posted a message on What do YOU do when you start your brand new world

I need a sense of safety and security, so after making basic tools and collecting a bit of food I usually burrow into the nearest hill and mine down to get coal and iron. Sometimes I need to burn wood for charcoal at the beginning. Once I have iron armor and a shield, I venture out by day. I don't travel far looking for a better spot unless I have a bed. If I find a village, I often make it my temporary base while I secure it with fences and lighting and make it into a thriving trading outpost. This can take many days because I have to build farms, collect livestock, etc. I always sleep at night until the village is secured so the villagers are kept safe.

In my current world, which is the seed used in Hermitcraft season 7, I spawned on a tiny island and had to swim to shore to find a hill to burrow into. this ended up being my permanent cozy base, because it had woods and ocean and just appealed to me. It also had an abandoned mineshaft below which gave me tons of resources at the very beginning. I travel from there to various trading villages by railroad, by boat or by Nether portal.

posted a message on How to find endermen quickly

There are two aspects to your method - one is to collect ender pearls, the other is to gain XP by killing Endermen.

    1) getting pearls: I personally like to trade with villagers, so I can get more Ender pearls than I ever would need by trading and would not build an Enderman farm to get them.

I've been watching a lot of speedrunners lately on YouTube and they either trade with villagers or collect pearls along the way from Endermen they meet while racing to their next goal. Sometimes they get their very last necessary pearls by killing Endermen in a stronghold. I can't recall any other way I've seen them collect Ender pearls. None bother to build any kind of Enderman trap, so if speed in getting enough Ender pearls to get to the End is the only consideration, I assume that would be the way to go.

    2) XP farm: I think your method would be very useful to kill two birds with one stone: getting XP and collecting pearls. Pearls are always useful to have if one is skillful enough to toss them accurately to teleport. Since I personally am more likely to toss them where I DON'T want to go, I only need them for making Ender chests. I don't use XP farms, so I can't judge the efficacy of your method, or compare it with other Ender farms, but if it works well I'm sure many will find it useful.

posted a message on Guardian farm without draining exterior of monument or spoiling the look of it?

I considered not draining the area surrounding my ocean monument, but eventually decided to do so because I wanted to be able to walk around the entire thing and have a beautiful entrance area with a stairway up to the ground floor. I now have a paved (with prism and polished diorite slabs) entrance and am planning on planting some trees there. The bottom half of my monument was unfortunately buried in rock to a great extent and it had to be completely mined free. I couldn’t have done it if the surrounding area hadn’t been drained. Before starting the draining process I placed a conduit on the roof which helped immensely (especially for draining the inside). I don’t have a beacon like Wattles did.

I also built one of the cylinders from Wattle’s video exactly according to plan. It gives me more resources than I will ever need, so I won’t bother with the second tower. Part of the cylinder extends to the lower level underneath the monument’s bottom prism floor, and as mentioned above I had to mine out this whole area. I am considering replacing all the sand walls that are encasing the monument with glass to preserve the look of the ocean around the monument. This needs some planning, however, and I’m not sure it is worth the effort.

Wattles mentioned in his video that he would be decorating the cylinder to make it look more appealing, and I hope he does in a future video because I am not a talented decorator when left to my own devices.

One interesting fact is that guardians keep spawning in the 3x3 water box surrounding the conduit on the roof. They don’t bother me or significantly reduce the spawn rate in the cylinder, but you can see their tails sticking out when you go by and it looks funny.

EDIT: I am uploading a screenshot of my entry area. All the paved area under the monument was originally buried in stone. On the right you can see the bottom of the guardian farm.

Avoiding water only means they won't put their feet into it (ie, walking or choosing water/water-covered blocks to teleport to). If there's a block behind the water barrier that is dry and teleportable they can teleport past the water barrier. You should isolate your farm for 32 blocks outwards from the edges of the farm with either water or blocks they cannot teleport to.

Hmmm... I'm not experienced enough to understand this advice. I don't think they would spawn or teleport inside the tank-like structure which is full of water, lava, and artificial flooring made of signs and open gates. Even if they teleported right next to the tank my understanding from your previous advice is that they should only be able to place blocks, and not remove the glass or prismarine. Even if they placed blocks next to the tank, that wouldn't destroy anything. What am I missing here?

While they wouldn't be able to pick up blocks, as long as there's a safe place for them to teleport inside they might be able to place blocks inside. Not sure if that would hurt you or not.

I hadn't thought of that possibility. I don't think they could teleport inside the guardian farm to mess it up because they avoid water, but they could place blocks in front of walls and fence gates, allowing mobs to climb over them. I haven't seen any mobs in the drained area in days though, since I was very careful to light everything up. I hear an occasional slime squishing, but haven't been able to locate it. I will keep the possibility in mind of endermen interfering in projects by placing blocks though. Thank you for bringing it up!

Normally this would be the end of the discussion, but in this case the blocks endermen can pick up can be configured (I think this came about in 1.13?). It's probably not reasonable to expect most worlds--single-player or otherwise--to have changed this config file, but if you're on a server and you don't control stuff like this you might want to ask before assuming and potentially losing something you didn't want to lose (or having to break into a gigantic farm to fix stuff).

Also, because it's configurable, in the case of an updated world I guess the config could change as new blocks and behaviors and considerations are implemented. This could lead to situations where you think something is one thing but then you see the opposite occurring.

Thanks for the additional information! I am playing on a single-player world, so a server configuration doesn't apply in my case, though I am sure that other users reading this are and are glad for the tip. The other issue you mention, about possible behavior changes brought about by updates, is also something I hadn't thought about, so I'm really glad you mentioned it. I will have to keep my eye on that.

What did you use to build it with? Endermen can only pick up a limited number of blocks, mostly plant and ground-type blocks; they can't pick up stone, cobblestone, wood, and many others:

Oh hurray, I didn't know there was a limit on the kind of blocks they picked up. My farm is made out of prismarine and glass, so it is safe! Thanks for giving me peace of mind!

posted a message on Do I have to worry about Endermen destroying my guardian farm?

I just build my very first mob farm - a guardian farm. I never built an automated farm before because I like to do things manually, but the only way to have a huge supply of sea lanterns, which I love, is by making a guardian farm, so I bit the bullet and built one.

I used the tutorial by the YouTuber Wattles to build the farm. It is in an ocean monument which I completely drained and lit up. Light levels are high enough that mobs won't spawn in it and the lower level has a slab floor.

    Question:

Do I have to worry about Endermen teleporting in and removing blocks from the farm when I am AFK? I would hate for water and lava to escape the farm.

The outside of the monument is lit up very well and the nearby tiny island which has my nether portal on it is also lit up. But my home base is completely lit up as well, and I still sometimes hear an Enderman and I have found dirt blocks in my living room that an Enderman had deposited.

It was a pain in the neck making this farm and it took me a whole week. First draining the entire square area around the monument, then draining the inside. The bottom level was the worst part because creepers kept blowing things up until I finally managed to clear it all out (half was submerged in rock) and light it all up. I would hate for my work to be ruined by a stupid Enderman.

posted a message on Hardcore: avoiding death by lava by quitting game?

This cheat for staying alive in hardcore mode was new to me. I tried to google it but didn‘t find anything. I wonder if it works both in Java and in Bedrock.

The player falls into lava and immediately quits the game in shock. When he reloads, his health doesn‘t immediately diminish so he can swim towards shore. He keeps repeating this process (quitting and reloading) until he is on dry land and stops burning.

For me it is only a curiosity since I don‘t play hardcore and I wouldn‘t mind losing my stuff in lava if I fell in.

    He falls around minute 4:27.

By saying it's a "slap in the face to the building community", you're implying that the building community is a victim, the one being neglected.

That implies no such thing. At least you apologized for being toxic.

Can I add that you sound like an entitled child when you say that building is so important and imply that it’s neglected when the game gets dozens of new building blocks with each update, but we’ve only gotten one ore in the last ~8 years.

Sure, go right ahead and insult me if it makes you feel better. Sticks and stones and whatnot. But don't put words in my mouth. I never said or implied that building is neglected. I merely disagreed with your comment that blocks are "meaningless cosmetic items".

By the way, Minecraft is still in the top ten list of the most popular computer games in 2020, so Mojang is doing something right.

I disagree with the OP's position. I love Minecraft because it is a sandbox game that I can build my own world in. The additions that have been made to the game have served to give me more options in the sandbox. They don't make the game less simple, just more fun for me.

Calling new blocks "meaningless cosmetic items" is a slap in the face to the huge building community.

The OP has every right not to like the direction the game is going in. It is a mistake however to assume that this is the only "right" opinion.

posted a message on Fixed enchanting?!

It seems to me that the differences of opinion regarding the amount of XP needed for enchanting depend on one's playstyle.

If your playstyle gives you a lot of XP (e.g. if you thrive on mob-hunting or have XP farms) you most likely think XP is too easy to come by.

If your playstyle makes you do everything manually and you avoid mobs at all cost, you will struggle to get all the XP you need.

I personally depend on chicken breeding for 99% of my XP. I am satisfied with the current requirements for enchanting. If the XP requirement was raised, the XP farmers and mob hunters would probably not be affected, but I would. If the XP requirement was raised to the extent that even XP farmers and mob hunters would struggle, it would take me forever to enchant anything, and I couldn't mend the equipment I have before it breaks completely.

In my opinion, if the XP requirement is raised, it is the kind of feature that should be customizable via a game option.

    Quote from oltanker»

I have not noticed any real change in "prices" other than when I defeat raiders going after the village. That got me a discount. Otherwise I bring multiple villagers to maxed out trading levels and the "prices" for trading remain the same. I also found that the traveling traders really don't have anything worthwhile to trade. I fail to see exactly what their benefit is.

Are you playing the Java edition? If so, this is very odd. My villagers lower their prices all the time when I trade with them, however I never bothered to pay attention to how many trades I have to make or whether I have to trade with multiple villagers to make this happen. Not paying attention to what the trades are can be costly, however. Once I was merrily trading with a lot of villagers who had all lowered their prices until I noticed that one villager was charging me much more for a particular trade. Apparently the law of supply and demand also plays a role in pricing, so the price can go up for an article you trade too much even if you are popular in the village.

posted a message on I can't keep up.

I'm pretty sure the game is becoming more complex because the vast majority of users are eager for new content. I assume this because if it weren't the case, it would be cheaper for the manufacturer not to do any development work on the product.

If you want to play an old version of the game, you are free to do so if you have the Java version. That is one of the major advantages of Java Minecraft for fans of older versions.
