sense for console manufacturers as now then they would have to create another API for their console.

Anyways, I wouldn't want Mantle to dominate everything. I want Mantle because it could push innovation, but if it destroys DirectX and OpenGL, it will stagnate and no longer innovate. Competition is why I want it. GL and Dx aren't pushing new boundaries.

Unless Mantle is the API they are using right now.

They aren't competing they are serving different goals. If DX and GL aren't competition to push innovation why would Mantle change anything?

It is Android it is pretty open it is possible to run any ARM supported Linux distro.

I still think it would make sense for the industry to have Mantle used on both.

It probably is I am sure as more details come out developers might spill the bean on what the APIs are.

The Xbox will use DirectX. The PS4 will be using OpenGL. That doesn't mean anything though. AMD is designing the API around their GCN, which both consoles use. The APIs on the consoles are already sufficiently low level for developers, but being able to write in Mantle gives another option to them. It will also make porting the games between consoles that much easier if they don't have to rewrite the engine in both OpenGL and DX. It makes sense to write in Mantle then, and have one of the others as a backup for any non-AMD systems on PC.

Again, it depends on whether or not MS and Sony will allow Mantle to be used. That's something we'll have to see moving forward.

Neither Console is running OpenGL or DirectX right out. The Xbox implements a custom version of DirectX the PS4 uses a low level API.

"One of them is the absolute low-level API, you're talking directly to the hardware. It's used to draw the static RAM buffers and feed them directly to the GPU," Norden shared. "It's much, much lower level than you're used to with DirectX or OpenGL but it's not quite at the driver level. It's very similar if you've programmed PS3 or PS Vita, very similar to those graphics libraries."

Sony also mentioned a wrapper to allow high level API to run on this low level API. So it is probably a OpenGL ES wrapper because the Ps4 supports OpenGL ES

The Ps4 APU also allows DirectX HLSL to run on it just like Mantle.

Consoles don't need Mantle, Mantle is a low level console like API for Windows. Unless of course MS is being a jerk and is requiring all devs to use Dx11.1 on the new console.

Source for Microsoft forcing them to?

The Ps4 for all we know could be using Mantle there is no reason why the consoles can't.

..., i have no problem with touchwiz, its the best custom ui ive ever used, and i WOULD, reccomend it, excessivly, custom roms are one of the stupidest things ever :/ and as for the no case, thats also a very stupid thing to do, even if the phone can survive it, that doesnt mean its safe to NOT, have a case :/, i got a cheap, otterbox rip-off case for my Galaxy S3, i have no problem with it, and i have dropped my phone a few times, nothings wrong with it, also, as for build-quality on the s4 in the drop test, they never showed turning it back on, all they said is it turned off, so for all they know, it could still work absolutley fine, so i call BULL****

Also, my dad has a motorola, he plans to never by anything made by them again, because he's had so many error's, that refused to let him use the phone, withotu a restart (and no, its not a doa, he already tried that, the device he recived back gave him the same problems :/

Best Custom UI. All the others are trash too so Touchwiz is the golden turd.

The screen popped out of the case that is not good vs the Motorola that took only surface damage.

I would love to hear why you think Custom roms are the stupidest thing ever.

Sounds like the problem was on Layer 8.

You guys know Volcanic Islands are not supposed to be against Maxwell right?

And Bulldozer was supposed to compete with Nehalem and Steamroller with Sandybridge. Kaveri was supposed to compete with Haswell but now Trinity is.

Nothing is set in stone and things can get delayed very easily.

Mantle only (so far) works on GCN cards. That means amd 7000 series up ONLY. If they didn't get it working for 6000 series and below AMD cards then you can bet it's going to take a hell of a lot of work for nvidia to get it working, and even then the implementation might not be the same way as AMD cards.

GCN is a lot closer to Nvidias arch then GCN is to VLIW. AMD could have also been too lazy to implement it for 6xxx rather then unable.

    Another thing on mantle.
While this may get amd slightly ahead, nvidia can also use it. It is an open api.

AMD still controls it. AMD has already worked on its implementation if Nvidia does decide to use Mantle it could be some time. It is not about AMD gaining an advantage it is about improving the industry and moving beyond these high level APIs.

AMDs audio thing is supposed to not harm performance. So it is possible the main GPU arch is the same they would have some extra features. I will see the official specs before I am 100% sure it is a rebrand.

Yep, it may not run MODERN games at least with the earlier versions, but it seems like it should be able to run older games like Civ 4, which honestly, if you're able to hook up a keyboard onto it, would be amazing. Even if it was limited to controller only, it could work for other games.

The Ouya is ARM based you aren't going to run Civilization 4 on it period. We aren't talking not only moving operating systems but entire processor architectures. The Ouya lacks DirectX and will lack Mantle it only has OpenGL ES.

Eh, it's low budget and open source. Same general idea will apply with this.

Except for the fact the SteamBox hardware will actually be capable of running things. It is X86 based hardware vs ARM in the Ouya.

When will price be announced and proper game benches be available?

I think the designs look nice, in the end it sits inside your case if they cool fine who cares.

This was mostly a software announcement Mantle is a pretty damn big deal.

But consoles have a firmware OS. That is what sets them apart.

SteamOS is probably just a fork of Ubuntu. It will be very easy to "hack" therefore.

Storing the OS on flash memory vs the main harddrive is not much of a difference.

No reason for them to base it on Ubuntu there is a better chance it is Debian based.

The OS won't be needing to be "hacked" it is open source and the bootloader is wide open it is probably just Grub.
