posted a message on I have some questions about this laptop.
Hey im getting a dell xps 17 for super cheep and i wanted to know some stuff about it that reading specs cant really tell me.

    First off heres the specs:
2nd Gen intel core i7 2670QM Clocked at 2.0 with turbo up to 3.1
    8gb DDR3 ram (2Dimm)
    17.3 inch 1920X1080 HD screen
nVidia Geforce Gt 550M with 1gb of vram with optimus
    dual 500gb 7200rpm HHDs
JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3 (for sound)

anyway can some people tell me:
1)How does that graphics card hold up to intensive games? (Say shogun 2 or BF3 for example)
2)What is the ventilation like on this? Will i experience some really hot temperatures?
3)Would this machine be capable of a screen recorder say fraps recording a minecraft video? At what setting would i get nice playable FPS?
4)Is the fan loud or distracting?
5)How is customer support with dell?
6)Hows the sound? Does it sound like an average laptop, a bit better?

I have already searched the web for answers for these but i didnt get any good answers. I have never had a nVidia card so i was curious how this performs? Anyone with this laptop or who has worked with it i would love some feedback.

Mainly because to get a laptop with the same performance as a good gaming desktop you will have to pay much much more and the cooling will be worse. I don't like laptops myself because i am poor and don't really need to game on the go but if that's what you are into and have the money go for it

well actually with the paticular laptop i chose as an example it has some of the best cooling for any laptop built for gaming
    Quote from lefty867

Price is relevant. If someone has 2k to thrown down, they can probably find a gaming laptop, but the majority of the people on here have a budget of under 1k. For under 1k, you get much better bang for your buck if you make your own desktop, rather than buying a laptop. That's why.

well ik, im on a huge budget less then $1000, but like for people who have the money to buy one of them it is irrelevant, if they want a laptop we should suggest laptops not desktops

There is nothing wrong with laptops they are just more expensive than desktops and the cooling can be much worse. If you have the cash i would say go for it but you could get a desktop that is almost 4 times better than that for the same price.

no im not getting that one i have another laptop im getting, but ive seen alot of people in this section persuading people to buy desktops instead of laptops and i was just wondering why? besides the fact that a desktop will offer more peroformance for less $

posted a message on Why does everyone try to steer people away from gaming laptops?
Ive just been wondering why alot of people on this forum try to steer others away from gaming laptops. Many people have been saying dont buy a gaming laptop they suck, or there unreliable, or laptops were never built for gaming.... ect. But i kind of disagree with that, i would say alot of laptops are built just for gaming: an example being the ASUS G74SX. The asus could beat many medium grade gaming desktops. Heres the laptop: http://www.pro-star.com/index.cfm?mainpage=productdetail&model=G74SX-DH72

Im looking at this laptop simply from a specs point of view, if people have the money the price is irrelevant. And some of you might say well people could just buy a stronger gaming desktop for less, and your probably right but some people want to have portability. they want to be able to take there laptop over to there friends house and play.

Anyway what do u guys think?

    That is enough? :laugh.gif:

That sounds great! im actualy getting a new laptop soon. im bidding on ebay on it so if i win i hope to have in 3-5 days. ANyway when i get it im gonna finish the land generation of the sequel (As u might now its islands. I have already finshed constructing the islands now i need to place them in an ocean, any suggestions on doing that?) But yeh once I finish that you can come help us out with redstone traps, parkor, ect. We plan to make the sequel amazing. We build it on a server (Sadly hamanchi becuz im unable to port foward) but yeh when you ready i can send you the server info and maybe you can get started! that sound all good to u?
    Quote from Maxargan

Ok i think i finished most parts of the map, and i think i could make a review right about... Now:

The Map present a fair difficult, its headed towards Minecraft players with more experience of survival, The map itself have a lot of content, but because the gameplay area is so small it gives the feeling that the player has no place to go, i would suggest more content in the surface. The map has a good balance of hard difficult and fairness, but just the start, the treasures of, for example: The Maze, are really un-balanced, giving the player way too many weapons, making the map easy to that point.

The Loneliness is really demonstrated in the map, the hopeless fear of a wasted land is accomplished to say the least.

The characters.. well i could say there is none, but there is a couple of signs, who invite you to dangers for the reward of treasure, this "Character" is a total *******, died more that one time because of him, and it really makes the player ragequit sometimes. The tries to put humor in this map are really bad accomplished, as well for making the player just really dislike whatever sign he cross his way.

The story is simple and at the same time very dark, good for a survival map, who doesn't really need a much of a complex story, though i would like to see more of it.

Conclusion: At First the map is a really great, challenging map who all of us need to try, and has a really good amount of difficult, but sometimes during the adventure there is flaws like over powered weapons or down right annoying characters, that would make the player hate the map. At the end: A Great map that everyone should try out

    - 6/10 -

Map Rate: This is better than skyblock, but is lower than the Vechs super hostile series

oh and thx for review! i love input like this!

Ok, i downloaded Eternal Night, i survived and lighted the place around me (dying 3 times in the process) and made a little house for protection, and i discovered the little nether cave with a pig spawner in it (No idea if this is intentional or it is a error)

I will make a review when i am done with all the challenges, but my first impressions are (Dont put this on the review, is just a first impression)

The map is brutally difficult, but not unfair, and it makes the player feel "Guilty" of every death, is a nice ambient of loneliness in a wasted land, and i personally feel a especial attach to this map, there is small rewards frequently making the player dont feel helpless during the journey.

I still have many challenges to accomplish, but that is what i think in this moment about the map.

I see you are making sequel to the map, can i help?, i mean you could give me the map and i could work in a part of it, if you dont think i am qualified to make adventure maps, click in my banner down below so you can see my map in progress, i will be really happy if i could work with you.

so hows your review going? and i could see about you helping us: what skills could you bring to the map?

    Creator(s): Warhawk193
    Map Name: Hold the House
Genre: Survival/Adventure (The map involves not only surviving but exploring numerous areas which gives it the Survival/Adventure genre)
Mods/Texture Packs Needed: None, play on whatever your comfortable with
Link: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/902478-survadv-hold-the-house-boasting-8000-downloads-looking-for-reviews-v12-released-check-it-out/ or you can click my signature!
Estimated Completion Time: However long you wish to play, but to complete every challenge could take up to a day or two. (I wouldn't recommend every single one, just do as many as you can)
Anything Extra: From looking at some other reviews you posted Im very satisfied with the criteria you grade on but Story. Since it is a survival map. It lacks a central story, its more of a backround story to help the player understand the situation better, but the adventure portion gives an overall final goal (Which you can read on my topic if you decide to play it). So im asking for I guess a pardon or an easier grading on that portion. I saw that you hate mazes... It does contain one but as I said it completely optional, and as ive seen on youtube it isnt super hard to accomplish. Finally the map does come with two different Worlds: One is called No Cloud and other is called Eternal Night. As the titles will tell one has nothing blocking the sun while the other does. If you get around to the review I would perfer for you to review the Eternal Night version (I barley get any comments on it and it follows the story better) But if your not in the mood for a hard challenge then No Clouds the way to go. Anyway any questions feel free to PM me or reply whatever you choose. hope you get to it! :biggrin.gif:

Just curious, were we allowed to break the pistons? I "broke" into the meth lab and stole everything, including the Sticky Pistons. Is that okay?

Also, the Labryinth was hella fun....too many zombies poking around the corners. The end was totally worth it, even if it meant going back a second time lol.

    Thanks for replying!

yeah sure lol i dont care how you get into the meth lab :biggrin.gif: long as you found it and cooked up something in it, its challenge complete. Lol thx about labyrinth, i actually just removed a bunch of treasure in the new 1.2 version. Hope it balances it out. Thx for replying! :biggrin.gif:

Erm, don't it use multi-core already? I have minecraft open right now and my cores are being used ( all 4).

    So what does that mean?

Oh and minecraft needs a good graphics card too, its not only cpu, remember opengl?

nope minecraft is set to use only one thread so basically one core. the other cores being used are probably for os and other windows running. or have you installed Optifine?

I completely agree that Minecraft needs multi-thread support, but I also know that to be correctly done, it would require an almost complete rewrite of the game's main code and would introduce a vast number of bugs.

Perhaps a more specific possibility would be to split the game into 3 threads that would not need to interact synchronously too often:
    • Terrain Generator
    • Game Engine
    • OpenGL

It would be nice to also have an independent thread for pre-fetching/caching chunks and other resources, but that would require a great deal of synchornous operations with the other threads stated above.

Exactly what i was thinking. What i really wish for is that Minecraft will not make the processing task one giant thread but rather like you said 3 smaller threads that would greatly ease up the processing task.
