I've been checking it every day, and I still can't upload.
I've asked people if there was any other way and they said no.
So, what is this "manual" way you speak of?
Thank you for your well mannered response. Allow me to retort.
My original recipe idea was for 3 iron, 1 glass 1 lightstone dust 1 glass, 3 iron; however i thought that used way too much iron, and after narrowing it down to 1 column, there is no room for glass in the recipe. I also thought of using gold, but decided against that because gold isn't abundant enough. That would make lanterns harder to craft, and suddenly just using lightstone blocks instead of lanterns becomes easier, since you only need one hard-to-get ingredient to craft it.
If iron is in too many recipes then use lumber.
By "carryable" i meant you equip a lantern and the light follows you. On second thought, this should be easy for Notch to do, considering the mod community found many solutions.
A lightstone lantern would have the same light radius as a torch, but be infinite.
A lightstone block would have maybe TWICE the radius, making the cost to benefit ratio better. Would you rather make 9 lightstone lanterns, or 1 lightstone block? The math says the 9 lanterns would light more, but at a cost of the other mats. In the end the light radius for both methods could be fine tuned so the difference isn't so dramatic.
What's the difference between getting 4 dusts from a block and using 4 for a lantern, and getting 1 dust from a block and using 1 for a lantern?
Perhaps other numbers could be tweaked according to difficulty. Say, the frequency of diamond. Or the chance of getting pork chops.
This is beyond the scope of the lantern idea, though.
The torch grace period is a good idea.
I'm not proposing exact numbers. Just an outline.
Maybe Notch already has it figured out to his liking.
Make torches finite, but still have a 1 chunk soft glow to find in darkness, and then be relightable with flint/steel.
Make lanterns infinite, and made with lightstone dust. This gives a reason for going to the Nether, but not required as torches could be relighted.
Craftable with 1 lightstone dust sandwiched between 2 iron.
Lanterns will not be carryable.
Currently, lightstone is craftable with 9 lightstone dust, which makes stationary lanterns obsolete, this is why lanterns should be made with 1 lightstone dust and give the same amount of light as a torch, and lightstone blocks give their usual amount of light. That way lanterns will serve a purpose, without being obsolete.
To make everyone happy, use difficulty settings. Torches will be infinite in peaceful and easy modes. On the hardest mode, torches would go out completely.
Stop complaining about ideas to add more content to the game.
Mods are cool but updates are bad? Puhleez.
i'm looking for a good server to build great looking structures on.
i'm not interested in playing survival.
I just want to build
here's something i've done: viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=138473
My name is Vagrant.
Whatever you do with your server is up to you, and will be cool either way.
I'm just interested in building good looking structures, either for looks or for an rp server.
i'm going on 25, have plenty of time to devote to building, and would make a great addition to your op team.
Construction spanned several months. Unfortunately the server has been lost so I am unable to show any screenshots of the layout of rooms, staircases (including a large spiral staircase which could be flooded upon attack), gates, dining rooms, kitchens, bridges, chandeliers, etc.
The castle was carved and built without any plan, other than following the shape of the land and placing towers and walls organically to enhance the shape of the land it was built upon. Standard castle architecture and technology was also kept in mind.

I love how you say this nice, round, cylindrical structure is going to be "less blocky" in game. XD
