posted a message on Flat 3x3 Piston Trapdoor (Horizontal piston door)

After watching Docm77 showcase a new 3x3 piston door design in his Hermitcraft series, I decided to see if I could make it work as a flat trapdoor. I had to change a few things around to get the double piston retraction to work, but the timings are the same as for the vertical design (making it one of the fastest 3x3 trapdoors around, to my knowledge).

The redstone is pretty simple - the screenshot below should show everything you need to know to build it. Here's the link to Docm's episode with the original design:

posted a message on Phantom Membrane Farm (1.13)

So, I've been working on this in my survival world, and I wanted to share it with everyone. I started with ilmango's design, which was broken when the game was updated so that phantoms now only drop membranes when killed by the player (also they don't drown any more). This means that instead of killing them, we need to collect them.

    Brief outline of the mechanics:

This farm uses the mob AI to direct the phantoms into a killing chamber. When phantoms attack, they swoop in at about the head height of the player, then fly straight up to come around for another pass. This design tries to force them through a tripwire, which triggers a sticky piston to retract the entrance to the killing chamber. The AFK spot is directly beneath the piston, since the game treats them as transparent blocks.

The killing chamber itself uses Enchantment Tables to create a gap through which the phantoms can be seen, but that they can't get through (my initial design used slabs and I died VERY quickly!) They can then be killed with a Looting sword to maximise the drops. You can place a button somewhere along the redstone line to manually open the killing chamber, causing the membranes to fall down to the hoppers below.

I included an AFK fish farm in the version I built in Survival - Docm77's new design is only 1 block wide, so fits nicely into the AFK zone. I should also note that yes, this farm only works if the phantoms attack you from one side - in my survival world I built this next to a large building so this isn't really an issue. I'm sure this can be improved on though.

posted a message on What have you done recently?

I killed my first Wither! I had NOT intended to give it a fair fight - because I'm a wimp when it comes to mob battles, I'd planned to use the bedrock trick to trap and suffocate it. I must have picked a bad spot though, because it got loose and came at me. Luckily I had all my best gear on and some golden apples to hand - I puckered hard and managed to rush it and take it out with my Smite V sword.

posted a message on Zero-redstone blaze farm. Insane XP and STACKS of blaze rods.

A suggestion for building this in survival - if you're going to fill your spawning room with something to prevent spawns while you work on the rest, use sand/gravel instead of Netherrack. Once you're done with the build, you can knock out the filler using a 1-high hole in the base of the spawning room wall, and any blazes that spawn won't be able to aggro you through it.

Of course, if you do this you'll probably need to build a floor on your spawning room out of something that defies gravity, or you'll have to clear out your funnel as well. It depends how much extra time you're willing to spend on the build to avoid the chance of death by blaze.

Or of course you could just wear all your second-best gear, chug some fire resist potions and battle through it.

posted a message on What is the stupidest thing you've done on your survival world?

I had a real n00b moment last week. So I'm building in a mooshroom biome and I've built a darkroom spawner just offshore (where the biome changes to Ocean). I can't get the outside of the thing to look the way I want it to, so I've spent a lot of time working on it - there's cobblestone scaffolding all over the thing on a near-permanent basis.

I'm sure you can see where this is going.

So, on the shoreline just across from the spawner I've built an AFK fish farm. I've calculated the position of the farm to optimise the number of drops from the spawner - it relies on mob movement to work, so I need to AFK far enough away that mobs spawn, but close enough that they still move around. The fish farm was an afterthought really - I don't get much time in the day for resource gathering so I tend to go AFK overnight to make up for it.

So I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself at this point - I'm getting good drop rates from the spawner while still being able to AFK fish, and I've even worked up a basic squid farm underneath the spawner. So I stick a weight on my Use Item key and call it a night.

Cut to the next morning - "Venetrix2 drowned while trying to escape a skeleton".

Yeah. That scaffolding I mentioned? I forgot to light it properly, so come night time a skelly spawned up there. It must have tracked me round the shoreline and shot me into the water. Had all my gear on me, as well as a bunch of building blocks. Lost the lot - no idea how long I was sitting on the death screen for.

The moral of the story is, when you're building in a mooshroom biome it's really easy to get complacent about lighting your builds. Oh, and the fish farm is now behind a securely closed door!
