You don't spawn on an "ocean map." Several cartographs show there is far more land biomes than oceans biomes in each seed but you just had the luck of ending up on the deserted island that happens to be directly in the center of all the connected oceans. All Mojang needs to do is alter the spawn code to restrict ocean biomes as a spawn location. Spawn on the mainland instead and we'll walk to the ocean if we want to.
I know it's not an ocean map. I was just calling it that because it was a lot of ocean biomes all next to each other with no other biome breaking the monotony.
So... what you are saying is that if I spawn on a GIANT landmass with biome after biome after biome, only broken up by rivers and the occasional small "swamp lake", that at some point it will end and be lots of ocean biomes and no land?
I do think it is a bug. What it seems is when you spawn on what I like to call an "ocean" map, the seed is all messed up and it's spawing a larger amount of ocean biomes than the rest. It isn't even. There is nothing wrong with large oceans, but there need to be large land to go with it.
Oh no!
You'll have dig out the terrain and chop down some trees!
Oh the horror!
I just meant that I prefer pre-1.8 mountains. It seems the new mountain biome generation is just really large spikey hills with very few trees, and NO HILLS in any other biomes.
You spawn on a small island with no trees. Next to you is a Ravine. Below that Ravine, a second Ravine going down to the Lava level. Connected to this Ravine is an Abandoned Mineshaft containg Wood and even Melon Seeds. A waterfall will take you down. Are you ready for the challege?
Goals: Survive.
Rules: In honor of the name of the seed, the one rule is Wood-based. Once you go down the Ravine you can not come back up to the surface except by LADDER (~50 ladders) and you also need to have two additional stacks of wood. (Enough wood to build a single path bridge to the closest island that has a tree.)
Tips:
Lava can your friend! Until you can craft weapons that is.
Make sure you stay on the waterfall all the way down. It's a long fall!
Spoiler for finding the Mineshaft:
Once you reach the bottom turn right and go straigt back until you reach a drop off. Look up.
Spoiler for finding the Melon Seeds:
Once you enter the Mineshaft, look right (if the ravine is to your back), and there is a chest with Melon seeds.
Aside: I'd been looking for a good seed to do a Ravine Challenge when I came across this one. It's a fairly straight forward challenge, but I like it. If you have any suggestions or changes feel free to post if you feel they fit the challenge. Also, I wasn't sure where to post this as all the 1.8 threads in the SSP forum (which is where Challenge Threads normally are) are being moved here. So here it is I guess. Enjoy!
No really... that's the seed: "Amanda's Awesome Seed"

This one is a beaut. It's got 4 villages (two within sight of the spawn!) and 6 ravines all within a 1000 x 600 block area, with your spawn being dead center. Not much in the way of mountains or oceans but all the other biomes are present and accounted for. The underwater surface ravine is particularly nice.
I'm not 100%... but this is sorta half right and half wrong. New land and terrain will generate, HOWEVER I didn't see ANY Abandoned Mineshafts in the new generated stuff. (using Minutor) Anyone else not getting the Mineshafts (and i'm guessing Villages too?
"Made cats less eager to sit on things" Less jumping is good! "Made cats less patient" Does this mean that all 9 of my cats just appearing beside me for no reason was NOT a bug? And now they are going to do it EVEN MORE?

It seems that I either have WAY to many trees, NO trees, or impassable terrain (with no trees).
