If you are running a 64 bit system make sure you have the 64 bit version of Java. I am pretty sure Java default download is 32 bit. Also run Spybot Search and Destroy. You will be surprised what effect these illicit programs have on your lag. Also keep your system defragged

From time to time I have found myself in the same possition. Tools almost used up and seriously lost in a cave system. I have developed a technique that can get me safely out. I assume you know to look straight down, jump and place a block under yourself, repeat this step and you create an elevator of sorts.

1. Go to the highest point you can find in the cave.

2. Tunnel straight up. Yes you can do this safetly if you listen for the sound of lava and water. Go up 4 or 5 block and then create a space to the side in case you screw up and dig into lava or water. You'll need this to escape, I usually go 4 or 5 blocks to the side.

3. If I hear water or lava I usually go back down a few block and tunnel away from the sound then start heading upwards again.

4. Sometimes you will tunnel into a cave. I have tunneled into a cave and end up right next to a Creeper. Sssssssss Boom, $%#^&*$%@#, thank God for armor...................

I am having the same issue. I would love to try the game out before I buy it. I know my system specs are fine, but you never know. Anyway demo won't run so I guess I'll steer clear of the game for now. I'll check the thread now and again to see if a solution has been found.
