Yeah, but even movies and video games say that on the cover (and in the material as well), however I can still let my friends borrow it and no one cares. Seems like legally they have to say that just to prevent pirating, but I am not endorsing pirating. I am not giving free copies of the game, I am simply improving the game-play of the game, which in turn makes the consumer want it more, ergo if you want to get technical, they should really be thanking me for increasing their interest in the game (and no, I'm not conceded, I'm merely presenting a flaw in the logistics)

Edit: If they log into my server, that means they have a paid account, which means they bought it. Therefore they already have the files, I'm just supplying a modification through a merge folder. I'm not distributing any additional files that they need to pay for, they already have it.

Edit: Also it is 100% lawful to distribute digital media to owners of said media, therefore even though I may be breaking "The one major rule", I am not breaking the law.

    I don't think you're quite getting it.

    Short Answer:

No. You can't offer those files for download, plain and simple.

    Long answer:

You just can't distribute anything of theirs. Simple as that. They put it in the EULA not because the want to prevent pirating, but because they want to ensure that they have legal control over their intellectual properties.

Letting a friend borrow a physical media such as a game disc or movie, it's understood that that person isn't getting a copy, they are getting the actual purchased version of said media. When you allow anyone to download the jar files that you have modified, you are allowing a copy to be made and taken into their possession. That is expressly prohibited as per Mojang's EULA.

Now, if you have expressed permission from the authors of the mods you use on your server, you can then, and only then, offer a download link of the mods and settings files. But you cannot distribute the modified jar file that is owned my Mojang. The users will have to simply install them their selves.

And on another note; Just because a user connects, doesn't mean they paid for it. For all Mojang knows, the server is in offline mode and anyone can connect with any name. Even if that isn't the case, there is still a possibility for hackers to fake a login and gain access to servers. It's a known issue, and it does happen.

I'm sorry if this sounds too harsh but it's the truth. I recommend you take down any officially distributed downloads that Mojang owns. You're completely welcome to distribute settings and text documents that make the mods behave in the fashion you want them to, but you MUST get permission from the owners of the mods if you want to distribute the mods themselves.

I hope that was as straightforward as possible.

I haven't been able to solve it. It appears the server has a problem with the 1 minecraft account. The only options I can think of are a complete server reset or buying a new account. Like I said though, you're friend's case may be different

Based on what you just told me, it isn't an issue with the 1 account, therefore buying a new account wouldn't solve anything. What you explained was that even when he logged in with your account, he still couldn't connect. Therefore it's his computer/network, not you and not the account.

Anyways the next step will be to have him change his account pass and if that doesn't work, I will ask him to log in using my credentials and if that doesn't work, I have to ask him to reset his network to defaults and try again. If not that, then the only thing I can think of left would be to have him reinstall (or make a temp new install on free space) of his OS and try it then. Else, I've got nothing.

I don't know if this is it, but his ISP could be blocking the needed port. Try changing the port the server is running on.

Ok I will try that when I can.

Even that shouldn't make any difference. If he had thoroughly gorked his network settings, nothing would work.

Man, there's just nothing reasonable I can think of that would allow him to ping and tracert you, but not be able to connect, given that other users with similar setups can connect just fine.

Forgive me for not re-reading the whole thread. You've rechecked your whitelist/banned-ips/banned-players files to know that he didn't in some insane fashion slip in there. Ditto the router, if it has an IP ban feature. Did we verify that he can connect to other Minecraft servers?

Drives me out of my mind that absolutely nothing jumps out that could reasonably be this problem.

He doesn't have anywhere else he can play so no luck trying any other server. I'm going to ask him to make one and see if I can connect myself. Also yes I verified that the white-list isn't in use atm, banned-ips and banned-players are both empty. My network has no banned ip's either. He hasn't been able to check if his network somehow banned me (but this issue occurred after the 1.5 update when the server was at a different players' house. Ever since then he hasn't been able to connect, and even with the server relocation, he still can't connect. What's driving me mad is that I'm sure I can fix it if he lets me go into his network and test some things. But he can't get in right now either so that's not possible. Do you know any public servers that don't need his name to white-listed that he could try?

What operating system is your friend running? I've only ever heard of problems like this with Linux or other Unix-y OS, because they are very configurable. Windows is really unlikely to have troubles like this.

If I were in your position, I would probably set up Wireshark (or another network packet sniffer) and see if I can find any sign of him actually making it inside your network. It's a PITA to use though, with a steep learning curve if you're not used to network protocol.

It's vexing how terrifically odd this problem is, and how hard you've worked at it to still not get it running. :sad.gif:

He is running Windows 7 (64), My computer is running Windows 7 (64), and the computer my server is on is running Windows 7 (64). The rest of my users have a wide range, usually Windows 7 both 32 and 64. But I also have a good chunk of Mac clients connecting, and even 2 Ubuntu clients connecting. Otherwise it's XP and Vista for a couple people.

When he ran tracert, it completed with 13 hops (he lives less than 10 miles away) and he has Verizon FIOS and I have Comcast. My other users connect through FIOS, Comcast, Qwest, and CenturyLink. So Like you said, this is all just very strange. I'm to the point that asking him to reinstall his OS is the next likely test. Otherwise he needs to reset his network to defaults. He mentioned he set up his own IP for his router and he hasn't connected to change anything in so long that he forgot what the IP is. But he went on a vacation last week so we haven't been able to make any progress yet.

I don't know whether it's the same in your friend's case but I know that in my case it is definately THE SERVER'S FAULT. I had a friend attempt to log in from his computer using my profile and he could not log in.

And.. what? How did you solve the issue? What was causing the error?

I tried to explain that now 17 of 18 people can connect. And I've had as many as 8 people online at once (with no lag or errors in server operation). The theoretical limit based on computer and bandwidth, is 11 users.

So he has Ping'd me, and ran tracert. Both of which have been successful. Is it possible that when he tries to connect to the server, the port isn't redirecting him to that specific machine on my network? I have an SMC router (SMCWBR14-N4). Is it possible the I could add a specific "If X.X.X.X tries to connect, send him to X.X.X.X on the network"? Maybe it's a conflict between his network hardware and mine? We had a total of 8 players online last night (with no lag! yay!) so that confirms that everyone of the now 18 players on my server can connect, except for him.

Thanks! I repped every post that helped me btw. I've always been interested in learning how to code and how that works ever since I tried action scripting in my animation class in high school. Just never had the money to go take a course.

Well I'm not really sure what happened that was different but I woke up today and created a new bridge for my PS3 so I can download some stuff and when I turned off my PS3, the PC still had its connection. Weird. Just a WTF Windows moment I guess. Thanks to those who tried to help me.

Hmm. Well there must be a software fix for this because the network itself is just fine.

I can relate to your friend as I am having a similar problem just with different errors. While I haven't managed to try this myself yet, he should try a different minecraft account on his network and also his minecraft account on some one else's network just to pinpoint where the problem lies. Hope that helps.

Hmm he's a really security oriented guy when it comes to his passwords. Maybe I can convince him to change it to something we both know for a moment... But I doubt he will go for it.

Get a switch and plug it into the wall plate?

No I don't think you guys understand. I have 1 wallplate port that supplies the ethernet connection from my router that's across the house. Therefore I want my PC plugged into it. I can share the internet my PC gets with any other device connected to my 2nd ethernet port on my PC. In this case my PS3. The only way to share it though is to have my PC configured for a bridge between the 2 adapter ports. And for some strange reason, when the PS3 is off, the bridge refuses to send internet to my PC still. I'm trying to figure out why. This has nothing to do with my wired network setup outside of the PS3 being connected to my PC. Ignore everything else about my physical network situation.

I'm not going to buy anything else for my network when the issue is a software issue.

Tip: Buy a router. Makes life so much easier.

Don't need shitty responses like this.

I have a router. That's how I get internet to every device in my house, including wireless.

The issue is that the location of my PC (which I personally require to be wired) is also where my PS3 is. This location is terrible for wireless signals due to various types of interference through the house.

I wasn't asking about routers, I was asking specifically about sharing an internet connection through Windows 7. On my Mac, I can just turn on sharing and whatever is plugged into the shared port will receive internet. But my Mac is a laptop and is on wireless. hell, on XP I used to be able to do the same thing. Just check a box to enable sharing and select an output port. But with Windows 7 if I just enable sharing, it doesn't let me select a port so it doesn't share it. It will only deliver internet to my PS3 if I create a bridged connection. The issue there-in is that when the PS3 is turned off, for some reason the bridge stops allowing my PC to accept an internet signal too.

    The network looks like this;

Modem > Router > 4 different wall plates > cable running through the walls > wall plate (specifically to the room where my PC and PS3 are) > PC (onboard ethernet) > PS3 (plugged into other PCI ethernet jack I installed).

So I have my internet coming to my PC which runs Windows 7 (64) from the built in ethernet port on my motherboard. I also have a PCI gb ethernet card in the machine and that's how I supply a ethernet line to my PS3 for internet and streaming. I accomplished this by selecting both in my network adapters page and creating a bridge. Now when my PS3 is on I get great full speed and fast streaming. The issue is, when I turn off my PS3, my PC stops having an internet connection. Why is this? Is there a way to set this up to work so I don't have to keep creating and deleting the network bridge?
