Yes the Xbox One Edition has the same style of multiplayer as the Xbox 360 Edition. You have to be friends or friends of friends with someone to play in their world.
I'd be ok with Obsidian tools too. Have them be a tier between Iron and Diamond. Or make them the same durability as diamond but without as much enchantability, lacking things like fortune and silk-touch. I'm ok with obsidian tools mining the same things as stone tools as well. Meaning you couldn't mine gold, diamonds, and redstone with them. Seems like an even trade-off to me.
As TrueArmyRanger suggested, make sure Generate Structures is checked. That option generates strongholds, mineshafts and villages. Loading the world in creative and flying around mapping until you hit a village is what I do to check out a new map as well. Also remember that only plains and deserts can generate villages.
It's only normal if you made the iron golem yourself. Naturally spawned ones should be able to hurt you, even on Peaceful. You have to hit either them or a villager but they should attack back.
Empty chests and spawners not working right are known bugs. You can see the whole list in the Official Bug List thread linked right at the top of the thread list.
My prediction is M$ will wrap up PC updates within a year, allowing the console editions to also catch up and come to a close. Then Minecraft 2. We can also expect M$ to launch their own servers for multiplayer, both on Xbox Live and PC. In addition, I would excpect changes to the PC version so they can sell official texture, skin and map packs.
