2XMM2 posted a message on Nostalgia-CraftPosted in: Resource PacksI once decided to make a texture pack featuring the old textures from before the Halloween update in 2010, and Nostalgia-Craft is the result!
There's two versions of the pack, an Alpha and a Beta version, both aim to capture some of the feel from Minecraft Alpha and Beta.
More screenshots
A mountainous region
The good old cobblestone texture
Reunite with your favorite flower species
Yes, they're also in the Beta pack, same with the deliciously colorful dyed wool spectrum
Various old-styled blocks (the chest is a proper block in the current version)

vexx32 posted a message on [!READ THE OP!] Buying Minecraft Gift Codes for Others!Posted in: DiscussionREAD THE GUIDELINES
BEFORE MAKING A REQUEST
If you do not read the entire post, I reserve the right to ignore you, whether you're trolling, flaming, asking for codes while you already have a paid account, or just being irritating.
Read the entire post before making a comment or request.
Thanks ^^
I had something like this set up over on SporeBase forums. I keep a little thread there to let new members know what I'm doing, and it directs them here. They're a small forum, but I ended up buying several people gift codes. (Screenshot of the "Gift Codes" section of my profile page below the list for a small proof).
Please note, before you try to say I'm a scammer or something like that... I am not asking you to participate in any scamming survey, join up for a website, or anything like that, OK?

The Happenings
Got an interesting idea the other day, from a user in my Riddles thread round here. It is this: if I put up a riddle once a month, and give you all a week to solve it, the winner gets a code instantly, regardless of their position on the list. People who have not yet got onto the list are also able to enter, but while I will give at most three hints to people who are on the list, I will not give any hints to those not on the list.
To be honest, it probably isn't that much of a handicap, but I'd prefer to give users on the list already a slight advantage. If you can solve the riddle, you get the code. Simple as that. However, because I like to make it a very tough challenge, I'll not indicate if you're on the right track or not (i.e., I'll only tell you whether you're right or wrong), apart from the three hints (which will be the same three hints for each person).
To avoid clogging up this thread, all answers to the riddle must be PM'd to me. I'd prefer it if each member opened one private conversation with me, and then replied to that each time, rather than drowning the rest of my inbox in new conversations each time they have a new guess. The riddle will be posted in this section of this thread.
Also, you may not go and post this riddle anywhere else in order to try and get help from others who use that site. Last time, someone posted it to a Yahoo! Answers site, but posting it to any site or forum is a violation of the rules. You must not use the Internet to get help for these. You may gather a few friends or family (as in, people you know outside of the Internet) and try to solve it together, but once more the riddle must not be spread around the Internet, at least until the competition is over.
If I hear of anyone doing it again, that person will be disqualified from all future competitions of this nature. We can and will find out if you do. The Internet is a very easy place to trace people. If the person who did it is on the list, their entry will be removed. I cannot abide cheaters. Cheating will not help you. Do it fairly or not at all.
You are all forbidden from posting this riddle anywhere on the Internet for any purpose whatsoever until the competition has ended for this riddle. I am keeping a private list of the riddles, the associated hints and the answers for each (which will be released either after the one-week period, or as soon as someone guesses the answer), so that you may confound your friends and anyone else you meet on the Internet in the event I come up with an incredibly difficult riddle. If you want any of the previous riddles, you need only ask.
IF YOU FAIL TO READ THE RULES CONCERNING THE RIDDLE (YEAH, THAT TEXT JUST UP THERE), DO NOT BOTHER SENDING ANY GUESSES. THE RULES ARE BINDING, AND I WILL NOT TOLERATE THOSE WHO BREAK THEM, KNOWINGLY OR NOT.
By clicking the spoiler and revealing the riddle, you acknowledge you have read and understand my rules. Break them at your own peril. I shall have no trouble tracking you down, for the other hopeful guessers you have wronged will not be too pleased with you either. If you want to clarify the rules, PM me.
Riddle Solved by dinofire.
Riddles and rhymes, rosemary and thyme;
Fire and smoke and endeavours sublime,
Elements all aflame with passage of time.
Air shimmers with lack of heat and earthen
Flame ascends to high echelons of heaven:
A new soul appears as ancient clock tolls 'gain.
Knowledge, power, sight and Death;
All can be altered save till ending's breath,
When even Time goes all but deaf.
Bound and caged in bars of iron and steel,
Rules and laws to bring them to heel;
To make them harm and slowly heal.
I do all these things and more, although
My full extent rises like fresh dough
'Till the end of all, lost 'mongst Time's flow.
What am I?
Mojang have begun selling Minecraft in stores in the United States! You can now buy Minecraft "prepaid cards" which contain a gift code and can be used to buy Minecraft. If you're unable to buy Minecraft over the Internet, and you live in the US, you can go into a Target, Walmart or Best Buy store and purchase a copy. More information here:

How it works
One thing I have been seeing a fair bit of is people picking at little inconsequential details in others' posts. Don't be tempted to do this. It only starts arguments, which we do not need. If you do, however, find something in another person's post or you find some solid evidence that they're lying (or just have some suspicions about the request), feel free to PM either myself, or Sgt. Traveler about it.
If you want a gift code, there are only two requirements - you must not already have bought Minecraft (requesting codes for other people is OK, but they'll need to contact me through PM or e-mail to prove they actually exist), and you must also have a good reason why you cannot buy the game (whether it's financial trouble, your parents won't let you buy stuff over the Internet, you don't have any money, etc).
Each fortnight, no more than one person will be added to the list... but also that if no requests show a reasonable display of effort and care, there is the possibility the nobody may be added that week. In that case, I will simply not add anyone to the list, and the list cap effectively goes down by one.
I have recently seen an increase in people PMing or emailing me, requesting gift codes. Do not request via PM or e-mail. Please, just post on this thread. It is a hundred times easier to just check the thread for requests rather than having to sort through PMs and such. If you have trouble with posting or posts not appearing, talk to a moderator or administrator, or post in the Forum Help section.
Do not contact me through PM or e-mail unless absolutely necessary, you are considering donating/helping out, or there is something else you wish to discuss privately.
You may, however, contact me via PM if you wish to talk to me privately, but that should not (for the most part) be necessary. In order for me to consider you for a gift code, you must reply with a request for one. I will keep a list in the OP with people who've asked and haven't yet received their codes, and I'll also keep a list of people I bought codes for.
The gift code will be sent to you via PM, unless you specifically ask otherwise.
There will be no scamming or anything like that involved, you don't have to sign up for anything. This is a free gift I am offering out of generosity. I am hoping some others will follow suit, but we will see. For now, it's just me. Sgt. Traveler is our resident helper when am not around and he'll be able to answer just about any question (although keep in mind that he is not a moderator, so if there's any rule-breaking, just report it). Feel free to ask questions here, or via PM, whichever you prefer.
If any others want to buy codes for people, they can PM me about it (or post here) and they can buy codes on a predetermined basis (or just one for a particular person they choose).
They themselves will send the code to the recipient, and I will ask for screenshot proof (from their minecraft.net or account.mojang.com account page) that they have given the code to the person before removing them from the "Waiting List".
I will remove members as soon as I send out codes to them. I am very busy these days, and frequently forget to remove people, so I've decided to remove them as soon as I've sent them the PM containing the gift code. If I see that a member who is next in line for receiving a code has been inactive for at least a month, I will simply remove them. This is moving at snail-pace as it is, and I have no desire to make people who are willing to follow my rules wait any longer than necessary.
If a person has not redeemed their code after a week's time of sending the PM, I'll give that code to another. This applies to active people as well, if they suddenly become inexplicably inactive. This is simply to keep things moving smoothly. In other words, check every few weeks where you are on the list, maybe every week if you're near the top to avoid being passed by.
Now that that's all explained, I ask one last time, please do not troll, flame, spam or otherwise degrade the quality of this topic. If you have ideas for improving my methods, you may suggest them. Sarcastic/Non-Serious/Degrading ideas will not be tolerated. Thanks.
One more thing. I myself will be buying codes on a basis of one per week. I'm not a millionaire.
Don't get annoyed if it takes a while. I may make exceptions and buy several codes at once on occasion, but don't count on it too often. I no longer have a job, so you guys are lucky my government has unemployment support payments.
If you wish to request a code for another person besides yourself, they must contact me if at all possible in any way. Either by e-mail (joelpfrancis[AT]gmail[DOT]com) or through PM on the forum, but they'll need to contact me. If they have not contacted me after several weeks, they may be removed when I next tidy up the list.
If special occasions arise (unable to contact me for some time, etc.) and I am notified, I may make exceptions.
All gift codes given through this will come from my own Minecraft/Mojang account (Vexx32 | [email protected])
Share and Enjoy!

Requesting Guidelines
You are in no way obligated to use these guidelines as any more than a guide, but don't complain if we tell you to look at these, as we will often have good reason for doing so. With many thanks to Enquent, who devised the majority of this, these are the guidelines for posting a request for a gift code.
N.B.: It is not necessary to include the headings. I would recommend you avoid doing so, but if you wish to, feel free.
== Short introduction ==
1-2 sentences about how you found out about this thread, how you found out about Minecraft and what you thought of it. You may include mention of mods, custom maps, texture packs, or anything else you have found thus far.
== Request body ==
3-5 sentences in paragraph form, within which you should include your age, why you are unable to purchase Minecraft, your financial or life situation that doesn't allow you to, other possible ways you've attempted to get Minecraft. Are you in school, university/college, high school? Do you live with your parents/on your own/with friends/family? Are you barely making ends meet living on your own?
== Closing == (Not required)
A polite closing, a 'thank you for reading', followed by your forum username or in-game name never hurt and looks nice making the whole post seem complete and finished.
== Further Information == (Not Required)
How many requests you have submitted thus far, one or two of your previous requests (not in a quote - preferably in a spoiler tag), and any other information not mentioned above you think we should know.
## Note ##
Please do your best to use clear English, with proper spelling and grammar. I am able to translate other languages using a machine translation and get the general gist of it, but it's a poor subsitute for what you yourself can probably write in most cases. If you need assistance in common spelling or grammatical errors, I will simply direct you to these two excellent comics which address the common problems we see around the internet these days:
http://theoatmeal.co...ics/misspelling (commonly misspelled words)
http://theoatmeal.com/comics/semicolon (how to use a semicolon)
The length of each section above is only a guide and you may expand upon the amount of writing in each, but refrain from shortening them, as the guide above gives minimum amounts to mitigate the amount of simple, one-line requests.
## Formatting & How to Use it ##
I have noticed that some people have taken to using a small amount of formatting. I have no problem with this, and I do encourage it, for it makes your main points stand out and improves the readability, but only if used in good taste.
Do not:- Use colors like yellow or a light grey that are difficult to read on the forum's white-grey background.
- Split or break words with formatting (e.g., freedom). This breaks the flow of the sentence and makes it very confusing to read.
- Format everything. Doing so just makes it harder to read, and more annoying. Sure, it stands out, but it's like shouting at someone incessantly. Nobody likes it.
- Use a non-standard font size for your entire post, or a large part of it. Make sure it is of a readable size!
- Use excessive amounts of paragraphs. They should be used to group sentences together that share an idea or focus.
- Start a new paragraph for every single sentence or every two sentences.
- Use formatting to emphasize your main points.
- Use formatting only as required.
- Use a variety of colours, if you feel the need. It helps break the monotonous look of a post and makes it easier to read. Not necessary, so don't go overboard.
- Take note of anything you could yourself use that you notice in the requests I quote, and use it well.
- Read over your request to double-check that it is readable and easy to understand.
- Use paragraphs to break your post into sections, as outlined in the main Guidelines section.
This will, of course, be mainly applicable for those requesting a gift code for themselves, but if you are requesting one for someone else, merely modify the template as needed.
Once again, this is not required, but it will help make your request look 'professional' and easy to read. Two pages of poorly written requests means nobody gets added to the list!
In addition, anyone found to have copied any part of someone else's request is instantly disqualified from my consideration. The name of the game is effort here, and I will not tolerate people stealing someone else's story.
Words have power, and I will not permit them to be stolen.

Feel free to make your own banners, but try to avoid confusing people; don't put things on your banners that don't match with what I do, or else we end up with silly arguments and lots of confused people. Don't make false claims, and do not misrepresent me, please.

Frequently Asked Questions- "If someone is removed from the list by their own request, can I take their place?"
- "My request was quoted, but I'm not on the list?!"
- "Why haven't you quoted my request?"
- "I think someone is lying in their request! What do I do?"
- "How long will this take?"
- "What do I do if I didn't get quoted/picked?"
- "Can/Should I re-post my request?"
No. If someone requests their own removal from the list, you may not take their spot. It is unfair to just about everyone else on the list who has been waiting. There is one exception that I will allow. This is if the person no longer wishes to be on the list wants to give up their spot to another, instead of me simply removing their name. This exception exists for two reasons. First, because it is a request from them directly, without others clamouring to take the spot. Second, because it would amount to the same thing as them not telling me and then just giving the code to any other person (typically a friend or sibling).
Back to Frequently Asked Questions
"My request was quoted, but I'm not on the list!"
If your request was quoted, congratulations. You've submitted a good-quality request. This doesn't automatically mean you're going to get onto the list, but it does mean you have a good chance. I only pick one person out each week to go on the list, so that everyone can have a chance to post a request. If you were quoted but not added, then please re-post your request. Do not quote your original/previous request; the forum doesn't like nested quotes, and removes them. This can make it confusing, and also means that I can't show off your request again properly. Either amend your original request, or put it somewhere in your post with any additional information you wish to include.
Back to Frequently Asked Questions
"Why haven't you quoted my request?"
I only quote the best requests, in order to show everyone what has a high chance of getting into the list, but I read every request. If you weren't quoted, then it generally just means your request wasn't good enough. If you think I have in fact overlooked you, then feel free to let me know; either just post again or PM me, preferably with the request included. I do my best to read each and every post on this thread, so it is very unlikely that I miss any, but it can and occasionally does happen.
Back to Frequently Asked Questions
"I think someone is lying in their request! What do I do?"
PM either myself, Sgt. Traveler or Enquent about it. Quote the suspect post, and give your reasons and/or evidence against it. Be clear and concise. If we decide your suspicion is well-founded, we will investigate. It is preferable you do not pick apart someone else's request in the thread here, unless we have specifically asked for public opinion on the matter, since it can quite easily start a mud-slinging contest.
Back to Frequently Asked Questions
"How long will this take?"
Let's do the math. I myself buy usually one code per fortnight, whilst Enquent typically buys around two codes each week (Enquent's had to stop buying codes for the moment due to a change of circumstances). That's around 2-3 codes every week. The list is around 430 long, so we'll work out how long it takes for you to get from bottom to top. 430 divided by 3 gives 143 weeks. Divide by 4 to get 36 months. 65 divided by 12 gives around 3 years. So yeah, long wait... :/
We do what we can to shorten it, but it got out of hand a while back, and we haven't managed to totally reign it in again just yet.
N.B.: This is no longer accurate, but it should still give a rough idea. I'll come back and update it every so often, but till then I'm sure a little math never hurt anyone.
N.B.: This is no longer anywhere near accurate. I am currently buying codes on my own, and can only presently afford a code every two weeks. It's going to be a long wait, short of me suddenly getting rich.
Back to Frequently Asked Questions
"What do I do if I didn't get quoted/picked?"
If you weren't quoted, your request was not overlooked. It simply means your request needs a bit of work. Read the guidelines and see what you can improve on. If you were quoted and not chosen to go on the list, see if you can add anything to your request and make it clearer and more concise. A little formatting may help, but use it wisely. Re-post your request to be considered for the next week's addition to the list. Only one person from each week's requests will be added, and I do not dig back beyond a week (not beyond my last decision post).
Back to Frequently Asked Questions
"Can/Should I re-post my request?"
If I have added someone to the list, you are required to re-post your request if you still want to be taken into consideration. If you were not quoted, you will need to improve your request, and even if you were, it's probably a good idea to try to refine your request a little more. Read over the guidelines, and perhaps add a touch of careful formatting.

Contact Information
First and foremost, just post on this thread. I read every reply that is posted, and I reply to almost all of them where a reply is warranted. If you feel the need to contact me privately, you can also PM me here on the forums, or email me. I can also be contacted on SporeBase Forums, where I am known by the same name. My email address is [email protected]. If you wish to contact me about helping me out with this, please PM me. I will answer your questions and we should be able to make some sort of arrangement. Since Mojang has recommended circumventing the restriction with multiple accounts, I'll probably give each person access to one "gift code" account at a time, through which they'll buy codes. This way, everyone knows they're going through me, and the people helping can keep their 5 gift codes on their account for their close friends and such.

ChaosGuardian posted a message on Did the Terrain Become BORING? (UPDATE 6/5/13 - 1.7 is a biome update?)Posted in: Discussion*NEWS*Update 6/5/13
Word has come out that 1.7 may include biome changes. Stay tuned.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Adventure Update was supposed to give us more motivation to explore, but instead the motivation was taken away. Here's why:
Many of the features included in the 1.7.3 generator that brought the game to life were unexpectedly removed when 1.8 hit our clients. Due to this, monstrous amounts of variety are now non-existent in Minecraft. Most of the problems with the generator today are due to limitation. With that being said, every seed is now basically identical, meaning there is WAY too much predictiveness in the terrain:
LIMITED HEIGHT VARIATION
For instance, we can only find mountains in the Extreme Hills (EH) biome and the X-hills biomes (ForestHills, DesertHills, etc.) In the EH biome, height changes are forced, ALWAYS leaving us with a sloppy mess of turquoise spam reaching to the heavens. In the X-hills biomes, the same thing happens, except height changes hardly ever reach "mountain level."
So why is this bad? Although this brings us joyous mountains, they are never spread apart, or landlocked by flat land. Thus, if you find a mountain you are nearly 100% sure to find more and more. Also, when you see turquoise grass, you are 100% sure to find mountains. It's predictability at its greatest. This is bad because the pre-1.8 generator contained more height variation. You could literally find any type of landscape. Just look at the variety of landscapes you could find in pre-1.8 in comparison to current generation:
As you see from this picture, the only way to achieve max-height terrain is to visit the EH biome. No, X-hills will not allow you to do this. What we do know is that EH biomes and X-hills together give us a somewhat decent array of variation, but 1.7.3's array was a LOT bigger. Want proof?
In this image, not only is there an overhang and a thin rocky formation, but there is flat land isolating both of these. There is no way to represent full random height variation in one picture, but this may give you a hint as to what it may be. What else can we bring to the plate?
Beta 1.8+ babies may not know what this is. Here is a picture of the most popular seed before the terrain was ruined. Glacier was its name. Now, this isn't the best picture of the Glacier Mountains, but I will attempt to describe it. Imagine a seasonal forest with mountains sprawling across the whole biome. This may seem like the equivalent of today's ForestHills sub-biome but it is not! An area such as the Glacier Mountains was not something you would see every five minutes. It was found by seed-hunting -- another damaged factor due to the 1.8 terrain changes. Ladies and gentlefish, this seed may just describe what height variation is all about. You see, if you exited the area of the mountains, there'd be terrain nothing like it. You would see occasional hills and land easy to build on! And guess what? This all happened within biomes of the same name. There were no limitations nor restrictions.
Now before you start replying (and I urge you not until reading ALL of this post), let me show you what the 1.7.3 generator could do, even though people may think it wasn't possible.
The picture above IS Beta-1.7.3 terrain, not Release-1.3.2. Yes, flat land was possible. REMEMBER, we are not asking for the previous generator! We want the current one improved so that everyone is happy!!!!
FORCED ENDLESS CAVES
Another flaw of the current generator is the underground generation. There are simply too many caves, and this problem is existent in every world, just like our height variation problem. Often, I find myself bored in-game, because within the first five minutes of a newly created world, I'm already set for life because I found a cave that extends on and on. Literally, we can now find stacks of iron ore and enough diamond to last us half a year within the first hour of gameplay!
So why is this bad? It is understandable some people may like having extensive caves, as do I, but not all the time. Minecraft always needed more challenge, and this cave problem definitely worsens the issue. Back in pre-1.8, there were caves of varying sizes -- the same amount of variety that the mountains had. Now we are limited to seemingly endless tunnels and caverns. Don't you miss "conquering" a cave in less than 10 years? I know I do.
Don't believe me? Look at this:
You could say "that's just one area in one world." WRONG. Look at this:
Want more?
This is absurd. The people who enjoy extensive caves are sure happy, but the people who want caves of varying sizes should be enraged!
SLOPPY SAND BEACHES & ABSENCE OF GRAVEL BEACHES
Another problem with current terrain generation includes the formation of beaches and the absence of gravel beaches. Gravel beaches were an undeniably cool feature to pre-1.8 generation, and Mojang had no reason to remove them when the Adventure Update hit our clients. Remember the "404 Challenge?" Well now it's impossible to have anything merely resemble it (except for the extensive cave system, of course). Sandy beaches are now always sloppily generated, therefore lowering the rate of variety within every world.
Why is this bad? It is obvious that the removal of gravel beaches upsets many people, as it does to me. Sandy beaches on the other hand definitely need work. Take a look at this current beach:
..Well that was awkward. The generator seems to just replace random coasts with sand blocks. Face it, pre-1.8 had things like this as well, maybe not as common, but definitely existent. However, pre-1.8 also had good looking beaches! This is what we call VARIETY -- when things stop reappearing over and over again.
Ok, admitted, the picture above may be a little biased. Let's throw in a picture that an opposer gave to me:
This is someone's example of a perfect beach. You've got to be kidding me. First off, two things need to be pointed about before getting into the specifics.
1. This is set on the Large Biomes option. Good terrain should be available to those who play on the default setting!
2. This "beach" is adjacent to a jungle biome. Beaches next to jungle biomes tend to look a bit nicer in comparison to those that are adjacent to other biomes. Therefore, this picture is a little biased itself.
As said before, the main problem with today's beaches is that they are always going to have this form. Only one or two horizontal lines of sand are actually on sea-level. Again, we had crappy beaches and good beaches in 1.7.3 and this is good because of the variety it brought to the game. We all shouldn't be able to reach preffered terrain everywhere we go, right? That's the challenge and fun!
Take a look at this picture of a pre-1.8 beach:
Now that's what I call a good looking beach! Look how many consistent sand blocks are actually on sea-level. Compare that to the one or two lines of consistent sandy-coasts in current generation. Remember, pre-1.8 also had crappy beaches, which is a good thing because it distributed variety into every world.
Keep in mind, this thread is NOT about the existence of oceans, the "RPG" features, the existence of the new world generation features, biome size, random placement of biomes, and possibly more. We also do not endorse the return of past generators or a new world option. If you want to discuss these said features, you are in the WRONG THREAD.
WHY MODS ARE NOT THE SOLUTION:
Quote from Shreaders »Mods are a temporary fix to a long-term problem. Most of the terrain altering mods out there do not even live up to the standards that are put forth in this thread. They all are attempts to bring back 1.7 map generation into the current terrain. If you're asking Isn't this what we want? No, and this means that you did not read the full thread. So please go back, re-read the thread, and then re-post.
What we want done to the terrain is have it tweaked to add more height variety per biome. We want the structures and everything that was added since 1.8 except for the flat, dull, boring land. Mods do not fix this as they create ugly jumbled up and chewed up land masses all over the place (Which those types of land masses can also be neat if harnessed and used correctly by mojang.)
Did not know that? Re-read the thread, and re-post.
So for those of you who keep coming on here advertising different mods that we can use: 45 people have mentioned the same thing before you: so do not bother as it will not silence us. We feel the current map generation needs to be altered to satisfy all of Mojangs player base not just 25% (and yes those numbers are accurate .. the poll for this change is at 75% yes and 25% no) Did not know that? Simple.. Re-read the thread, and then re-post.
Tell Mojang about this issue!

Quotes From Different Players:
Quote from Mattressi »
I'm a little confused that this isn't a bigger complaint: I mean, swamps look ugly, sure and there are a few bugs here and there, but BIOMES ARE ABSOLUTELY RUINED. Seriously, I can't even play anymore - I'm just so bored by the landscape. I like mountains with trees (regular, pines and birch) and snow. I can have either mountains OR snow OR trees. Awesome
Seeds are completely pointless now - all they do is determine your spawn point. Might as well just use one seed and ask at the start if you want to start in the biome with trees, the biome with mountains or the other biomes with nothing in them.
Has anyone tried tweeting jeb about this (I'm pretty sure Notch isn't working on Minecraft anymore)? To me, this is the single largest issue with Minecraft currently. Varied and crazy terrain was one of the greatest things about Minecraft pre-1.8. Now, Minecraft's terrain is more boring than in real life. Realism I could possibly stand (in a game with creepers and which originally became popular because of its crazy and interesting randomly generated terrain), but it simply isn't realistic to have no snow on any mountains, to have no trees (one tree per chunk doesn't count - I'm talking forests) anywhere where it snows, to have almost completely flat terrain everywhere except in one specific area which has huge mountains and nothing else.
Some have said it's this way because of NPC villages - if that's the case, I'd much rather have no NPCs at all if it will bring back an interesting world.
Please, can someone here who uses twitter contact jeb and link him to this thread or ask if he realises that Minecraft's terrain generation is horrible and boring now, and whether he intends to fix it? If Mojang think it's fine as it is and don't fix it, I honestly won't be playing anymore. Bring back variety and craziness or lose those of your customers who enjoyed (above ground) exploration, building in unique locations, searching for the best seed, admiring the views and even just doing other things in a world that didn't feel like a void.
Quote from Strottinglemon »The problem I have with it is: EVERY. WORLD. LOOKS. EXACTLY. THE. SAME.
Quote from Homem Pigman »Moving mountains to a single biome was simply the worst idea in all of gaming history. And even those look bland.I want the extremely random worlds that made Minecraft be awesome!
Quote from Mamrok »The terrain is a lot LESS complex than it used to be. What made the old generator more complex is, that the
physical terrain overlapped with all biomes, so that we had a lot of combinations. The biomes now are very homogenic and are seperated from each other with surgical cuts. 1000 blocks of flat forrest *poof* 1200 blocks of flat desert *poof* 1000 blocks of treeless extreme mountains *poof* 1000 blocks of flat forrest. very complex...
Also the additon of ravines and rivers doesnt have anything to do with how the terrain and biomes are created. They are just superimposed over the landscape.
Quote from giraffeartillery »This more realistic terrain generation is incredibly bland. Once you see one biome, you have basically seen them all.
The old one was varied and the biome mixing created some nice landscapes. Also spawning on a beach made it feel like you washed up on the shores of a unknown land. I wouldn't mind some modifications to the underground how ever.
Quote from Domino »The sizes are perfect, but they need more variety in each one.
Quote from Flygonair »I was gonna post a hate comment, but once i looked at the screenshots i realised you were right! I haven't seen any awesome looking mountain formations since 1.0.0! All i've been seeing is the same old plains, swamps, and pine forests!
Quote from MineCrak »I used to be ok with there being some caves, but now the entire damned underground is swiss-cheesed with them... Now I hate them.
Perhaps the people who love the endless caves are playing the game in Peaceful or Creative mode. Caves are a whole different matter in Normal difficulty. They are constantly getting in the way of my mines and underground constructions.
I would rather have fewer but more epic caves or actual caverns then an endless ant farm of caves everywhere I dig..
Quote from xlea99 »I kind of used to hate people who said the terrain was boring... but it is REALLY flat. I guess I have to agree now. While I'm in love with oceans and mushroomlands and jungles, there is not as much interesting stuff in the world. I really wish that jeb would put back in what notch took out: Mountain landforms.
By that I mean not a mountain biome, but allowing allowing mountains to spawn in any biome on their own. That was one reason that the 1.7.3 generator was so friggin amazing.
If Jeb made it so that mountains could spawn in the same sort of way as lakes, then things would get a lot better. Then, mountains would be spawning in forests, giving us back that good-ole' tree filled mountain range we all love. It could spawn in Praries, to allow villages to be at the top of the world. It could spawn in deserts, to give us back those sand falls. They could spawn in oceans, so you could find just a random huge mountain in the ocean, kind of like a survival island. Heck, they could even spawn in swamps. Allowing for some pretty cool crap to happen.
Also, Jeb needs to put back the gravel beaches. I loved the look of those, and they just made things look so good.
Quote from Wiggycat314 »I have been a heavy Minecraft player since Alpha 1.2.0_02 when I first started playing. It wasn't the mining or the monsters that urged me to play; it was the sense of adventure. Most of the time, when I make a new world, I don't plan on building, I spend most of the time exploring the unknown and seeing what Minecraft has to throw at me.
When the ability to use seeds came out in Beta 1.3, it was then that my sense of exploration really started to rise. So many words and letters to type, so many worlds, but so little time. I loved it, each world had it's own uniqueness to it. If you managed to find a very nice world, you knew that this world was yours and no one else had one like it (unless you shared the seed).
When 1.8 came out, it really hit me hard. There was little to no variety in the worlds anymore. Seeds (in my opinion) were then obsolete. What's the point of sharing seeds when every world looks the same.
Quote from Creative_Explorer »It is a fact that the terrain has less variety in it than before.
Quote from Frogging101 »I don't know why, but there are way way way too many caves. I don't recall there being this many before 1.8. I like exploring caves, and it's cool to navigate the enormous mineshafts. But only to a certain point. After spending hours and hours in a seemingly endless cave system, it just gets boring and repetitive. The cave system that I've been in since I started this world 3 days ago is just way too big. I dug a staircase mine type thing for a bit, just to collect a few ores to get me started. Within about 5-10 minutes I found my self in a cave system. 3 days later, I'm still in the cave system. I've seen about 3 ravines, destroyed 2 cave spider spawners, gotten lost in 2 different abandoned mineshafts and maybe 20 different caverns. I have half a chest full of coal, and the other half is iron, gold and a few diamonds.IT NEVER ENDS.
Quote from Owl Exterminator »I love enchanting, I love the new biomes, I love all of the new features, and there isn't one I would ever want removed from the game. I miss the old world though. The new world isn't the same, it doesn't even compare. I'm sorry to all those people I insulted back when the adventure update went live. I'm sorry because I know why you were upset.
I wouldn't be against Mojang hiring a guy on full time to do nothing but work on the terrain, as long as it gets done.Quote from DrakBadgerwaffles »
Also, is the Bukkit team actually still part of Mojang? I thought they were hired on and since then I've heard very little out of the progress they are supposed to be making.
Here's a rundown of how I think they are splitting their efforts. I'm thinking Bukkit got there, wanted to finish working on the Mod API, opened up the core program and realize that it was just a bunch of empty classes that would require a ton more time than they figured. Then 1.4 was held back to compensate.
Meanwhile, Jeb and Dinnerbone get to work on RPG stuff because Dinnerbone really only knows how to work with entities and Jeb is really only good at picking up the slack that Notch created when he would have his brain-farts so infrequently since the beginning of 1.8pre.
Then Notch leaves after delivering terrain so uninspired that he forgot to add roses, snow, and mountains (Really!? How can some people think current gen is better than 1.7.3 when it didn't even launch with ROSES and SNOW!?), Jeb takes up the torch of the entire game, makes beaches and X-hills their own biomes because he has no idea what mess of cobwebs Notch put up, and here we are with vertical beaches, endless biomes of flat terrain, and mountains that are so forced that even their heights are the same...
And some people still think 1.8 and up is better than 1.7.3? The development process alone is horrible enough to be deal-breaker.
Quote from xBella »Gah. I honestly can't stand the 1.3.2 terrain generation at all anymore. If I play singleplayer, it's always with my 1.7.3 .jar because it's just an eyesore to look at the current terrain generation. The terrain of 1.7.3 makes it seem like a whole new game. Honestly, I love jungles and swamps but I would trade it and NPC villages for the 1.7.3 terrain. That doesn't mean I want Jeb to just re-add 1.7.3 terrain and dump jungles and swamps, I just want him to improve it.What happened to the savannahs? It bugs me so much to see a desert next to a jungle. I don't even know why they removed the temperature system. I miss the beaches and the gravel beaches that were everywhere. Beach houses were possible back then. If you wanted a proper beach house now, you'd have to have a tiny 2x2 house just to fit it in the beach. It also annoys me a lot when people tell me to use Large Biomes if I want better beaches. Why should I have to use Large Biomes to enjoy a feature that was once perfect? We don't need the 1.7.3 terrain generator back, we need the current one improved.

xSmallDeadGuyx posted a message on [1.5.1] Elemental Creepers v3.2.1 - D'AAWWWWWWW!Posted in: Minecraft Mods[1.5.1] Elemental Creepers v3.2.1I know I've had a lot of coloured text up here in the past, and I haven't always kept to my promises. Computing coursework hit me pretty hard with the shear amount of documentation needed to be made for it. Exams are over, every possible coursework I can have is over, and a good few weeks until I should have any more major work forced upon me. I will try to get friendly creepers fixed although I don't promise anything as they probably will need a re-write (minecraft and forge seem to change so much and I just don't keep track of it enough). I do still have ideas for new creepers and you should hopefully see those added soon.
Changelog:
- Fixed friendly creepers - Made D'AWWWWWWW baby friendly creepers!
Breed friendly creepers with flowers to produce this:

Like this mod? Support it!
This mod has been out for a while but exclusive to yogbox, mostly due to my own laziness. Anyway I finally decided to make a thread for it and get screenshots and explain everything.
Scroll to the bottom for older versions of the mod.
Configuration:
If you wish to change various things with the creepers, you can find a properties file in %AppData%/.minecraft/config called mod_ElementalCreepers. It contains options for just about everything in the mod, all the creeper spawn rates, radius of effect where applicable, power where applicable and the chance of ghost creepers spawning after killing another creeper.
The Creepers:
Fire Creeper
Spreads a large radius of fire
Water Creeper
Creates a big puddle of water
Earth Creeper
Creates a large brown "monument"
Ice Creeper
Freezes water/lava and spreads snow
Lightning Creeper
Strikes nearby entities with lightning
Psychic Creeper
Launches all nearby entities
Magma Creeper
Creates a pool of lava, leaves a trail of fire as it walks. Only found in the nether
Ghost Creeper
It's explosions harm/launch animals as normal but doesn't destroy any blocks
Friendly Creeper
Tameable like wolves. Feed it gunpowder to tame, feed it flowers to heal. Right-click with an empty hand to make him stay. When tamed this creeper gets a heart on it's chest and follows you around. When close enough to monsters, he creates mini explosions which don't hurt him or you or destroy blocks.
Cookie Creeper
Explodes in a shower of cookies!!! Killing him won't yield any cookies
Illusion Creeper
When close to player splits into 5 creepers all identical, only 1 will explode.
Light Creeper
Same as earth creeper but with glowstone.
Dark Creeper
Destroys everything with fairly high light value in it's radius.
Reverse Creeper
Flips the blocks in it's radius (ones on bottom go to top, ones on top go to bottom).
Spawn Egg Recipes:
Here are all the recipes for spawn eggs, but I'm not going to tell you which creepers they spawn. See if you can guess them all (some are obvious, some are not).
The recipes are also shapeless, so the items can be put anywhere in the grid to create them. The spawn eggs in the pictures are creeper spawn eggs

How do I build an awesome base in Minecraft?
That's a question oft-asked here on the Minecraft Forums. There's many, many threads with people asking what they should put into their base, to make it more awesome. So here's a comprehensive list of things to remember when building your base, and what things you should have in your base. I realize there are other threads like this, chiefly the one started by user A Blind Moron, but this one is even longer and more detailed than most of the others.
Please note that all of the projects to make in your world that are detailed in here are useful for Minecraft purposes. In this thread, I won't give you ideas for building castles, or lighthouses, or mansions, etc. All of the ideas in here automate your Minecraft experience, and all of the projects have an actual use in your world that automates your Minecraft life even more.
Do you watch youtube channels like Etho and Docm77, where they have completely automated worlds and every cool invention possible? Possibly want an even better world than them? This list is for you, too! Many of the ideas brought up in this thread will give you ideas for cool things you could make in your world!
So, let's begin! Open the spoilers to find out whatever you want to learn about.
Caution for people with slow computers, opening all the spoilers will give you a block of text 15 pages long. Don't worry, though, pictures are wrapped inside individual spoilers.

What to Put in Your Base
-Seed farm:
One can easily make a seed farm by having a patch of grass in your base that's above your head. Bonemeal it from below, and then use a piston-controlled stream of water to bring the seeds down onto your head!
-Wheat farm
Bread is a good food source for everyday Minecrafting. It revives your hunger bar 2 and a half bars, and is stackable for easy carrying. Wheat is stackable too, so you can have a few stacks of wheat and a crafting table in your inventory, and be set on food for quite a while. Open the spoiler for an example of a wheat farm.
-Melon farm
Melons are a good food source in the game. Although they only heal one hunger bar, they are easily farmable and plentiful once you have melon seeds. Of course, though, finding the actual seeds is harder than a lot of other sources of food. Open the spoiler for an example of a melon farm!
-Pumpkin farm
While Pumpkins aren't a food source, and aren't useful for too many things, they are good for making into Jack-O Lanterns as a cheap substitute for Glowstone, or put them on your head to avoid Endermen! Here, have a picture of a pumpkin farm, wrapped inside a spoiler.
-Mushroom farm
Mushrooms! Yay! Mushrooms are incredibly useful in Minecraft. Bonemeal a mushroom to turn it into a Giant Mushroom, perfect for making a cute little house out of. Or, bonemeal mushrooms, and then break the mushroom blocks to harvest regular mushrooms! Make some bowls out of wood in your crafting bench, and then craft mushroom stew on the fly (it doesn't require a crafting bench). Open the spoiler for a photo of a giant mushroom!
-Sugarcane farm
Sugarcane is a lot more useful than it's made out to be. It can be crafted down to sugar, which is useful in potions and for making cake. Also, with raw sugarcane, you can make paper, then books, and then even bookshelves, which are useful as decoration and enchanting! So, make a sugarcane farm today. I don't really think you need a picture for this-- just put sugarcane around water, and set up a piston harvesting system.
-Tree farm
Ah, the tree farm. A staple of Minecraft life, tree farms supply you with the essential Minecraft material, wood. Whether you want a simple tree farm, or to get fancy with exactly spaced trees that can be cut down with an Efficiency axe while sprinting, a tree farm is a must so that you don't have to go and tear down your neighboring forests every time you want some wood. No picture for this one either, because designs vary quite a bit.
-Netherwart farm
If you want to use potions, a good source of Netherwart is a must. Since Netherwart will only grow in the Nether, this needs to be made in the Nether. Use an automatic Netherwart farm, or just create a manual (but very cool-looking) farm, using end stone and vines on the walls. Your friends will wonder how you designed a farm so well! Open the spoiler for a picture of a Netherwart farm.
-Flower farm
Same as the seed farm, using the same principle. You'll get flowers from that farm, too.
-Cactus farm
Besides making green dye for green wool, cacti in Minecraft are really useless. But you should have a farm for them anyway! Cactus farms are probably the easiest automated Minecraft farm to make, because they don't require any pistons to collect them. Just put a block that will knock off the cactus when it appears. Extra points if you build the farm in a giant model of a cactus, made out of green wool. Here's a pic of a simple farm:
-Cobblestone generator
Ah, man, cobble is common, right? You get far too much of it from mining. But make a cobble generator anyway! It's useful for building large projects involving smooth stone. Just collect tons of cobble, and smelt it in your furnace room using blaze rods from your blaze farm. (More on this later). No pic for this one, because cobble farms are fairly easy to make.
-Retractible workbench
Do you want an automated Minecraft world, where everything is convenient and easy to do? Look no further than a retractible workbench! If your base is underground, you might want to consider having these around your base. Using a piston and some redstone, make a workbench spring out of a wall when you press a button. Look it up on YouTube if you want to know how to do the wiring. Sorry, no picture.
-Railway
You need a railway to get around, right? So make one! (Or two, or five, or a million!) For a totally automated world, you should have a railway going to your stronghold and all your experience farms! You should also have railways in the Nether, going every place you could possibly think of!
-Enchanting room
Enchanting rooms are a must for enchanting your diamond tools with Level 50 enchants. Put a row of bookshelves 2 blocks high around your enchanting table, all one block away from it. Put the enchanting table in the middle of it. Optionally, put a glowstone block under the enchantment table to spread light in the room, because light passes through enchanting tables. Be sure not to put any paintings, torches, etc. between the table and the bookshelves, because that will stop you from getting high level enchantments (because it deactivates some of the bookshelves). If you like, put an awesome texture pack on that will make the room look even better! Click on the spoiler to see one example.
-Potion room
Every good automated base needs an automated potion room. One good setup is the one that Etho uses in his Etho's Lab Minecraft LP. It's hard to describe, but buttons on the walls with signs describing the items used activates dispensers with items that float down to you, making the potionmaking experience nearly automated. All you need to do then is put the ingredients in the brewing table. For more information and step-by step instructions on how to make this, look
-Storage room
Every good base needs a storage room! Go wild with this room. You should decorate it and make it look as cool as possible. Look at the "Block Combinations" section of this thread to get some ideas for building a storage room. If you really want to get fancy, make an auto minecart system that carts certain types of supplies to you at the press of a button (or the flip of a lever).
-Sleeping room
Yawnn... you're sleepy, aren't you? All of that hard work in the mines is really getting to you. So build yourself a nice bedroom! You could make a canopy bed using half slabs beside the bed and a roof over, or make a bunk bed using the "floating bed" trick. Or, if you reside in an above-ground home, make a bedroom looking out onto a Minecraft ocean! Open the spoiler for a picture of a nice bedroom.
-Room for wolves
Do you have nice wolf pets? Make them their own room! Using different colored wools, make little beds for them carved in the wool. Then give them nameplates using signs. Decorate the room, and you're done! Now your canine friends have a little sanctuary, just for them.
-Testificate room
Gotta catch em' all! Testificates, that is. Collect a full set-- all 6 different types of Villager, from farmers to priests. Using Minecarts, transport them to your base, and then give them an environment to roam in (inside your base, of course). I got this idea from Etho-- watch him do it right
-Pixel art
Have a boring wall in your base? No ideas on how to decorate it? Make some pixel art on the wall! One example is in the spoiler.
-Creeper farm
The truth of the matter is that most people need a lot of TNT for Minecraft projects. If you are a Minecraft pro, TNT is really useful for hollowing out large areas underground for making temples, or whatever. But for TNT, you're going to need a lot of gunpowder! Creeper farms are relatively easy to make-- make a regular mob trap, and have the collection tube be in the sun. Use glass for the collection tube, and regular mobs will burn in the sunlight, leaving only creepers behind. K.O. them for gunpowder. It's a bit hard to explain, but check out some of Etho's early videos to see his mob trap.
-Skeleton farm
Once you find a skeleton dungeon, you can easily make a skeleton farm. Make the skeletons drop 23 blocks if you want an XP farm (with added drops) or 24 blocks if you just want to be able to AFK and get insane amounts of arrows and bones. Here's a blueprint of a skelly farm, using a dungeon:
-Spider farm
You can make a spider farm, using a spider dungeon, for plenty of string and spider eyes. If you're looking for a Cave Spider farm design, see the Cave Spider section, a few paragraphs onwards.
-Zombie farm
See the Skeleton Farm section.
-Slime farm
Look up a design on YouTube for this. Not too hard to find one.
-Ghast farm
Look up design on YouTube.
-Zombie Pigman farm
Look up design on YouTube. I recommend docm77's Iron Lung design.
-Enderman farm
An Enderman farm in the End, using either Etho or Docm77's design. I know I reference both of them a lot, but they have worlds that many people want their worlds modelled after, because of all their automated designs for farms and traps.
-Cave spider farm
Designs on YouTube are plentiful for cave spiders. Xisumavoid's tutorial on these is fairly clear and easy to follow. (I'm not related to his channel in any way, shape, or form; I just like his tutorials. Same with any of the other YouTubers listed in this thread).
-Blaze farm
Use Etho's design. Find it on YouTube. This design has been imitated by many other YouTubers.
-Magma Cube farm
This is pretty hard to make, but it's possible. Look on YouTube for a design. This won't be a fully automatic farm.
-Sheep farm
-Pig farm
-Cow farm
-Chicken farm
-Squid farm
-Mooshroom farm
Look on YouTube for these designs.
-Snow golem creator
Using pistons to push the blocks needed into place, you can make a snow golem generator. Look for designs on YouTube for this.
-Shooting range
Have more arrows from your skeleton trap than you know what to do with? Build a shooting range to test your skills and accuracy in Minecraft shooting! Bonus points if you have a scoreboard that's automatically operated by redstone when you shoot the target. Open the spoiler for one example.
-Block museum
Do you want Minecraft to have a goal? Try and make a block museum! Create a room in your base, with a slot for every legit obtainable block in the game. If books ever become writable in, chronicle your adventures to find each block in a book next to the block. Or, you can post your story on signs in a secret piston-opened room behind the block museum.
-Giant mine
Of course, this is a given. Every base needs a mine. But what if you're bored of the same old stone caves? Take some glowstone, some soul sand, some leaf blocks, some netherrack, and any other interesting blocks and decorate the caves around your house! You'll actually enjoy walking through the caves near your base to get to that new unexplored area, and people will gasp when they see the cool caves.
-Record farm
Now, with the newest Minecraft update, you can get all of the records by getting a skeleton to kill a creeper. There's plenty of designs on YouTube for a record farm, so just look it up. Then, after you get all of the records, make a record room in your base with tons of jukeboxes and chests with all the records! Come into the room whenever you're feeling a bit musical, and play your favorite tune in Minecraft. (My personal favorite is cat).
-Music room
Look at my description of the record farm for more information about this.
-Fishing pool
Every base needs a little pool where you can farm squid and catch fish! Fish are a nice-healthy food source, high in Omega- 3's (in real life!) Make a little pool in your base, and decorate the pool room with some tall grass, vines, and sugar cane to give it that tropical feel!
-Charcoal generator
This is fairly simple. Just have a wall of furnaces, making charcoal, outside of your tree farm. This will generate plenty of charcoal, which is good incase your coal supply is running out. Did you know that you can also use blaze rods to cook things in furnaces, besides charcoal? Blaze rods are really more efficient than charcoal, once you get a blaze farm up and running.
-Nether portal room (w/ off/on switch)
Build a cool room for your Nether portal! You probably go in and out of it very often, so why not make the entrance look pretty dang cool? For one example of a really cool portal room, click right Also, you should have an off/on switch for your portal. It is possible to turn a portal off and on using a button. If you don't believe me, look at docm77's world, where he has one.
-Library
Build a mysterious library, using redstone torches and vines to give it a mysterious feel! For optional awesomeness, you could put your enchanting room in the library, too!
-Rain Detector
If you live underground in Minecraft, it might be useful to know if it's raining or not. It's possible to make this; look to see how to make it.
More Uncategorized Ideas
These will hopefully be categorized later, when I have more time.
-Apple farm
-Block combination room (from Xisuma?s World S2E6 ?Glowstone?)
-Light switches in each room
-Piston elevators everywhere
-Mooshroom automatic food dispenser
-Cat farm
-Resupply/Emergency Room (Xisuma?s design)
-Night detector (using villagers)
-Iron farm using iron golems
Block Combinations
A good base has lots of cool devices and inventions, but how do you make your base look nice? YouTubers like Etho and Docm make it so easy to make elegent, good-looking bases. Well, now you'll know how also. The secret is Block Combinations. That is, what blocks go together nicely. In this section, I'll be telling you what block combinations look nice, and also I'll be giving you a couple ideas for designs for your base!
-Obsidian, Lapis Lazuli blocks, and Gold blocks look nice together
-Jack-o Lanterns, Leaf blocks, Birch wood, and Sandstone look nice together
-End Stone and Vines look nice together
-Stone Bricks, Nether Brick, and Glowstone look nice together.
-Melon blocks and Pumpkins look nice together.
-Mossy cobblestone, Bricks, and Bookshelves look nice together.
Some design tips for your base:
-If your base looks a bit plain, put a fence with two vertical leaf blocks on top! Looks like a little tree, and is a good decoration for a boring room.
-Try putting trapdoors on all your glowstone! It makes your glowstone look nice, and it also makes it look like tasty waffles. Mmm! (Please don't sue me if you get hungry while playing Minecraft).
-Don't forget paintings! If you have a boring wall, put a painting on it! Try making a secret door using paintings!
-Try making an awesome bedroom, with half-slabs around the bed and a roof over, to make a canopy bed!
-If you have a Silk Touch pickaxe, mine some ore blocks and make a wall out of them! Try building a room out of diamond ore, or make a pattern of the different ores on the wall.
-Have stations around your base where you can "fuel up". Have splash potions in dispensers that fire at you, making you run faster and jump higher (you get a cookie if you get the reference).
-Just be imaginative! Make your base different than everone else's! Try building your base in the sky, or on a boat, or in the End. Just have fun with it.
Location, Location!
Location is an important part of building a base! Where your base is will dictate what style and type of base you make. A few locations for building a base are:
-In the sky!
-On a boat!
-Underground!
-Overground!
-In the Nether!
-In the End!
-On a cliff!
-Off a cliff!
The location of your base will also influence how complex it is. For example, if your base is underground, you might have the space to hollow out a massive area, and to make a huge automated reed farm. If you're living, i.e.; on a boat, you might only have space for a tiny, manually-harvested sugar cane farm, or even none at all!
Next, I will go over some of the Pros and Cons of building a base in some various locations.
Underground
-Pros: Plenty of space to expand, when you want to expand, you can just dig instead of building, night/day cycle doesn't affect you
-Cons: Never see the light of day.
In the Sky
-Pros: Fantastic view, your friends will envy your awesome floating base
-Cons: Hard to expand your base, hard to reach your base from the ground, need to go down to the ground to mine
In the Nether
-Pros: Extremely easy to obtain materials like glowstone and netherrack
-Cons: Under fire from ghasts, no grass without silk touch, no water so many items are unobtainable unless traveled to the Overworld for
In the End dimension
-Pros: Novelty
-Cons: Barren, lonely, no grass without silk touch, danger from Endermen and Enderdragon before dragon is killed.
On the water
-Pros: Unique, good view of the ocean, go deep sea diving
-Cons: Not much room to expand your base, lonely (unless you bring some cows, pigs, chickens, etc. with you on the boat).
Open the spoiler for pictures of each type of base! Hopefully these will give you some building ideas.
Underground:
In the sky:
In the Nether:
http://minecraftworl.../netherhome.png
In the End dimension:
N/A
On the water:
Of course, most of that information about location is just common sense. Still, it helps some people to see it written down so they can weigh the pros of a location against the cons.
I don't want to inject too much opinion into this thread. I mostly want this thread to have facts. But my personal favorite location to build a base is underground. There's nearly infinite room to expand, carving out new rooms is easy, you can build Minecart rails to get around, night/day cycle doesn't affect you, and it's just really cool to have an underground base anyway!
General Tips
Did you read the entire post up until this point? Want some closing tips; things that you should remember while making your base? Well, here are some!
First of all, try not to imitate the major YouTubers' bases. Sure, many of them, like Docm77 and Etho have really awesome bases, and many people aspire to be just like them in Minecraft. But although imitation is a form of flattery, in the long run, it's going to be more fun for you if you are creative and make up your own ideas. If you build a base that looks a lot like Etho's, you may have fun copying his cool designs now, but later on you'll look back and say, "I wish I had built something of my own creation!" If you just try your own thing from the beginning rather than trying to copy someone else, your base might even turn out better than theirs!
Also, another tip, although it sounds corny, is to never give up. Desigining a home can be very, very frustrating. Working with redstone can be even more so. If one of your creations doesn't work, or is blown up by a creeper, and you feel yourself about to all-out rage, throwing your keyboard across the room at your basket of X-Box shaped donuts on top of your cat (wat?) then take a break from Minecraft! Give yourself some time to calm down, and then come back to building whatever you were building when you're calmer. If you keep building in your enraged state, without taking a break, you'll probably just mess up more stuff, and rage even more.
Don't be afraid to come to the forums for help on your base! If you post a topic asking for help designing something or thinking up ideas, sure, there will be plenty of people that say things like "You must be new here" and call you a noob. But there are a good number of polite people on the forums that will help you out. Just ignore the mean people. And, if you see a thread like this, spread the love and help that person out. Don't be rude to other people! What goes around, comes around.
Although this isn't really a tip (it's just common sense), you need to love what you're doing. You can't build an epic base unless you're in the mood and you want to. I find, personally, that some days, I'm more keen on playing Minecraft than others. Wait to play Minecraft until a day you really want to, and build something then. I guarantee, it will be really awesome. Also, if you start a project in Minecraft and find you just don't love building it anymore, take a break from it! Chances are, you'll come back to the project later with renewed vigor, after you've thought up some good ideas about what to build.
Over all, have fun with it! Minecraft is a game, and is therefore supposed to be fun. Stop doing something if you aren't having fun with it, and don't start something if it seems like a chore and not play. Don't create a complex base with lots of redstone unless you actually like making redstone circuitry. But feel free to try new things! New things often lead to fun new experiences.
Anyway, you're awesome if you read through all these tips. I doubt anyone will, because my writing style isn't particularly entertaining, but I hope you gleaned at least a bit of knowledge from this thread. I appreciate your reading it!

Insurrection posted a message on The "survival" part of the game is bad on a fundamental level.Posted in: Survival ModeI'm sure you've seen quite a few people mention that MC is crap. Maybe they've listed reasons why, maybe they haven't- but outside the MC community, there's a lot of hate towards this game. Specifically, the "main" game mode, survival. Why? Well, that's what this is for- to list precisely why this game is bad. More than just complaining, I'll list (happily) how it can (and probably should) be done better.
As a preface, if you're going to just post "well if u dont like it, dont play it!" or "they work hard on it! why dont U make ur OWN game and see how easy it is!!!", do yourself a favor and don't. For one, I know how hard it is to make a game. Especially one with as much potential as MC. That's what frustrates me- it has so much potential and work put into it, and had a lot going for it early on, but somewhere around alpha it just lost its focus. Anyway...
1a: The reliance on the wiki/community.
Survival mode relies HEAVILY on the wiki to know what to do. Short of a few easy-to-understand concepts (blocks break, right clicking places them, etc), you pretty much don't know what to do without loads of trial and error. Or rather, without the wiki/community videos. This is unacceptable.
It's ok for a game like Sonic the Hedgehog or Mario to not have a tutorial- they're generally easy to play games, and their basic mechanics are introduced within the first stage of their game. Past that, you typically don't need to know much more than moving and jumping. However, Minecraft relies heavily on the user knowing the recipe's for virtually everything- it also relies on them knowing a lot of things like what a lot of the items even do. Nether Warts, Eye of Ender, etc... they're all items you only know the purpose of because of the wiki or videos that highlight updates.
Now, I'm sure one of you will raise their hand and proclaim "But I didn't even USE the wiki! I learnt it ALLL by myself! Check and MATE!". Good for you- you're an exception. The fact is, most people use the wiki or youtube videos to understand what the hell to actually do in this game (again, for survival- creative is a moot point to this rant).
Again, this is unacceptable for any kind of game with complex mechanics. There's no books you can find through the game, no NPC's you can ask for help from, no tips you generally get... nothing. You have to either figure out through mindless trial and error, or consult the wiki. Ugh.
To explain why this is particularly crappy, it's been like this since this game was created. It was acceptable in indev, and even in alpha. But then beta came around... still no form of tutorial or teaching methods. And then 1.0 came out. STILL NOTHING. Sigh.
1b: How to fix it.
Give the player a book straight in their inventory. Something like a "recipe book", where you can place items in your inventory, and see what possible things you can make from it would be nice (similar to Terraria's guide).
This alone would solve a lot of problems honestly, but some more effort towards this would be nice. It doesn't need to be a straight up "Hello, and welcome to minecraft!" tutorial- I can see why that'd be dumb. But there's NO effort to even make it a sort of "Here is how it works, now you try" tutorial like a lot of classic games used to do.
What MC currently feels like is one of those random old NES games that had a lot of weird mechanics, and you needed to consult the manual on how to do basically anything. Actually, it's almost exactly like that. There's a reason games are either simple, have some form of a tutorial/teaching stage, or are terrible.
2a: The difficulty.
Difficulty in the current game is... silly. It's a step backwards in what difficulty should be. Instead of changing game mechanics a bit to actually enhance difficulty, it just artificially enhances difficulty by increasing/decreasing mob health and damage. This is silly, and frankly, lazy.
What's worse, is that you can change difficulty at any point of the game- this makes the entire idea moot. Yes, there are games that do this- that doesn't mean they're doing it right. I mean, why fight through a stronghold when you can set difficulty to peaceful? Oh, because it "gives you the option to"? No. It's a game about survival. Why give me options like this where I can make the journey easier? It's like giving a 12 year old kid the option to cheat in a math test, then hope they don't.
Now, allowing players to change difficulty upon starting a world is fine. It's changing it mid-game that is full-on stupid. Of course, this hasn't been changed since difficulty was even introduced- flat out stupid, lazy game design.
2b: How to fix it.
-Make health and mob damage the same across all difficulty levels.
-Remove the ability to change difficulty modes mid-game.
-Do more things like the "zombies can break down doors in hard". THIS actually makes for difficulty- mob intelligence. Preferably, make zombies able to break down doors in normal.
-Add more mechanics that are changed via difficulty.
-Make normal harder than the current game, and hard truly difficult. Easy should be about as easy as it currently is (which is actually very easy).
-Give mobs a lot more abilities. Zombies that can turn villagers into zombies, make zombies not de-spawn in hard, allow spiders to hang upside down, etc. Then adjust whether these abilities work or not depending on game-mode.
These types of things are acceptable. Bloated mobs that can kill you easier are not.
3a: The mobs.
Similar to the above bit about difficulty, but it's a problem in of itself. Mobs are not hard. They're just a nuisance. The most difficult time I've had with mobs is when I have 2 creepers closing in on me with a skeleton nearby, and I'm stuck in an abandoned mineshaft. Even then, I got out of it almost unscathed.
The thing is, they could still be much better- but right now, they're nothing more than- again- a nusiance. They spawn a distance that's further than their sight range, and they despawn after a short enough distance, too. Also, all of them are insanely easy to escape. The hardest mob to escape is Endermen, and even then all you need to do is go into a proper shelter and you're fine. Or just... hit them until they die, like all the other mobs. All the rest are insanely easy to escape, and even coming face-to-face with them is easy.
The only time they can kill you is if you're in an insanely inconvenient place (above lava, etc), and by some cosmic chance the worst possible thing happens. Even then, it's due to YOU messing up- not the mobs being difficult. For a gamemode that's supposed to be about survival- for a gamemode that the community pegs as "OMG SO SCARY AND DIFFICULT"- it's really not that hard. At all.
Also, mobs always spawning anywhere during the night is- again- not hard. It's just annoying, and kills the ambiance and feel of the game outright. Anyone who says "omg but if they didn't spawn during the night it'd be 2 EASY" is an idiot. It's forced difficulty. Imagine if, during Half Life, headcrabs were just everywhere. And they kept spawning. All the time. But all you needed to do to keep them away was continually swing your crowbar. That's not difficulty, it's annoying.
Now, the Nether I will admit is pretty well done- it's got tension. Zombie pigmen don't attack you unless you attack them, which adds a layer of tension just right there ("oh god ffff don't hit them don't hit them"). Ghasts are a threat, but not an annoying one. The ability to bounce back their fireballs makes them feel like- *gasp*- a video game challenge. Instead of a mindless set of blocks to walk into your sword solely to annoy you. Blazes and Magma cubes are "eh", but they're not bad, either. They add a little bit to the ambiance of the Nether, and that it's not all safe. So, kudos to Mojang for that.
I'd also like to say that there really isn't much mob variety- sure, each mob should have a purpose (rather than just being there because they can be), but there are tons of uses you can find for new mobs. There's only 5 regular mobs in the overworld (Creeper, Spider, Zombie, Skeleton, Enderman). The rest are either variations of existing mobs, a (terrible) boss, in the nether, or very rarely spawned to the point that they're not considered a threat anyway (silverfish and slimes).
3b: How to fix it.
-Give mobs a longer sight range. WAY longer. If I can see them, they should be able to see me. Like, 128 blocks long. Automatically, they become more of a threat with this- besides, it's just a stupid generic MMORPG thing where mobs only see you within X distance. KILLS the idea of them being threatening.
-Make zombies- at the very least- faster. They're such a joke right now. And I don't mean on "hard" difficulty, I mean for ALL difficulty modes. They should be as fast as the player.
-Make creepers only spawn underground. Having them spawn aboveground is just... it kills tension, and ruins the image they have of "scary" even more. They're only remotely threatening underground- keep them this way.
-Make it so mobs only spawn in a light level of 4 or less, rather than 8 or less. This makes it so they only spawn in dense areas of forests, jungles, or underground. I've personally played around with this myself, and holy crap it feels great.
-Make spiders able to crawl upside down, and also make them actually change their image when they're doing this (as well as crawling upside down). Seriously, they look upright when crawling up walls... that's just silly, and lazy.
-Put in those planned mob prefixes- as in, mobs that randomly spawn with special effects/abilities. Things like being faster, able to light the player on fire, able to jump higher, able to be 3x as big, able to bounce projectiles back at the player, etc... there's tons of ideas for this. They shouldn't spawn ALL the time, but maybe a 1-in-10 chance to have a prefix (where the prefix itself is random). In of itself, this makes the world more dynamic.
-Make more biome-specific mobs. As in, enemy mobs- not more pets. They should have a use, but then it's not like zombies have any real use. I'd suggest that new mobs be able to drop items used for new potions, or something. This'd make biomes waaay nicer to go to, and is in line with the next section.
-Make slimes spawn above-ground, holy crap. They're important mobs, but tediously searching for them underground is INSANELY ANNOYING. I'd suggest making them spawn in swamps- the "only spawns in certain chunks" thing is alright, but still. They should spawn aboveground.
-Make new mobs drop items useful for the general game- again, ingredients for unique potions is a fantastic idea. Or just... other things that are truly unique (instead of more variations of the same crap).
In general, there's just so many things you can do with mobs to make them feel better within the flow of the game. But adding just those things alone would make mobs way more interesting, threatening, and actually add to the world rather than simply being there. And that's what they need to be- not just a mindlessly spawned thing here and there that you sorta gotta pay attention to and then LOL SSS CREEPER BOOM (: because no that's not scary. It's annoying.
4a: The biomes and terrain in general.
The terrain in MC is... heavily lacking. It used to be alright, then it was cool, then it was crazy, and now it's just boring. The main reason for this is that all biomes feel the same, just with a different mustache. Deserts are just plains with sand and cactus. Taigas are just forests with snow. Sure, they look different, but outside of a few minor "features", biomes all feel the same. The only ones that really feel different are ocean and jungle. Even then, they don't offer anything different- there's no real reason to go to them (aside from maybe "lol cats! (:" in jungles).
Now, I'm not one of those who is all "WAHH GO BACK TO ALPHA GENERATION". I'm ok with the current system- that's not the problem. The problem is that the current system is HEAVILY under-uitilized, and could be greatly improved. The idea of technical biomes that use all the same things as another biome (IE: desert hills, etc) is pretty good, but again, is under-uitilized.
There's also the fact that generation is capped to 127 still, despite there being an increased world height. The official explanation? "We wanted to give players breathing room". Holy crap, are you serious? You're going to do something we've been asking for over the past several years, then not use it? AGHDSGHSD.
And of course, there's no point to different biomes. Sure, in the upcoming update, deserts and jungles will have temples- neat. But they don't offer anything ultra special- they just make diamonds easier to get. Uugh... you might as well let players get diamonds just by combining dirt. Besides, why go to a jungle then when I can go to a desert? Or vice-versa. This crap alone makes me really feel that Mojang doesn't get what it means to make a good game, and instead are content with pandering to idiots who lap up anything they give them.
4b: How to fix it.
-Have more unique, biome-only rewards. Things like ingredients for new potions- USEFUL new potions. Hell, lilypads could be used for a "Potion of Water Walking". Things like this make biomes useful to travel to.
-As per above, more biome-specific mobs. Not "SssSand creeper (:", or mummies that are zombies with a different skin, or something equally dumb. I mean a mob that's really different from the other ones still, and give unique item drops. Snakes that are the size of silverfish, but can poison you, and only attack you if you get pretty close to them. Sharks that only spawn in ocean biomes, and drop shark fins used for... some water-based potion. Things like this. I could go on for hours, but I'd rather make a mod to show how it can be done.
-Make trees taller. Seriously, they look like crap. I've already doubled the height of oaks and birch, and they look great (like they always should have looked). Pine/spruce look alright, though.
-Make use of the extra space you now have. This just infuriates me. First off, make the earth deeper- make it ~90 blocks instead of 63. This means, yes, making everything generate higher to match this, but this is fine. Then, make mountains (extreme hills) generate higher than just 64 blocks from the sea level (127 - 63 = 64). With the average sea level of 90, the average mountain should go up to ~200 (110 rather than 64 blocks from sea level). This still gives 56 blocks for players to build on top of the mountains. This is plenty to build a multi-level mansion with roof space. From the peak.
-Make a proper pre-requisite system to biome generation- right now, it's pretty much entirely random where biomes spawn, so you have taigas next to deserts, etc. They should use a flowchart of sorts- getting which biome is there, then deciding which biome(s) to generate around it depending on whether or not it would be appropriate to place it there. This wouldn't be too hard to implement, and would make things look a lot better. This also relies upon more biomes being put in (for more "transitional" biomes, like savanna between plains and desert), but that's kind've a given.
-As mentioned above, more biomes. Not just for the sake of having them, of course- but by now, that should also be a given. Things like Savanna's, Bogs, Marshlands, Hills (Just hills, not extreme hills... which should be renamed to mountains, anyway), Badlands, and plenty more. All of which have some use, and all of which should look different.
-Variations of existing biomes. Things like spruce forests (not just in taiga's anymore), rocky mountains (all stone instead of grass/dirt), forest mountain (think eastern United States) and so on would be nice. Variations of stone types would help, as well- brown, dark grey, etc. Similar to the variations in wood.
-Make plains more flat. Right now, they're basically hills, and that's a little silly. Make a hills biome, splitting it from the plains biome.
-Deserts shouldn't have pools of water in them. This is just stupid. Players should have to use desert wells for water here.
-Make dirt/grass slabs (again), then use it for generating hills. It's silly that I have to jump up just to go over a hill. Just have the slabs generate every other block on hills, or something, and it'd work fine.
In general, the terrain should always feel enjoyable to be around. It also shouldn't feel so... "squished" as it does. Playing vanilla a lot, and I always feel like I'm tightly squished into certain areas. I just don't get this feeling of "endless landscape".
5a: Lack of equipment choice.
I really hate this. There hasn't been a real new weapon since swords. That's... I just don't even have a word for this. Disappointed? Something like this. The last update to combat was Beta 1.8. That's... unbelievable. In the course of this game, only one weapon? COME ON.
Yes, I know- pistons, dispensers, blah blah. Those are mechanical things, not direct weapons. I'm talking spears, axes, maces, flails- anything. There's so many ideas, so many ways to go about it- but nope. Just... nothing. Just swords. UUGH.
There isn't even an excuse for this. It wouldn't make things "too complicated". ALL it does is give the player more of a choice of weaponry. And choice is good. Not "this is harder 2 get than sord, but its STRONGAR" choice, I mean actually balanced choice.
This can all be applied to equipment, too- there's just... the armor. Why use leather when I can use iron? Or why use iron when I can use diamond? They should come in different weight values, where heavier armor gives more defense, but reduces your abilities the more of it you have (more on this later on).
And of course, the materials- why use leather or wood? Or hell, why use stone? There's absolutely no point to, since after a very short period of time, iron becomes so readily available. Diamond is understandable to not want to use, but it's still better than iron in every single way.
There's also no more stats than just... damage. Sure, enchantments blahblah... but no, I mean actual stats for weapons. Not "str, dex, int" kind of stats. SENSIBLE things- knockback, attack speed, etc. Hell, those two alone would be enough for good variation in weapons. You could have a weapon with high knockback, but low damage and speed. Or one with high speed, but low knockback and damage. SO MANY OPTIONS. YET NONE OF THEM EXPLORED.
And I think this is what it comes down to, when people rant about MC- there's so many things that could be done. SO. MANY. So many GOOD THINGS. Yet they choose to add... cats. And... cocoa plants. And... more decorative blocks.
Don't get me wrong, those are ok things. It's that they choose them over much better things. And it's been like this for several years now. This is infuriating, knowing they COULD add things that would objectively add more to gameplay, but they don't. And at this point, it feels like they won't.
Or no, that's not entirely accurate- it feels like when they do add things they should, they do a half-assed job, take months to add it in, then call it a day and never re-visit it. If they added new equipment, they'd add one new weapon, and it'd be the same as a sword but have a different secondary. Or, it'd be harder to get than swords, and better in every way. And that'd be it. That's all we'd get.
****.
5b: How to fix it.
-Add in "Knockback" as a weapon stat. At the same time, add "knockback resistance" to armor, with heavier armor having more knockback resistance. Mobs should also have varying levels of knockback resistance- skeletons could be easy to knock back, but zombies would be harder. Generally speaking, it should be harder to knock things back than it is right now.
-Add an attack speed stat for weapons. The fastest should be the default attack speed (which is 3 per second IIRC). Pretty straightforward-
-Make new weapons. Battle axes, maces, spears, crossbows- all of that, and preferably more. Give them unique levels of of those 3 stats (Damage, knockback, and attack speed). Then, give them unique secondary abilities (right click)- spears can be thrown, maces can stun, and so on. Maybe even make different weapons have another ability- spears could hit 1 block farther than regular weapons, etc. Tons of ideas, and as long as they're balanced, they'd be fantastic.
-Increase default sprint speed. Then, divide armor into different "armor classes", or assign them different "weight" levels. The better the armor, the heavier it is- heavy armor would make you sprint slower, and after a certain point, you'd be unable to sprint with really heavy armor. It should also disable certain other abilities (again, more on this later) after certain points. This would make going without armor fairly viable- just the same, going in full armor would mean you'd not be knocked back nearly as easily (and plus still be a juggernaut).
-Add more material types. Not just "dragon ore! better than diamond, but is really hard to get (:", because mods that do this are stupid as hell. I mean things within the bounds of iron or diamond- with unique uses. A "fire" ore that makes your weapons able to set things on fire with a set chance. Or tools that allows you to cook ores/etc you mine with a certain chance. And the armor can reduce fire damage, and with the full set can make you immune to it. But it'd be slightly worse than iron- better than stone/leather, but still a bit worse than iron. And that's just one new material type- there's so many more ideas. GOOD ideas, not just ideas that add more to "hurr tier 6 elite ultra dragon equipment!1".
Right now, equipment isn't even really a thing- you just have sword, bow, and armor. Diamond is the best for all of those. Hurrrr HAV FUN. No, there needs to be variation. Both in the weapon types, and in material.
6a: Lack of player abilities
You can jump. Yay! You can "sneak". Yay! You can sprint. Yay!
And that's it.
SIGH
6b: How to fix it.
Add Smart Moving. This is all this needs. Literally, that's it. Smart moving is great on so many levels. The armor thing I mentioned earlier- about how heavier armor could disable certain abilities- would be applied here. IE: Wearing heavy armor wouldn't let you "charge jump".
Also, sprinting shouldn't require double tapping, because that's stupid. Smart moving adds a sprint key anyway, so... yeah. It should be, by default:
WASD: Movement.Shift: Sprint.Ctrl: Sneak.E: Grab.Q: Inventory.Z: Drop item.
I've been using this layout, and it's basically perfect. It just feels great. I don't care if people need to re-adjust to it- the types of people who would complain about new controls aren't the types of people you should listen to anyway. Speaking of...
7a: The community is terrible.
Anyone who has the slightest amount of intelligence would realize that the MC community is absolute rubbish. They complain any time something new is added, yet at the same time, are ok with anything Mojang adds. You get an outcry of mindless complaints, and an outcry of mindless support against said complaints. There's little to no intelligence to be found here. No real discussion, just "YA I LIKE THAT" "NO DATS STUPID". No objective discussion, little to no intelligence criticism of ideas. And it's depressing. It doesn't need to be this way- it can be stopped.
But it isn't. Instead, Mojang laps it up. ****ing minecraftchick got hired onto Mojang. They feed the utterly stupid crap they fell into, and continue to make money off of it. It feels like they would sooner make a Minecraft spinoff game where you play as a creeper, filled with stupid "now u ARE the creeper! SsSSSs (:" nonsense and idiotic fan pandering that makes them millions of dollars, than they would actually add any good content that might get complained about.
This is what angers people the most. Redditors, "bronies", and so on are more listened to than any form of objective criticism. Complete cesspools are more of a priority to consider than anyone with the slightest amount of intelligence.
Why? Because they're not hard to deal with. Mojang can make "super TNT" that is just a bigger TNT explosion, and people would lap it up. Oh sure, some people would complain, but they wouldn't have to deal with people railing on them for making bad decisions. Because it's what people want. It's the kind of mindless crap you expect a 12 year old to suggest, and then it gets put in. It's why we have wolves, cats, "the end", and so on. Pretty much all of the terrible choices of gameplay- and lack of initiative to fix anything- can be traced back to Mojang's consistent fan-pandering. Because the people they pander to let them be lazy as hell. They're the kinds of people who gladly pay hundreds of dollars to go to an ill-planned out "convention" all about an unfinished game.
They're the kinds of people who, when they add something that's remotely challenging, complain about it ENDLESSLY until it's made easier, yet somehow are ok with artificially difficult ******** like the "Ender Dragon". Or when anything is added that goes contrary to what they're used to, they whine and cry and throw a temper tantrum. And not in the "This is absolute CRAP, and here is why..." way, in a well thought out forum post. No, they just WHINE. They don't ever give any GOOD reasons, they just whine, cry, and complain. Because they're used to Mojang never changing the things they're used to.
It's like a kid who's constantly given candy his whole life- and after 10 years, the parents realize he's an obese, unhealthy mess. Finally, the parents take away the candy, and then they IMMEDIATELY scream and cry. Endlessly. Until the parents give him back his candy.
AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT MOJANG DOES NOW. They give the fat kid their candy back. And it's utterly infuriating. They won't listen to the intellectual, well-thought out posts given by people who insult them for being so ****ing lazy, because it might hurt their feelings. No, they listen to to types of people who have goddamn ponies from a TV show directed at little girls, and people who use years old "memes" that have been beaten to death as their avatars with SOME mention of the ****ing creeper in their signature.
FFFFFFFFFFF****.
7b: How to fix it.
STOP. JUST STOP. Stop the pandering. Start changing things that need to be changed. Steve looks like ****. There, I said it. He's the ****ing TEST MODEL you used when the game first started! I DON'T CARE IF IT'S "ICONIC". I don't care if there are millions of youtube videos with steve's shitty looking head for the thumbnail. If you- the community, Mojang, Zeus, whoever the **** is reading this- ever want this game to change for the better, REALIZE THAT THIS KIND OF THING NEEDS TO CHANGE. If this keeps up, we will never be able to have Minecraft reach its potential.
Start being properly criticial of yourself- and start taking CRITICISM. Yes, from places like /v/- ESPECIALLY places like /v/. No, not the stupid posts- the ones that are well thought out and make ****ing sense. Stop pandering to the "MINECRAFT IS ABOUT BUILDING!!1" crowd, too- they have creative mode, for ****'s sake! STOP SHITTING UP SURVIVAL MODE BECAUSE OF THIS CROWD.
If it means you need to alienate the stupid people who would complain about things like removing the ability to swim up falling water, do so. ABSOLUTELY do so. They'll get over it, grow up, and realize how much better the game would be. Or they'll leave.
Yes, people might leave. OH ****ING NO. It's not like this game is subscription based anyway, you've already made your money. But it comes down to this- who do you want to play your game? A million stupid people who would prefer instant gratification and have NO sense of what makes a proper game and would stop playing once they grow up, or 250,000 people who genuinely enjoy a good video game? And it's not a matter of "making a lot of money vs making no money", because Minecraft is already making MILLIONS just by EXISTING. You don't need to "market" anymore or anything- people will keep buying it.
If anything, at this rate, it will turn into World of Warcraft- where the continuous pandering will alienate your core userbase, and replace it with 12 year olds who have no ****ing sense of what's good. While it'll EXPLODE for a few years, it won't have NEAR the staying power it will- and eventually, something better will come out to dethrone it. Because there CAN be something better. BECAUSE YOU NEVER LET THE GAME REACH ITS FULL POTENTIAL.
And if you think "lol, mojang wont read this... you're wasting your time", the sad thing is, you're right. They WON'T. They won't listen to why their precious CREEPER SSSSsSSS DIAMONDS STEVE (: isn't liked by the rest of the gaming community. They'll only listen to mindless compliments and kudos by people who have no idea what they're talking about.
I can go on for hours- HOURS- on what they could add. I've already given plenty of suggestions- suggestions that many intelligent people agree with on some degree or another. The thing is, I don't need to. If this last bit- about not pandering to idiots- were to be considered and executed, everything else would fall into place. But at this point, I realize it's futile. The ideas won't get spread around. Even if my mod that I'm working on gets to be insanely successful, it won't be implemented. If it did, it'd get stripped of any and all good content, and put in as a zombified, watered-down, buggy mess. Because they would rather listen to ****ING REDDIT than any REMOTELY well thought-out idea that would upset 12 year old children with ADHD.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the core problem of what's wrong with Minecraft.

AFTER-NOTES:
Some FAT's (Frequently Answered Things). If you want more detailed responses, read through the thread instead of being an ignorant shithead.
"Use mods."
This rant/discussion is not about mods. This is about the vanilla game. More specifically, the vanilla survival mode, and how it could be better. If you want a more detailed answer, read through the thread.
"Minecraft is not an RPG."
The changes I'm proposing are not intended to turn it into an RPG in the slightest. If anything, they would turn it from a boring, tedious, grindy game (a signature of RPG's) into a unique, dynamic, and enjoyable game.
"Players should be given the choice to play the game exactly as they want to."
If you don't want to die, go play creative mode. If you want to build, go to creative mode. The option to "play as you want to" is there- why have a magical button that can make the game easier for you with a simple click? It's not necessary.
"The game is about building, not fighting."
Creative mode is for building. Just because survival mode lacks content doesn't mean it's "not about fighting". That just means it lacks content.
"The game is fine."
It isn't. If it were "fine", they wouldn't still be adding updates and fixing things. Even if it WERE fine, why can't it be better?
"Your changes are crap. They wouldn't make the game better."
Suggest better ones then! I highly encourage this. -

Shreaders posted a message on Terrain Seeds Are Useless! And Here's Why (Poll Added)Posted in: SuggestionsSeeds Are Useless and Here's Why(For those of you who do not want to read the whole thing - Read the spoiler below for the main points of the thread.)WHAT WE WANT:
1. More interesting terrain; More breathtaking and jaw dropping land masses to appear more often then they currently do
2. We want extreme mountains and overhangs to have the possibility to neatly generate randomly in all biomes. We want neat, uniform, and NICE land masses to appear RANDOMLY in all biomes equally. (obviously excluding plains and swamps as well, of course)
3. The majority of cave systems and Mineshafts actually come to an end eventually, and appear less often. Seemingly endless caves should be a nice find.
WHAT WE DO NOT WANT:
4. We do not want chewed up and spit out eyesore terrain spammed all over the place - we want it to appear randomly and spaced apart to please players who like the wild terrain generations and the ones who like the flat lands for building.
5. We do not want the Terrain Generator from 1.7
WHEN WE WANT IT:
As soon as Mojang can get around to it!

!!Important Update!!I want to remind everyone - this thread is not asking for the 1.7 map generator back! That is the last thing we want! Honestly who wants floating islands of gravel and random jagged dirt and sand hills in the middle of a snowy plain? We're not nostaglics on a trip or a bunch of randoms missing the old map generation - we are simply supporting one cause: To add height variation to all biomes in the current terrain generator and to have caves sytems actually come to an end eventually, and appear less often (as well as mineshafts)
And as it remains a sad fact that Minecrafts current terrain generation focuses on nothing but realisim - there is no excitement. Everything is flat, and thus renders seeds useless. I'd also like to note that we are not idiots; we are aware that you can run into some interesting land masses with the current generation but it's a lot rarer then it was pre 1.8 - we simply want more breathtaking and jaw dropping land masses to appear more often then they currently do! We want them to appear in all biomes, and not limited to only extreme hills and jungle biomes. We want amazing overhangs, cliffs, mountains and the like to appear in all biomes and we want things to be less predictable and repetitive. So please, have a little respect as we would respect your opinion if you feel differently then us. Do not accuse us of being nostaligic or for wanting a complete overhaul of the 1.7 terrain generator back itself as this would just silly (Instead we would like certain aspects and features of this terrain gen to be implemented into the current terrain gen!)
I know what you're probably thinking: What the hell is this kid on about? And I don't blame you for thinking that, but bear with me for a moment and hear me out. Be open minded and not so quick to flame/troll
Think of a Minecraft where you share seeds, not for finding cool villages, or for never ending ravines, or the overabundance of abandoned mineshafts (which are more common then one may think), but for finding marvelous mountain ranges, breath-taking oceans of hills and beautful springs and waterfalls, gigantic overhangs over looking fields of flowers, and floating islands surrounding a valley of jungles. This may all seem drastic: but very possible.
Before for the 1.8 update of Minecraft - the terrain generation was wild, unpredictable, and exciting to explore. Ever since 1.8, the amazing and breathtaking land features have just vanished altogether. You do not have to take my word for it as this is a very wide and fast growing issue amongst all Minecraft players and the issue is gaining support quickly.
More to the point, seeds are now useless because ever since the 1.8 update - Minecraft maps are all exaclty the same! There's no diversity, no variety in land formations; it's all similar. What is the point in sharing seeds when every seed is basically the same map?! Again, I know this may seem over exaggerated, but just compare these two videos to one another - and then try to tell me there's not a difference?
Now take a look at this video of the top 8 seeds of 1.2.4 and 1.2.5 and tell me how the terrain on these two even compare to pre 1.8? Sure the jungles, ravines, villages, mineshafts are neat an all, but I remember when seeds were shared not because "I spawned next to an NPC village" but because "I spawned on top of a 200 block tall mountain surrounded by small islands of gravel". Seeds were shared for landscape rather then structure generation.
You will even notice a clip in this video titled "This seed has weird looking mountains and a jungle" and just look at those mountains compared to some of the ones in the first video, and then try to tell me the seeds haven't changed?
Sure there are some interesting land formations in this one, (well in seeds 1 and 2 at least) but look at the rest of the surrounding land. How's it look? Flat? Plain? ordinary? Dull? .. Yup!
Why can't we have pre 1.8 map generation style implemented into modern Minecraft. Why can't we have a more diverse, wild, and unpredictable land generation in Minecraft?
So I challenge you, Minecrafters, to prove me wrong. Show me images videos of some wild, diverse, and unpredictable land masses in Minecraft. Show me that I am wrong. I challenge you to prove to me that the Minecraft terrain generation has changed for the better. You may say "It's more realistic" but how often do you find yourself exploring "realistic landscapes"? There's no fun in it anymore when the best you have to find lies in that one seed on that one video on youtube.
Do you find yourself often getting bored and actually wanting to go mining? How often before 1.8 did you ever want to go mining? My money's on almost never, am I correct? With the new terrain, sure you may be able to build a simple house, but you will never have the opprotunity to watch the sunset on a massive cliff over hanging a giant ocean with small islands surrounding you again. Unless you stand up and do something.
Every voice makes a difference and if we all speak loud enough eventually Mojang will hear. If all of Minecraft would stand up and say "We want a diverse terrain generation" Mojang will hear. Don't be afraid to speak your mind, everone may call you a nostalgic, they may tell you it hasn't changed, but anyone who was around before 1.8 could tell you easily that the maps just aren't the same anymore. If you disagree, think about it again, If you still disagree, think about it one more time. You are not nostalgic, you just want a newer, diverse and wild terrain. You want variety in your biomes, and that's nothing to be ashamed of!
This is something I am very passionate about as exploring used to be my number one thing I loved to do in Minecraft until 1.8. Until recently, I thought I was the only one who thought the terrain was dull and repetitive. That was until I found a movement on the MCF of players who are in the same boat as I. I am not alone in this, and neither are any of you. Together, if we all speak up, we can make a difference. We can give seeds a reason to be sought out. We can give players exciting and fun places to visit not just "Hey, you can spawn on top of an NPC village" that gives you a whole 5 seconds of "oh, cool" then what? More mining?
For those picky and irritable minecrafters : This thread isn't asking for a total dramatic change and complete re-installation of pre-1.7 terrain gen.. just at least some tweaks to make the current terrain generation wild and diverse.. at least a few random mountains and amazing land structures to come across.. not a COMPLETE change, just some minor tweaks is all we ask.
EDIT:Let's not forget the over abundance of ocean. On a map I was exploring today I literally flew 50,000 blocks over nothing but pure ocean. God strike me dead if I am lying. It is ridiculous the amount of ocean in the map generation these days. We don't want realistic oceans, just like we don't want realistic flat land. Fix this, Mojang, please!
---------- Our Supporters ----------Support Count: 500+ (Moved to poll)1.8 has turned almost every cave into a massive and endless underground swiss-cheese complex. Yes, they are really awesome to explore, but I miss exploring FOR caves. Now it's like once you find a cave, you're set for life. It's like the terrain was focused on forcefully expanding the underground world.Quote from ChaosGuardian
Seeds are now also useless in determining cave sizes. In 1.7 and before, we'd get small, medium, large, and seemingly endless caves. Now we're forced to explore caves in only one size -- seemingly endless.
Every small hole you find turns into 2 caves, which turns into 4 caves, and then there's entrances off in every direction and it gets damn annoying.

i agree with this, the land is boring...
ever since biomes appeared minecraft got worse
now i have to keep spawning worlds to get a decent place to build, and then usually its still boring
there isnt a reason to explore the world and the mountains are nothing
(i also liked when pumpkins were more of a trophy and limited and what u use them for now is stupid)

Honestly... I saw this thread and couldn't believe it! I love the new biomes! They are pretty cool though not much to explore but I'm ok with that. Then I opened that Remember Before 1.8 Seeds... Honestly I almost cried! I remember all those great seeds and they put the new ones to shame...*sheds tear of sadness* I'm a believer! Praise the lord!
By the way, don't forget to repost this please! More people need to see this! You have gone into depth what the problem is and how to fix it!

I totally agree with this. Here, however, is some elaboration as to WHY all the seeds are the same:
In 1.8 and later, the seed generates the BIOMES first, and then uses a chunk of code to determine terrain for that specific biome. Since the code is the same every time it generates it, it results in every biome, and therefore every seed, looking almost exactly the same.
Here is how it should work:
The seed should generate the terrain first. Totally regardless of biome. Then, there should be a chunk of code that looks at the terrain and generates biomes according to terrain - as opposed to terrain according to biome. After all, there are only so many biomes, but the terrain combinations are endless.
Further elaboration for techies:
The seed should generate terrain and caves. Random height variation with only a very small amount of predetermined things, e.g. large height variation and some flatter spots. Also, for large areas below sea level, generate flat spots around that area.
Then, when biomes are chosen, it goes something like this:- Extreme hills and mountain biome is chosen when there are very large terrain height fluctuation above sea level.
- When large flat spots are found, generate either a plains biome or desert biome. In the case that it generates a desert biome, replace dirt with sand and the first layers of stone with sandstone.
- If large areas below sea level are found, ocean biomes are made and the area around it is turned into either sand, gravel, or stone (new beach).
- For slightly hilly areas, either leave it be (generate lots of flowers) or generate trees on it for a forest biome.
- Etc...
- Then, after that, generate mushroom islands, villages, dungeons, pyramids, and ravines.
Ok, that was off the top of my head.

i agree with this cause 100% before 1.8 i played minecraft heaps but now i hardly ever play it, the terrain just seems so boring and realistic. i thought minecraft was a fantasy game but theres no fantasy in current terrain. i play games to get away from my boring repetative life not to be reminded of it. also under the supports there should be a list of all the supporters IMHO

1:one reason I don't like the new generator is because of th caves. It's like mojang built minecraft assuming you'd spend 95% of ur time under ground! 2:why I hate the new seeds is u can spend an hour typing in numbers, and have no Luck on a place yo build ur house. And once I did just that.3:I've been hiking a lot, and and I've seen from deserts in Arizona to waterfalls in California. There was a lot of verity. Theres none of that in the new genrator4: intoo, nearly cried when compared the two seed videos!

I cannot agree more. I loved the generation of wild landscape in previous versions. You even got me totally at the "wanting to go mining" part. I used to enjoy walking around and risk having to build emergency shelters at nightfall just to try to see as much landscape in a world as I could, and now I can even expand bases outward at 5 blocks per day until I have a small village and feel no urge to go any further out. Everything since the Adventure Update has made the game much more complicated and interesting, but I believe other aspects of the game are to be preserved as well.
So yes, add me to the supporter list if you will please.
Quote from Diblie
For some time now my friends have been giving up minecraft saying "It's not the same anymore, we've run out of things to do." and i believe this is a very pivotal reason. The lack of changing terrain has lead to monotonous builds and has given minecraft what i had for so long believed was impossible: A norm. With terrain generation remaining the same on nearly every map, it gives a rather 'stale' quality to a game which is supposed to be completely open ended with infinite possibilities, both with what you do and with what the world gives you. The same set of biomes can only be played differently so many times and although the "realistic" terrain generation was wonderful around the time it was new (1.8+), it's proven to be cumbersome rather than enjoyable. Before 1.8, terrain was ALWAYS different and unexpected, finding a cool mountain wasn't a regular thing, so it was nice to be able to build a huge fort into it. Now, extreme hills biomes are nearly uniform and offer no interesting or exciting features with which to entice the player other than height.
I hope this gains ground and this is the only movement i've agreed with enough to read through, nonetheless post in.

This thread is a total win. It could not be more true and elaborate. Our old terrain generation brought wonder before our eyes. We scavenged all we could and took every cave we could find. Now we are overloaded with caves, mineshafts, and ravines. It's terrible.
Minecraft used to be place full of life. Full of adventure. You could live under an overhang like a troll or carve yourself into one of the many floating islands for the best view. You could make a minecart roller coaster head through an entire canyon and over the skies. The generation made many shapes from arches to tops. It just isn't like that anymore. Now we have boring flat planes and boring endless oceans. You can't live in the dream land anymore. It's all too realistic now, with plain old hills and stupid little mountains and ravines. Since when is minecraft realistic? We have creepers and magical dust. Minecraft is not realistic. Let it not be."
Quote from Vechs
Could also fix this issue by introducing new biomes.
Extreme Mountains
Extreme Mountain Jungle
Extreme Mountain Tundra
Terramorphic (This one would have extreme overhangs)

For those of you having a hard time understanding what I mean when I say height variation - maybe my friend Chaos can help you to better understand:Quote from ChaosGuardian
People often imply that if the height variation we're talking about would return, there'd be no room to build. Despite it being fairly easy to build on the previous generator, and that you were sometimes forced to terraform (a challenge in the game that's not present anymore) giving you resources while you made land suitable for building, the mass amounts of flat land found in 1.8 would NOT disappear.
Variation means that the terrain has the chance to be A, B, C, X, Y, Z, etc. When we say height variation, we do not mean "spam every region with mountains." However, if height variation does return, having an area or multiple areas within a seed or multiple seeds that is spammed with mountains will be extremely possible, but so will be the chance of finding mass amounts of flat land, or hilly land (or mixed!) under the same circumstances. I don't see why some people are disagreeing with this. It will NOT REMOVE flat land, but it will give every area in every seed the chance to be something unique.
Why not just use mods? Why do we not use mods?
Mods are a temporary fix to a long-term problem.
