Well if you are referring to plugins APIs and their implementations. It is my intention to ensure dimensional doors has no conflict with SpongeForge (implementation of the SpongeAPI).
Hm...that's odd because I haven't seen any dimensional doors spawning at all. That, plus the client crash.
Do you mean rifts into a dim door dungeon spawning in world? If so, the infrastructure and loading of dungeon schematic files for them exists but aren't implemented yet. Our focus has been on dimensional doors themselves at the moment.
Well if you have some ideas of how I can improve. Feel free to give some. I just had some inspiration to get it working. The animation itself is just a first draft really. Even if I go with it. It needs a new better texture. The current one is just a placeholder one I made.
SpongeForge is indeed a Forge coremod, that allows its' own breed of Sponge plugins to be used alongside Forge mods. One of the design principles with Sponge is to try not to break everyone else's stuff, and SpongeForge tries very hard to play nice with Forge methods. You can find more information on it here: https://docs.spongepowered.org/master/en/about/introduction.html
That said, Sponge is in beta and still under development, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. But it does add a nifty new API that can be used to make some developer's work easier, and lets a Forge modded server (1.8.9 and above) add plugins to aid server management. It all works the same way in Single player/LAN too
Waterpicker, if it speeds development, then give it a try. But some will still desire a Sponge-independent version, regardless.
The full extent of what in the API could help out will have to be deduced as we go along. The most immediate usage is schematic API.
Are you ever going to port this mod to later versions such as 1.8 or 1.10?
Yes. Me and Zixiken have been working on a port since start of summer. The mod currently runs and render correctly but issues with how the original author decided to store door data has occured. We don't have the time to fully figure it out as of now due to various offline obgligations.

There is a mod that adds the red dragon along with all the discarded ideas for minecraft that never got added. Its called the Rediscovered Mod.
Here is its curseforge link. https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/rediscovered
If you want dragons in general, I recommend Wyrmroost. They are doing some cool stuff with them.

This is what you are looking for. Its being developed and by its nature will not be able to run NMS using bukkit plugins. https://forums.spongepowered.org/t/pore-returned-a-sponge-implementation-of-the-bukkit-api/14935

As of now, our plans is to move forward in versions after getting 1.8.9 port stable
On another note, I created a Discord for Dimensional Doors awhile ago.
For those who want to join it, here is the invite link. https://discord.gg/zCnV3Pc
