Well, I have had problems with MC too. I had the 1.8 pre-view and it was good. Then when it actually came out i had to tone down my graphics. Now I have the 1.9 prerelease and I have to have my render on short or tiny to play.

I've spoken on this quite a bit now and honestly all I've ever seen is this "It's a beta... it'll have a purpose one day" or "It'll be fixed in the next update" which is honestly just saying "Well I hope it'll be fixed soon" because it isn't even based upon any concrete details. It is just stating that it'll be fixed soon because it is a beta, or because they're working on it. Notch also said modding support would be added sometime soon around 3-4 months ago. So I fail to hold any optimism that notch will get this all completed int a timely manner. Because he already knows that there is a section of people who will like it no matter what, so why bother making the game better when he can just make it the same and it'll still sell.
I think this is a great point. I saw threads on here as far back as 1.6 or 1.5 saying that someone was bored and needed ideas or that the game was not as interesting. With most of the replies being something about the game being in beta and that new stuff will come. I have not been playing MC as long as most people here but I do think it should be obvious to everyone that MC is losing or is going to lose fans. When high-grossing games hit later this year like COD, BF3 and Skyrim, then many people will buy them. People will stop playing MC to play one of those games. But, yes, some people will come back to play MC but most people will think as you did and say "Why? It wasnt that fun any way. And nothing really exciting was added."
I think the reason MC was so great when it first came out in alpha and into early beta, is that is was still getting core features of the game. But once the premise of the game was set and the core established everything thing else was mostly add-ons. They were new things, but they added very little overall.
The one time I had wolves, I built a bunker into the side of a mountain. It was pretty small. I then told them to sit and placed sand on top of them and smothered them. I then turned the bunker into a shrine for the wolves.
More stuff to dig out of the ground ideally. Not just new metals to make different iterations of shovels with, but things with unique functions, like redstone and lapis. I know it may be a bit much to create, but this is MINEcraft, and I'd like to have more then six things to mine for.

After you mine for so long there really is no need to go back down to mine. Once you have enough diamond for some tools and maybe armor, mining becomes about stockpiling. Minerals, more metals, new stone types. Something.

I think i know how you did it, but I suck with redstone. If you don't want to make a tutorial I will brush up on redstone. But if you do make one it would be awesome.
So everything is up to date on my MC. I had TMI before 1.6 but now it wont work at all. I put the .class files in the .jar but it doesnt come up in the game. I force updated my MC atleast twice but nothing. The only difference is my free winrar ran out so i have to use 7zip. Help?
