posted a message on Any maps you're working on right now?

(Please delete or move if not allowed, it's been a long time since I used the forums.)

Out of curiosity and boredom in between the times I work on a stupidly big project, I have to ask...are there any adventure maps you're working on at the moment, whether it be singleplayer, a team effort or for a server? If so, care to tell me a little bit about it? Like for instance, if it's sci-fi, parkour, minigames, showing off your building skills etc...? A short summary of the map I'm building right now is a medieval and tropical set of large Elven islands heavy on story with towns, cities, jungles, ruins and an alien culture focused around magic.

posted a message on Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders [compatible with Minecraft 1.12.2 via OptiFine]

Fishing rods have always been broken TBH, even in Vanilla. As long as the buoy particle is still there, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It is not a bug, at least not with the shader. The shader recognizes the texture as a slightly elevated, overlapping model on top of the other block, most likely due to Conquest's method of creating the effect. The only other pack I know that does a similar connected texture effect is PureBDCraft, although it's possible Sphax takes a different route with creating the effect; So I recommend you give it a try and tell me how it goes.

Good to know, it's what I figured...just one problem. A big (very big) adventure map i'm creating is literally based around the Conquest pack. Over-arcing stories, inspirations, grand cities and landscapes, intended to be used with a full team, easter eggs, etc...About 6 months of work now.

have you tried with another resource pack that also has connected textures like this?

No, I haven't. I don't currently know of any other resource pack that does this (albeit I don't use many to begin with - i'm picky when it comes to packs).

A possible bug in the renewed version? The resource pack is Conquest. The pack uses a special grass texture that has its little 'blades' of grass overlap eachother, and i'm assuming SEUS recognizes this as an entity or model that should be given shadows? Is there a way to fix this? As for the gray parts of the textures, Conquest has a special feature where certain blocks will 'blend' in with other adjacent blocks to create a smooth and high quality surface. The shadow issue only occurs when it is in direct sunlight or moonlight - darkness and torch light will have it appear as normal.

(For anyone who wants to use this pack, which i'd argue is the best in MC's entire mod base, link below.)

How would a 1050Ti and i3 6100 combo fair in using this shaderpack after tweaking? 1080p.

I'm having a problem here and I don't know where else to put it. I can't put this on the Forge forums because I don't understand the last question when registering "What is Lex's full nick name?". (Who is Lex?!)

1.11 OptiFine B3, Forge 2188, and 1.11 WorldEdit crash on startup from the launcher and I don't understand why. I have no clear instructions on how to properly install all three in conjunction with each other and I can't remember how I did it for 1.10.2.

Any assistance? Please? I CANNOT play this game without OptiFine's performance or WorldEdit for building.

posted a message on Looking for mod suggestions for creative building and map editing

The title says it all. I've had so many ideas for singleplayer creative maps that I've wanted to see come to life for years now, but it would be far too overwhelming for me to do it one block at a time by hand, so I need some suggestions for mod(s) that can essentially edit the map in almost any way I want for the sake of creative building.

For the 5+ years I've played Minecraft, all of my builds were done solo, one block at a time, and by hand, and that's seriously limited the scale of which I can build without overwhelming me with sheer size. There are some incredibly intelligent and experienced builders out there, and I'm looking to you for advice on mods. My only request is that it's compatible with OptiFine and the Windows 7 x64 version of Minecraft. I always keep my Minecraft and OptiFine up to date with the latest non-preview or snapshot versions.

posted a message on What's your preferred way to go mining? Caves or Shafts?

Do you prefer exploring caves or mining shafts? Why or why not? Discuss!

    My pick: Cave exploring

Why: Personally, I think shafts just take up way too many resources, and gives you a lot of excess Cobblestone that you might not even need. I also feel like it's a lot more time consuming as opposed to simply sprinting through a cave. In personal experience, I have always found myself obtaining a lot more ores, finding more Dungeons, killing more Mobs, and running into more Lava and Water respectively all in a natural cave instead of a shaft. I might sound like a noob saying that cave exploring is the better choice, but I honestly can't see the point in spending so much Iron or Diamond creating your own shaft, filling your inventory with a lot of Cobblestone in the process, when you could simply explore a cave that was already sort of mined out for you, complete with a whole bunch of ores inside those caves.

And to be fair, unless an experienced player knows how to properly make a shaft in the most effective way possible, then there really is no point in mining one out. As if that's not enough, you'll need a lot more torches to keep your shaft lit, unlike a natural cave where a Lava deposit can keep your cave lit up for you, not to mention that Lava serves as a convenient and useful incinerator for your junk blocks, and can be used as a good supply of Obsidian for your Nether Portal or base on a server to protect your chests full of valuables. Finally, hostile mobs that spawn in a naturally dark cave means that you can farm a lot of experience points for Enchanting by setting up a simple makeshift mob trap around a Dungeon spawner, which in itself is fairly easy to find in a natural cave. A natural cave close to the surface can also be shaped into a makeshift house with a little Cobblestone and some creativity. Some would argue that you can easily get long in a big cave system, but a smart player would always know to block off dead ends and have signs or other markers to let a player find their way out without having to use up durability on your pickaxe mining a staircase to the surface.

posted a message on How many torches have you used?

I actually don't use that many, because I have Optifine which has a graphical option to have any light source emit light whenever it is in your hand or dropped on the ground in addition to their normal functions. While I don't know whether or not this light prevents mobs from spawning wherever the light is being emitted at, it doesn't matter to me either way. The main thing I use this for is simply so that I can see inside a cave, and the darker a cavern is, the more mobs I can fight, which means more experience points and more item drops from mobs, some of which can be very helpful, like Bones from a Skeleton to speed up the growth of my farm via Bonemeal, or Spider Eye and Gunpowder for brewing potions. It also means I don't have to carry nor use nearly as many Sticks and Coal to craft more Torches when needed, saving inventory space.

Some people might say that it's cheating, but try saying that when your caves are infested with hostile mobs that want to kill you constantly. It really makes for a great challenge when you're mining, and adds to the creepiness and scare factor of the game, especially if you have your brightness setting on 'Moody', adding to the ambiance. It really does immerse you.

posted a message on What is the Most Reliable Foodsource?

Your three best choices by far are Cooked Porkchop, Steak, and Golden Carrots.

    Why:

While they don't give as many food bars as Rabbit or Mushroom Stew, which give five respectively, these two foods do not stack and are considerably harder to make than simply breeding some Cows or Pigs and cooking their Raw Beef and Raw Porkchop in the Furnace. Also, while it may seem like Golden Carrots are not a very smart choice, Golden Nuggets themselves are actually very easy to obtain by simply killing Zombie Pigmen, and Carrots are also easily obtainable through various means.

My main reason for saying that these three are the most reliable food source, however, is due to Saturation. In case you don't know what Saturation is, it essentially means how long a food source will keep your hunger meter up until it starts going down again. Have you ever noticed that foods like Rotten Flesh, Apples, Melon, or Potatoes don't last very long? That's because their Saturation is very low, meaning you have to eat a lot more of it to actually keep your Food Meter up consistently. A higher Saturation level also means that a food will heal more of your health for a longer period of time after you eat it, meaning that it is more effective in combat, and is a great choice for a player who needs to jump and/or sprint a lot due to their higher Saturation. Finally, a higher Saturation means you won't have to carry nor eat as many of said food to keep yourself from starving, making it efficient in terms of inventory space.

The memory setting in Java controls the memory visible in the program. Additionally Java can allocate the same amout of memory for internal use (JVM memory, graphics buffers, file buffers, etc). So when Java runs with limit 1G it can effectively allocate up to 2G.
On a computer with 4G RAM Minecraft should be limited to 1-2G maximum, otherwise the OS may begin to swap which is very slow.
Allocating more than 1G RAM is only needed if you want to run over 16 chunks render distance or if you use big resource packs - 64x and above. Running with a lot of mods may need more memory, probably 2G should be OK.

I really appreciate the information you gave me. However, I'm not entirely sure how I'd go about allocating an extra gigabyte, since my client has it set to one gigabyte by default. I've seen numerous sources or tutorials on it, and yet they all differ in some way or another, so I can't get a consistent answer to know for certain that it's the proper way to do it.

Hi, I wanted to ask a simple question regarding my Minecraft performance. While it performs exceptionally well with some very high settings in both the vanilla options and those added by your mod, the question I had in particular is referring to RAM. I wanted to know how much of it I can safely allocate to my game client without creating the possibility for any serious problems to occur, assuming that I have few, if any RAM-intensive programs running in the foreground or background that I can close. I currently have 4 gigabytes of RAM, am not using any shader packs or resource packs of any kind, and I tend to keep most other programs closed when I'm playing, with the occasional exception of things such as:

-A Chrome window with one or two tabs, usually one of them being YouTube

-Nvidia Inspector to monitor my GPU temperature and adjust the fan speed accordingly

-Core Temp to monitor my CPU temperature

-Windows Task Manager to monitor the percentage of my RAM and CPU being used by Minecraft

-Steam for the sole purpose of chatting with my friends

I do not always have these open. As a matter of fact, I normally do not have Chrome open with YouTube, instead putting that on my smartphone which I prop up to the side so I can glance over and watch it from there. On a normal day, the only programs I actively keep open when playing Minecraft are Core Temp, which is minimized to the Task Bar, and Nvidia Inspector to ensure that my GPU isn't overheating, particularly when I'm bench-marking. As for Steam, I keep it minimized to the System Tray almost all the time, sometimes even in Offline Mode, depending on whether or not I play with the Extreme render distance for my larger and more extensive builds. Basically, I try to keep the amount of open or intensive programs, whether in the foreground or background, to a minimum when I'm playing video games on my PC for the sake of keeping the heat lower and the frame-rate higher. I am not asking being I need more RAM. I am simply asking this out of curiosity and, if the day ever did come where I would need additional RAM for the game, I would know how much to allocate.

I didn't mean that in that we're "enemies". I like to think of enemy as a much harsher word, one used for those who have opposed each other for a significant amount of time, instead of chatting back and forth to each other for roughly an hour on a videogame forum. I meant that in a way in which I simply think you're not exactly the kindest person I've met, given our initial encounter. First impressions do make a large impact, after all. Like, when you said the word 'kid', in truth, that struck me as rude or mean in some way. Needless to say, it was not taken lightly, especially when he who reads that as a reply to his comment is a legal adult. The way you said it almost made me feel as thought you saw me as a stereotypical twelve year old child that people like to use on the Internet so often, and quite annoying, I might add. But do I "hate" you as much as other people I've met? No, not even remotely close. Compared to some others, your reply was the equivalent to the every-day troll reply you find in the YouTube comments section of a popular video in terms of annoyance, which is minimal. After all, it's not the first time I've seen the 'kid' remark, nor will it be the last.

My current conditions are less than ideal, so do forgive me for the dissapointment. But you have highlighted one of my points beautifully; a grand display of your egotism.

Also, i find it funny how you come here and try to assume "dominance", in need of a better word, without actually giving us reason to believe you. I await to be enlightened.

You don't have to believe me by any means, nor does anyone else, as a matter of fact. If my initial appearance was egotistical to you, forgive me on that. The egotistical appearance was not my intention, as was the assumption of dominance, as you put it. On a personal level, I don't logically see how attempting to assume dominance would contribute in any significant manner. In truth, attempting to do so seems pointless to me, but I would assume that's a discussion for a whole other day. I have my doubts that you'd be interested in arguing about it anyway.

The egotism in your signature lends you little credibility, kid. Just putting that out there.

Regarding the visual improvements vs SEUS, we can instantly see that you lack an eye for detail when it comes to graphical fidelity, and effects. Might i add that the recommendation of a 980 appears to be more of a "safety net" to guarantee the FPS stated, as i have a constant 40+ FPS on my 970.

As for the visual improveme vs performance, compromises have to be made. On a java platform, its difficult to achieve high performance as well as having the highest graphical fidelity vs the competition. While other shader packs are optimized for more performance for general gameplay, this shader pack is geared for higher graphical fidelity, which in turn results in lower fps. It is stated on the Continuum website that this shader pack is for high end PCs and cinematics. You say that the performance lost vs the effects added is not worth it. That is subjective. For me, i prefer the extra effects as im what you would call a "graphics *****". Each new effect WILL inevitably have an fps hit, and in the end they all add up.

I will conclude here, and hope you renounce your egotistic ways for a more modest approach, which would be much appreciated by all

You don't know what you're talking about. For such an elaborate and detailed paragraph, I genuinely would've expected more from you, but I suppose not, and that really makes me disappointed in our technical community, with few exceptions.
