Thanks for the reply! I didn't realize there was a 30 second grace period.

We don't live in the same house, so I just run a server out of my house. I didn't know about the 30 second grace period, and I didn't think about restarting the server is worse comes to worse. Good ideas. Thanks!

posted a message on Minecraft Is Too Easy (MITE) Mod

Hello, new here and loving the mod. I just wanted to ask if there was a way to disable the disconnect penalty on a server somehow. I'm only on with my brother and I, and for various non-game-related reasons we've found ourselves locked out of the server a few times. It's kind of an unnecessary feature for us that has caused a bit of annoyance.

posted a message on Server seems laggy even with good ping?

I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to networking. I ran into a problem and I can't figure out what's causing it. I just run a personal server that hosts only a handful of people at a time, it's just for my family.

First I set up a modded "Better Than Wolves" server and it seemed to work find. We decided later to reboot the server with hand-picked mods using forge. So I set up a forge server with around 11 mods and it seemed to work fine. I was able to log in locally (from within my own network at home) and play just fine. But later I realized playing on it from outside the house it's very very slow, unplayable even. Updates are very slow and you just rubberband everywhere constantly. My brother confirmed he has the same problem playing from his apartment. Strangely, though, ping seems fine (~50-100), even though it seems extremely laggy.

So my question is what could be causing this problem when:

a ) the BTW server worked fine in all cases

b ) playing locally from within my network works fine

c ) ping is reasonable in all cases

My first instinct is that one or more of the forge mods are causing problems. I just don't understand what the nature of the problem could be. Thanks in advance for any advice!

    EDIT:

Just in case it matters, I'm using forge for MC v1.7.10 with these mods:

    - AnimalsPlus
    - Battlegear2

    - BattleTowers

    - BiomesOPlenty

    - CogInTheMachine

    - DragonMounts

    - Dungeonpack

    - Farlanders

    - HardcoreEnderExpansion

    - InfernalMobs

    - PrimitiveMobds

    - StilHungry

Not to be rude or anything, but a lot of these suggestions are from people who probably don't understand what they're suggesting. Re-writing minecraft into c++ would be as difficult as taking the King James Bible and translating it into another language. And, like others have said, it won't necessarily result in a more optimized program.

In fact, c++ is a downright pain the butt to write in compared to Java. At least at my work (as a software developer) even the old timers shun c++ and older languages just because Java and c# are so much easier to work with. Well, I guess this is opinion, others might disagree and be OK with manually allocating memory.

Anyway, these suggestions are senseless. Until Minecraft 2 comes out, Java it will be.

I'd simply add a butt load of mobs, and stronger mobs at lower levels of the world. And rare mobs, along the lines of witches, but cooler.

More biomes (was very happy with last update!), and more rare biomes like the mushroom biome.

Way more biome-specific mobs, and get the farm creatures out of the freaking jungle and stuff like that.

In games like minecraft, quantity is quality! More diversity increases the possibilities exponentially.

posted a message on How do I play with myself?
From what I know and tried, you can't do it with the new front end. I used to play in an offline lan world with my brother by having him play in offline-mode with my account, but now it seems they've blocked you from even doing that. We'd have to both buy accounts, which seems a bit ridiculous to me. I never expected Mojang to wield the DRM axe in such a way.

Dudes, I dunno where you guys work or who your parents are, but $27 is a lot of money for me. Of course I'm recently married and going to college.

Anyway, I'll personally just have to wait for the offline button to play with my brother. I own the game, but he used to come over and play with me on my home network using the offline button.

posted a message on What are they adding? Well NOT the modding api!
    Quote from WDSnav91

...find myself playing this game less as they add more stuff that I don't use and not very many things related to the core game elements. At this point I start to wonder who cares about updates; it's not like their adding anything useful.

Who cares about the updates? Not related to core game elements? Man, I love all the crap they are adding. The more crap ,the better! It's like legos. A simple block is by itself uninteresting, but 100's or 1000's of different simple blocks can be amazing.

And core game elements? What exactly are the "core game elements"? Minecraft is played hundreds of different ways, anyone would be hard pressed to nail down "core game elements".

posted a message on Survival can, and should be, improved (Part 2: Electric Boogaloo)
I like a lot of these ideas, but some of them aren't as important to me.

The main thing I'd like to see change is scope and diversity. There has been a recent "streamline" mentality going around in gaming where every game is simplified and cut down, supposed "quality over quantity". It works with some games, but in a sandbox game, quantity DOES matter. At least to me.

I love all the updates that have added block and biome diversity, but I would love to see more mobs. A lot more mobs. And different types of mobs depending on biome and depth. I'd like to see more dangerous mobs the deeper you get (sort of like cave spiders, but more based on depth). I'd like the maximum depth to be increased too, maybe make a different style of cave as you get deeper. I'd like to see more passive mobs and passive/aggressive mobs like wolves (crocs, lions, bears, overworld dragons, etc.) I know there are mods for a lot of this, but I like to play vanilla, and I really enjoy these kinds of additions.

Depends on how far you move it, and how close other portals are to the nether-side portal.

If you have a decent grasp on portal mechanics, you can manipulate them with little risk. I'll give a short rundown that may help.

When you enter a portal (either in the nether or the overworld), it translates your coordinates to the other world (at a 1:8 ratio... for example, x=64 z=80 in the overworld would turn into x=8 z=10 in the nether), and searches for an existing portal within 128 blocks of that spot. If it finds one, it sends you there. If it doesn't find one, it makes a new portal at the new coordinates and sends you there.

So basically, as long as you don't move the overworld portal more than 128 blocks from the nether-side portal's coordinates, the portals should remain linked. This gets more complicated if you have more portals in relatively close proximity, as it searches for the closest portal, and that 128-block-radius might overlap. Also, if you move your portal too far, it may link to the same nether portal, but the nether portal could end up creating a new portal when you use it next.

Messing with nether portals is always fun :)

Does the merge mean you can't play offline anymore?

You can still play offline. In the final release, at least. I haven't played the snapshots. It also means that, if you want, you can invite a friend to play with you in your single player worlds.

    Quote from redstonevet90

Lol, one whole second?!? That's rough man. I can see why you're so upset...

A 1 second delay is horrendous. I mean, imagine if we all had a 1 second delay on our reflexes when driving a car. Everyone would die on the road. Do you play games online at all? A 1000ms ping is unacceptable and definitely worth complaining about.

On a side note, it's nice to see a few posts from people who know programming and know what they're talking about. Hoorah.
