    I don't understand why people smart enough to break a game's copyright protect would bother even releasing it to hoi polloi of pirate downloaders who are barely smart enough to work out how to run a torrent client.
    Are they just showing off their hacking skills? Is that worth breaking the law and running the risk of a massive fine?

    Actually, why do you think hackers/hacker groups exist? They constantly see who has the better skills, by cracking the game's protected EXE, and making it bypass the DRM. If you don't know what hackers really are though, take a good look into it. The proper guys 'hack' to find faults in the systems, and in most cases, show off that they managed to break into the system in question, and do what they want it to do. With games, the hackers just see who can crack the game with better/more efficiency.

    However, some hackers are just after your computer... ya know, viruses, Remote Control, etc etc etc...

    Anyway, I've been up for some 20 odd hours! I'm going to sleep!

    I've actually read something interesting the other day.... One of the developers, who since speaking up a few days ago, has been fired from the company, from the studio working on the current True Crime Hong Kong title, has stated "We, the developers, have been forced, by the publisher to develop a game that does not follow our creative decisions. We wanted to make the main character in game a Female, someone resembling a sort of Lucie Lu character, that fit into the Hong Kong theme. Then the publisher came in and stated to us, that we could not do it, but instead had to make a generic male character, who's a thug that highjacks cars, and wields weapons. The publishers reasoning was, as the developer studio was told, 'GTA sold millions of copies, so we can too with the same idea' and 'Simply because there is no other game that has a Female lead character, that takes place in a sand-box styled gameplay' "
    Thanks alot Activision, once again proving that you are screwing the developers over, not only by spending so much time on DRM, but also hindering creativity. Bobby Kotic (sp on last name?) #1 for Game Industry Nazi, and general money laundering *****!

    I actually think what Notch should implement, is a 'demo' version of the game later.... maybe accessible only for a certain amount of time, while having full features. That way, people wont pirate it, and they can try before you buy, for maybe 30 mins or 60 mins

    Alot of games like, Reflexive arcade for example, use that sort of thing for their games. Might be worth looking into that

    The way I see it, 5 people to try the game is good.... 500+ is not, especially when it's shared around through a torrent and stuff.

    Before you go on the What The **** spree about the games, You should also note, ALOT of games today, tend to be generic FPS's or RTS's, that dont offer much replayability, and only a few hours of gameplay. In Australia, games cost 100$ for PC... and unless you wait a good year or so for them to drop down in price to what 4-8 hours of crappy generic gameplay, with new graphics, or rather, a new 'skin', to be worth.
    Same old, Point here, Click to build/fire. It's the same game all the freaking time.... Can't say how many games I've downloaded to try before buying, and erased an hour late because of how shitty they were. Big name companies try to **** over the user, look at Activision... their games DESERVE to be pirated... They constantly **** with the user, and make most of their games almost unplayable, and that's due to their overboard DRM. Its a pitty that a pirated game works better then the legit retail one

    I'm not saying notch should go overboard with the DRM, but if a single account is used to rapidly install and activate, on a bunch of computers, there should be either a warning, or a permanent lock/removal of that account.

    Well, the user in question seems to be Scruffy_Puppy... he's put the name for the login, and password, for it, on ALL of the torrents for the pirated Minecraft. Someone needs to bring this user to Notch's attention :tongue.gif:

    Shame on you Scruffy_Puppy, I hope your account gets locked :biggrin.gif:
    PS: Every torrent, on all the sites it's posted on, has that guy/gal's username for it

    I've just come across something shocking.... people are already starting to pirate minecraft alpha's, and the SMP server....

    This is really poor in my opinion, as Notch is doing a great job with this game, and he's doing it <mostly> single-handedly.

    I propose to add some sort of copy protection to this. I understand pirating games from the big name companies, as alot of them are "copy + paste" with no innovation, and paying 100$ for something that's 4 hours long, is not good.

    But anyway, Notch, I really suggest you get some sort of copy protection on your thing.. but thats my 2 cents

    This is so far from the truth it's hilarious.

    Welcome to the internet, People talk out of their asses :biggrin.gif: <no stab at anyone>

    Anyway, what I wanted to add is specs of my system:

    So it's Notch's mysterious code, that's trying to virus into our kernels :biggrin.gif:

    With Singleplayer I had that happen a couple of times as well... if you try to maximize the window/move the window, after it starts/right after generating a level, it will BSoD.

    However, if I say "load saved game" and then alt-tab and let it load, while minimized, then open it up a bit later, there are no problems with it

    I have a dedicated server running microsoft server 2003 that crashes when anyone wants to join. I'm thinking it has something to do with JRE64. I'm gonna try the 32 bit version and I'll get back to you if it helps.

    Sounds like a plan :smile.gif: I'll keep a watch on this

    Simple as the topic says.... I keep getting the IRQ_IS_LESS_THAN_etcetc error when someone other than me tries to join the server.

    I can log in personally, onto the server, and all the ports have been forwarded properly, however, when someone tries to join the server, instant BSoD.

    Quote from Darentei »
    Someone needs to research just how much space they can take and how close together they will grow.

    EASY: 5x5x7, is the smallest tree I've come across so far, so that is the minimum, I generally put 5x5 blocks (flat blocks) with 1 space inbetween them... in Open Air.
    It looks something like
    <T = Tree Space Block, G = Ground/Dirt block, with X = Tree Base Trunk/Sapling>

    GGGGGGGGGGGG
    GTTTTTGTTTTTG
    GTTTTTGTTTTTG
    GTTXTTGTTxTTG
    GTTTTTGTTTTTG
    GTTTTTGTTTTTG
    GGGGGGGGGGGG

    Trees do end up growing in these spaces, Big Ones end up growing higher up, just slightly, so that the smaller ones in the 5x5 areas next to them can grow too

    Ok, let me clear some things up with all of ya :tongue.gif:

    Yes, they are better to look at, and look more realistic.
    BUT
    Cutting them down, when you're growing a tree farm, is a PITA.

    More wood is not always a good thing... More wood = Longer time to reach it + Cutting time + Time to make your way down.

    Gravity-effected trees would make life better... even if they drop down like sand-blocks or gravel, but stay stuck to the 'trunk'

    Might be something worth working on for Notch, in near future :tongue.gif:

    Anyone else here, besides me, frustrated with the new tree algorithm? I mean, They are CRAZY! and sometimes impossible to reach without going to the VERY TOP of the tree and working down :|

    Seriously? XD These are annoying!

    Earlier, I got a massive tree, that was easily spread out over 15 blocks (across) and at least a good 15 in height ... with stumps of wood ALL OVER The place.

    Let's see some other crazy trees you guys grow/find... and hear your opinions

    posted a message on New content accessibility on existing saves?
    Well, I know you can access the recipes without going from your area, but what I'm really wondering about is, what about the new materials and blocks?

    I've dug out a pretty massive cave , so far, and I don't want to go and start digging a new one a bit down the road, nor start a new game, to have the new blocks.

    If i'm underground, how far out would i Have to dig 'forward' to get to the new stuff? (I am currently on the 'lava level' of the map, and not much else below me)

    posted a message on Underground Trees. The how, with pictures
    <Cross posted from Survival forum, cause it was in the wrong place :tongue.gif:>

    Firstly. Trees grow underground, provided there are either torches around the sapling you plant, on at least 4 sides, and one block below the 'ground' block. (Ground blocks are the dirt-looking ones). And at the same time, make sure the tree has at least 2 blocks to grow on either side, and about 6 blocks up (a 5x5x6 block so to speak, taking the middle block of the sapling into consideration)
    In Example
    (G = Ground block , S= Sapling, T=Torch, L=Lava, | = Empty Space <needed>)

    From above:
    |||T|||
    T||S||T
    |||T|||

    From 1st person view:
    |||S|||
    T||G||T

    Same trick works with lava, just make sure the lava is either 1 block below the sapling's ground block, or on the same leve and around it
    From first person:
    |||S|||
    L||G||L

    OR
    |||S|||
    |||G|||
    L||L||L

    Here are some pictures :biggrin.gif:
    Lava-grown Glass-walkway tree :biggrin.gif: Cause I wanted to see if it was possible, and it is

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

    Now here is the easy trick to growing Trees:
    1) Clear a large area, with some tall spaces
    2) Get some Ground/Dirt Blocks
    3) Follow the above instructions :biggrin.gif:
    4) Looks like this..

    5)???
    6) after about a day or 2, ingame, PROFIT! like so
