I think it would be cool to have more optics related blocks.
Colored lighting (torch/glowstone block + lapis lazuli flake = blue torch/glowstone block, torch/glowstone block + rose = red torch/glowstone block etc) and other blocks that affect light in some way. Lenses, mirrors, prisms, and stained glass blocks/panes would be AWESOME!
Minecraft is a first person, 3-dimensional sandbox game. But it also combines elements from many other games and even software. So I'm basically posting this as a kind of "thank you" to the other games and programs I taught myself how to play and use over the years that ultimately helped me with Minecraft.
-From Terragen, I learned how 3-dimensional space is represented on the computer. I learned how to create and manipulate landscapes. I learned about height maps.
-From Bryce 5, I learned about perspective in 3D space in real time. I learned about lighting. I learned about view distance. I learned about creating complex 3D objects from primitives only.
-From MS Paint, I learned pixel art and 2D relationships.
-From SimCity, I learned how to lay out a town using zoning for different types of buildings. I learned that industrial, power, and housing are the most important first steps. I learned about creating efficient transportation systems. I learned about providing adequate utilities and supply-lines.
-From The Sims, I learned effective house layout and design.
-From Descent Mission Builder II, JED, and UnrealEd I learned good level design.
-From Age of Empires, I learned that food and wood are extremely important in the beginning. I learned defense and basic town layout.
All of these wonderful games and programs have certainly had a positive impact on my Minecraft building experience. I'd like to know what other programs and videogames have helped you with your builds.
Part of any videogame is suspension of disbelief. Steve can punch down a tree, but the most visible part of Minecraft is the landscape of course.
I still have my Minecraft Alpha 1.2.6 JAR file which I play sometimes for the nostalgia. I think the terrain is a little too realistic now especially with Large Biomes.
My Minecraft just crashed while I was exploring a fully zoomed out map in creative mode. I don't remember where MC saved the crash txt file. I was running the game in Windowed mode at 1024 x 768.

Lots of good points in this thread. I sometimes get bored of Minecraft myself.
I've always loved starting a new world. There's a certain thrill of starting with nothing and then building your way up. But I will admit that I get bored once I have my base established with all the farming facilities and utility rooms.
Maybe once you get one base set up, you could work on a small village. This might maintain the excitement of building house after house for a while. Maybe get 10 bases fully operational with farms and furnace rooms and the like.
Minecraft is a sandbox game that combines the planning of SimCity with the construction of Legos with the eye of a 3D CGI artist with the role-playing of Diablo (or any other RPG) with the exploration of an MMO. This is, in my opinion, why Minecraft is one of the best games ever created.
1. No griefing. 2. Do not harass other players. 3. Explore, build, and have fun!
This server has economy, land protection, a dynamic map, cities, markets, and Ventrillo access. It also has some anti-grief and anti X-Ray plugins. Other than that, this server is purely vanilla survival. Everything on this server is legitimately built; not even the admin spawns himself items!
We also play League of Legends, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, and Eve Online.
So I updated my Minecraft client from 1.2.3 to 1.2.5 and my stats reset again! I knew this was going to happen, so I backed up all my stats as of 1.2.3 (April 1st, I believe). But when I log into Minecraft with my 1.2.5 JAR with the Digix launcher after replacing the stats folder, it doesn't do anything; it still resets my stats!
Usually replacing the current stats folder with the backup works, but it didn't this time. I realllly don't want to lose my 2,500 km walked and my 180,000 stone blocks mined lol. Did stats finally go server-side or is something else going on?
I regularly play on a server called Kadabracraft. Its a nice vanilla SMP server with a few plug-ins (anti-grief, iconomy, etc). Not even the admin spawns himself items and no whitelist!

Nice community, lots of regulars, vanilla survival (not even the admin spawns himself items!)
So I'm working on this city on a vanilla SMP server and I'm giving it a Germanic/Nordic forest theme. For the centerpiece I want to build a GIANT tree, at the scale of a Yggdrasil. The city is 250 x 250, and I'm planning on having this tree so massive that people can see its branches looming overhead from anywhere in the city.
I consider myself a good builder but this is something I've never attempted, even in Creative. Has anyone done this before and have suggestions on how to get started? Are there guidelines on how a realistic tree is shaped? Any mathematical formula I can follow for branch distribution, for example? Is there maybe a program that can genorate a tree for me to copy?
Speaking of night lamps, wouldn't it be awesome if there were different colored lights? Like a blue redstone lamp or a green torch (stick + coal + cactus green dye, maybe)? I'm sure this has been suggested before.
BTW I have the game Myst lying around here somewhere, never bothered to play it too much though, and I knew there was lore, but an actual book? Wow. Maybe the game was based of of it? Or maybe it's the other way around?
There are three Myst books; Myst: The Book of Atrus (takes pace before the first Myst game), Myst: The Book of Ti'ana (takes place between Myst and Riven), and Myst: The Book of D'ni (takes place right before Myst III). I've only read the first one, though.
From what I understand the games came first and all the books are just backstory.
