I also suggest checking the box that lets you specify a path to use for that profile and then changing the path to something other than .minecraft to prevent unintentionally corrupting a save. (I personally have mine set up to use .minecraft_snapshot for all the snapshot stuff.)Quote from mctigerIt's not an update (at least not now) - it's called a "snapshot" which is kind of like a preview or a "beta" version of the next update (but still full of bugs). I recommend you to wait untill Minecraft 1.8 is finally released (expecially if you are a beginner in Minecraft).
As I said those "Snapshot Versions" still have many bugs and can destroy your saved worlds (in the worst case of course).
If you still want to try it, you have to edit your profile in the launcher of the game and allow snapshot verions to be used (but - just to be safe - don't load any of your existing worlds into this snapshot).
You can switch the profile back to the last stable version any time.

Oct 8, 2013The_Fool76 posted a message on Saturday with Sach: My First NightI don't remember too much of my very first time playing. (So many thousands of hours spent in the game, they flow past like a torrent.) Some people who played on the MUD I ran suggested it to me and I was intrigued enough by what I saw to send Notch a couple of bucks for access to the indev version. Mostly I remember trying to figure out how to punch a tree down. (Oooh! I have to hold down the button! I don't just click it like a mad man.) Knowing me, I probably then promptly wandered into a cave and got blown up.Posted in: News
I do remember the first time I played on a Floating Islands map. The spawn house was on top of a layer of gravel. I walked out went "oh hey gravel!" dug out a block and Ayeeee! *splat* Despite that rather inauspicious start, the floating island worlds became my favorite type to play on. It was always a challenge to see how many islands you could build your way to. I also remember being rather sad when infdev didn't include a floating islands generator option. (Though the new amplified terrain generator helps bring back some of that feel of trying to build suspended over a vast abyss.)
Then, sometime around the time the map seeds were added (I think) I discovered you could just replace the art files in minecraft.jar and re-texture the game. It was all downhill from there. I might not be one of the better know texture artists but I'm certainly one of the oldest. (In terms of how long I've been doing this, not in terms of actual age.) The very first texture pack I ever made was Metalcraft. The individual thread for that pack has the questionable distinction of being the very last thread in thetextureresource pack sub-forum. (I just only bother with updating my collection thread linked in my sig these days.) -

Working as intended. Whatever texture pack you are using messed up with the texture for packed ice. Unlike ice, packed ice is a non-transparent block and should NOT have a transparent texture placed on it. -

No new shaders were added. In terms of resource packs the only changes were some renaming of the double tall plant images and the addition of red_sand.png and minecart_command_block.pngQuote from pizzahutKO
I think there is a 'blind' shader and as mentioned Red Sand & Minecart with Command Block

I don't consider a direct link that gets disabled when you hit a bandwidth cap to be particularly useful, but then my monthly downloads are well into the thousands. (I host my packs myself and I have stuff up on Planet Minecraft as well. My actual total download counts are scary.)Quote from ravandThat is not true, if you are using mediafire you can still use a direct link it will be disabled upon too much traffic tho and there isn't only mediafire or rapidshare or whatever out there, there are tons of other ways to host your texture packs conviniently on even with direct links, for example dropbox or google drive (which also have clever syncing features). Mediafire is just the most popular one and is imo extremely inconvinient, the curse method is nowhere different and better.
And what exactly prevents u from uploading different versions on MediaFire (for example)? infact MediaFire even stores all the other previous uploads which you can later on even rename to the proper version.
No, since curse wants to make money from the members and authors visiting the page and using the curse client and since you could abuse it.
As for keeping multiple versions of the files, that doesn't include the other meta-data that comes along with the version history on the project page on Curse. Such as what MC version it's for, what the changelog was for that version, etc.
Disclaimer: I do come at this from the perspective of someone who has their own site. I already host all my stuff myself, so to me Curse is more a marketing tool than anything else and the Client is darned handy. You give me a good set of features and a user experience that doesn't abuse people and I'm happy. If I really wanted to make money off this stuff I'd be using it as a portfolio in a job application so I have no objection to Curse making some money off the stuff I do in return for the extra visibility and nice features they provide.
TLDR If that was too long for you to read then you don't really care about what I have to say anyway. -
Feb 6, 2013The_Fool76 posted a message on Curse Client, Pt2: Texture Pack Uploads Made EasyI have a question in regards to packs hosted on Curse, specifically in regards to using those packs as a server pack. Setting up a pack as a server pack requires using a direct link to the zipfile which is available on the project page. However this bypasses any ad views or download throttling you have in place for non-premium members. Would pack authors still get rewards for such downloads? Should server owners not do that? Should server owners post visible links to the Curse page for the pack? Have you guys even thought about this that much?Posted in: News

Anyway ... here are some leaf textures I whipped up using some photos I took this weekend as a test to see how hard it was to make seamless textures from real images. The textures themselves are 64x64 shown tiled 4x4. Let me know what you think.

Yup, make the first post into more of an index and put the bulk of the content elsewhere in the thread. You will have links to it so it shouldn't be too confusing to manage. (Click the link in the first post, or just bookmark it.) Of course it IS a bit of work to do that so I can completely understand why you might not want to. I confess though that my main motivation in even suggesting that though is slightly selfish. Your first post tends to do bad things to the oooooold computer I use at work due to the amount of stuff in it. >_> Every time I accidentally go to it, the poor thing starts hyperventilating (the CPU fan spins all the way up).

I'm just worried that this rabbit hole is rather deep. Do we also need obsidian and gold doors? How about wool and leaf doors? What about diamond or emerald or lapis doors? Part of me says "absolutely yes, doors for ALL THE MATERIALS!" but I doubt most people would agree. That and well, we don't need Mojang to add more door types if we have the API. (Mostly I just really want the API)
1
I think we all probably have a nice long list of blocks we would like to see added. I'd rather they not go too crazy though with what they put in the vanilla game. IMO that sort of feature creeping is better left for us to put in via the Plugin API rather than putting it in the core game.

Another thing you might want to consider is breaking your post up into smaller sub-sections and putting those in as replies and then direct linking to those replies from the original post. (You can get a direct link to a given reply by clicking the #134 in the upper right corner of it.) The less 'fancy' content you have in a single post the more reliable the forum seems when editing it.

All of the fences, fence gates and doors now have wood specific variants. (fences got added in b and doors in d)
Now if you will excuse me, I think I need to go whimper in a corner for a while now while I am overwhelmed by just how far behind in texturing I really am at the moment.

Unfortunately no. That is just the item model file which all things that you can have in your inventory get. We don't have a model file for the full stand as it appears when placed in the world.

Another week, another snapshot. Main thing I noticed is that when they added the new stone type (red sandstone) this time Mojang actually added all of the stair/slab/etc. variants along with it. We probably have the new model format to thank for this. (Can't wait till we can add new stones ourselves.)

The main changes we have seen have been all the new model related stuff. This has brought with it vanilla random textures (random models really) and the ability to disable hardcoded color tinting on blocks. (Still can't change the tint color though without something like MCpatcher) The model format is a tad complex though so I'd suggest waiting till someone makes a decent free model creation tool before poking that too heavily.
As for new textures/blocks/things:
Slime Blocks, 3 new stones, 4 underwater temple blocks including a new light block, bunnies, banners, armor stands, red sandstone (and associated steps/slabs), a darkness sensor (toggle for the daylight sensor), 2 new underwater monsters, 2 items related to the underwater temple, and associated bunny parts. (I -think- that's the full general list, see my 'Latest Changes' thread for the actual detailed list.)
1
In regards to model orientation, the main issue is that the arm position is inconsistent between 1st and 3rd person views. In 1st person the arm is held straight out in front of the player model, in 3rd it hangs down at the side. Given that, it's probably going to confuse fewer people if the axis orientation of the model remains consistent relative to the screen as opposed to being relative to the player model. (+Y is always up)

I can't wait to see what kind of stuff you do with the random model variants.

You mean you haven't already added it in as a random option for obsidian now that the default game supports such things? Tsk tsk.
