Good quick brief on the launchers! My impression is the LiteLauncher -- I just looked at it -- is primarily good for use on servers and for multiplayer MineCraft. I didn't see many mods there, that were relevant for singleplayer.
I fiddled around a little trying to get Optifine and Java 64 bit and a launcher (any launcher) to cooperate with a couple of other mods, and so far, haven't gotten it all working together.
Yes, it seems a lot of docs are outdated. For example, I read that you can't delete profiles you make in Twitch, but guess what? You CAN delete a profile. I know that I'm a latecomer to this fascination, so probably I just need to catch up!!
This may be a very dumb question. But when I try and extract this newest OptiFine, with MC 1.11.2 installed, the extractor says to first run version 1.11.2 once, manually. What, specifically, does this mean? I've run MineCraft 1.11.2 many times using the native launcher. Maybe I need to point the launcher at a different directory?

I know that's not "beginner," but it seems to me that lots of beginners, once past the first night and a bit, would like to understand how MagicLauncher is different from the Minecraft native launcher, and how things like LiteLoader or Twitch compare to them!
Thank you! I'm getting somewhere, now! I managed to install 64 bit Java 8, and I can get ML to see it. I next need to work on the rest of your instructions - to get the mods and Forge etc., in to the proper folders. I had not realized right away, that hovering over the tabs on the Setup in ML will explain where things should be, too.
It would be nice if there were some more explanation about the ML messages that can show up in the setup windows - "No Forge," and "no mods" and "???" in yellow or red, is not quite enough help for at least this user. But, also I believe, this is a weak point in all of the launchers. Twitch doesn't offer much information at all, and the MC launcher sometimes doesn't seem to be helpful, either. I am doing a lot of trial and error!

I find it intriguing how much I dislike playing in Normal! My self-preservation drive seems to be very strong haha. I mostly play on PEACEFUL! I keep trying to wean myself away and play on Easy, but usually wind up getting disgusted and switching back. Mostly, it's creepers that tire me out; I did notice that in some mods, I can turn off spawning of specific mobs, so I have done that once and probably will do it again. I am also the type who doesn't enjoy killing the animal mobs, so maybe it's just pacifism, huh?

Now, let's see whether I can include one here. I'm pretty embarrassed to share this, please be gentle folks. I'm just responding to AstralMagic's request to see.
See the image in the attachment, for one view. I just stacked cobble up going across the land. Then I've been working on getting torches all over the place. As you see, I haven't done any terraforming at all, but I have a dwelling in a cave along one side of the walled compound, and I have a chicken ranch on the far side, away from the sugarcane plot. I've got river access alongside the sugarcane plot too .... if there were trading and shipping in the game, I'd be in good shape. Anyway, it's a fairly nice location, I think.
Ha, I should have added that my compound is quite a rustic one!! Remember I'm still new to this game (and I keep distracting myself by trying new modpacks or learning about activating resource packs in new worlds too). I will try and get a screen shot for you, though!
I've been having great success farming sugar cane, but less at overcoming my dislike for slaying cows. I did build a nice big wall around my compound on one of my worlds. I am in the phase where I create worlds that seem to be lacking in some respect, deleting them, and trying again. Most worlds lately seem to have only one kind of passive mob, and last night several of my (modded) tries were barren of any ores other than redstone and coal. I think I'm going back to playing Vanilla worlds for a bit.
Congratulations on taking the leap. Sounds like a nice machine, to me. I got drawn into MC by the younger generation in our family, but have been a mildly active gamer in other respects for some time. Mod choice depends a whole lot, IMO, on how you want to play the game, and there's a lot of latitude on that. I have a very old PC (I'm gonna have to start seriously shopping soon!) so I just have the current version of Minecraft, with JourneyMap to help with navigation, and have been fooling around with Biomes O' Plenty lately. I get some lag sometimes, I'd imagine though, that with an i5 you should be in pretty good shape. Hopefully some more experienced MC gamers will chime in!
Since I am still really new at MineCraft, I am pretty excited even to see the "boring" necessary things people are making! I also wind up falling short of grand visions, and building cube-like dwellings thus far.
My big discovery, this weekend, is learning how to install a mod. I was finding the maps in the game miserably useless, so I just set up JourneyMap and created a new world. It is my first world with ice peaks! I may not always play with mods, but it sure is helping keep me from getting utterly lost as I so often have before on my MC worlds.
I only spotted one polar bear, we left one another alone.
That's great fun, I would looove to sit and watch skellies get chased around! I hate 'em, too.
I have a bunch o horses that I am enjoying keeping an eye on. I haven't had much luck, taming any, but we keep on trying. And I seem to be a whiz at growing reeds (sugar cane) although I can't seem to get much of any other crop going.
