I worked on this a bit over spring break and added 3 more difficulty settings for multiplayer games, a switch to double item drops for multiplayer games, and more lava blades. Give it a try!
In the works for a future version: refined item drop system, easier resetting.
Let me know if you have any suggestions or feedback!
Looks really cool, I might try it! Nice work with the wiring.
Thanks! Let me know what you think if you do, I didn't get much of a chance to playtest it...all I know is that difficulty 4 on hard game difficulty is next to impossible if you don't get lucky with item drops. I'm still working out the kinks on the drop system to make it less random, but since the arena proper is more or less complete, I though I'd share it to get some community input.
Looks really awesome! I bet you put a lot of work into this. I'll try to check it out later.
Thank you, 'a lot' doesn't begin to describe it! I built this thing in 1.1 under the assumption that spawn eggs would work like chicken eggs when shot from dispensers. Obviously that wasn't the case, so I had to re-wire a lot of it to get the dispensers to ground level. If you try it, I would really appreciate any feedback, good or bad!
Features include:
-Controllable difficulty level (1-6) - single player or multiplayer
-Random item drops
-Floor traps
-Falling lava blades (toggleable)
-Semi-random mob spawning
Higher difficulties are very chaotic...bring your A game. To reset, I recommend making copies of the world file and replacing it after each session...the item dispenser contents is limited, so a long session won't leave a good selection. When I have time, I will refine the system so that resetting in this way isn't necessary until a good amount of time has passed.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback, especially multiplayer!

This is my first major redstone project...I estimate that I used upwards of 2km of wiring.
Still, great job. The detail is exquisite. Are you going to add people?
I saved you a considerable amount of frustration, then (not to mention time!) Thanks for the positive feedback. I considered adding the people, but it would have come out looking ugly, IMO. I kept the details to a macro level, I mainly made this to examine the architectural qualities of the structure. I wish I could have made it match up perfectly, though...
If someone wants to take a shot at adding details or making something more of this, let me know...just be sure to tell me what site I can host a world save on
Most of this is accurate to the picture. I had to make a few alterations to allow for lighting. Surprisingly, it all flowed together pretty well, although there are parts where I had to cop out and make changes for the sake of geometry. I also left out a few rails...if they were included they would have obscured too much.

Side question: What's a good site for uploading minecraft worlds? None I have found will allow 6-10 MB uploads.
Eh. I'd say no. It really takes away the element of control, as rather than being able to control roughly were mobs spawn, they'd just be flung into a random place to appear.
Too much control is boring. Besides, the spread on a dispenser isn't THAT great (unless the items are shot from a good height). The spawn area isn't too random in the case of chicken eggs. With the current system, all spawners would need to be within 3 blocks of the ground to prevent mobs from taking damage, whereas if mob eggs functioned like chicken eggs, you could place dispensers wherever you want and still (roughly) be able to control where a mob will spawn.
I built a pretty damn cool arena in 1.1 (~2km of redstone) in anticipation of 1.2's addition of dispenser-fireable mob eggs. Sadly, I logged on to find that a dispenser simply spawns a mob on the block in front of it, rather than shooting it out like a chicken egg (which, I might add, has the exact same functionality that I'm asking for). The problem is that the dispensers in my arena are nine blocks above the floor, which causes all spawned mobs to take three hearts of damage before you can even touch them. I really don't want to re-wire a kilometer of redstone (not to mention screw up the façade of the arena walls that I designed with the dispenser placement in mind).
I realize that it's only relevant to creations like this, but honestly, allowing spawn eggs to work the same way chicken eggs do would add a fun element of randomness to spawned mobs (due to the spread of the dispenser).
I don't know anything about coding, but doesn't the code for this already exist in some form?
Save here. Clench was the seed for this world, back in 1.8. Forgot to mention that I included several parkour elements, like the cliffs to the left and right of the pillars. Also hid a bunch of chests, was gonna make this into a survival map, but I'm lazy. Plus, the place is too damn bright to spawn anything! Thanks for the positive feedback!
These really look great, good level of detail...and yes, I would say that you're good at sails, considering you have to build them out of cubes...
As for suggestions, I remember seeing a mod (zipline?) that had placeable rope/rope ladders that were affected by gravity - that could be useful for rigging. Also, I didn't really like the glass blocks on that one boat.
Temple thing I've been building over a few months, couple hours here and there.
Here is the save if you're interested - Temple

New features will be constantly added as Notch and co. see fit. This applies to the full game as well, so there will always be changes.
All I can recommend is that you learn to use MCEdit so that you can load your base into a Minecraft version 1.X world when the inevitable updates come around.
Bows are used more than swords, TBH. The whole "killing by dismemberment" thing wouldn't work too well for bows. Also, I find this to be heavily inspired by Dead Space.
As for the reacting time and sneaking, I agree to some extent. Honestly, though, killing monsters is already easy. Why make it easier?

Thanks! As soon as I had the idea I knew that I wouldn't be the first. No one had done it at this scale, though (that I could find)
Much appreciated!
