If you are using a 64-bit machine, try getting 64-bit java at http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

@OP: Are you using a texture pack? Try using the default textures.

posted a message on So now that zombies drop rotten flesh...
I think that rotten meat is actually useful in a pinch if you have a really low food meter, since the poison effect doesn't stack. You eat loads to fill up your food meter and heal, then it goes down, but it's so easy to get that it's rewarding to go out and mash those zombies!

posted a message on After Playing 1.8
The abandoned mineshafts are very common for testing purposes. The spawn rate will be greatly reduced once the official 1.8 update comes out. The reason why it is so high right now is because if they're easy to find it will be easier to spot bugs.

To put that in perspective, let's say that there is a 1 in 1000 chance of some sort of horrible bug with the mineshafts. If only, say, 10,000 mineshafts are found, then it will be somewhat difficult to spot the bug since it will only occur about 10 times. If there are 100,000 mineshafts, though, the bug will happen about 100 times!

Look at my sexy stacked mushroom tower:

I slightly modified it to make 3-block-high roofs and added glass panels at the top to make it very functional as a watchtower!

posted a message on Sheep not Despawning
I was playing the 1.8 preview yesterday, and I sheared a sheep to make my first bed and to get some vines. On a whim, I decided not to kill the sheep I just sheared, and left it. Hours of playing later, I am confused by the fact that there seems to be an absence of animals near my home, and I explore. I notice that the sheep I sheared hours ago is still existent, and upon investigation of my nearby grasslands biome, I see at least five sheep stuck in a two-block-high hole, along with a few chickens and a cow. Hours later, after meeting that non-despawning sheared sheep again, I was running around in the grassy biome again, and I came across another hole with several other animals jumping around. The fact that there are many animals in places far from my house and the fact that the sheared sheep hasn't despawned yet today is leading me to think that animals or perhaps sheep do not despawn. Perhaps this is a feature to prepare for 1.9 possibly having sheep eating grass (making individual sheep valuable and therefore non-despawning).

Post your explanations, possible thoughts, and other relevant information.

Awesome idea; we should push for implementation. This would be awesome, since I'm not in the mood to lose my clay-mushroom-and-vine swamp. I am now about 50% more afraid of death.

posted a message on 1.8's removal of the Toggle Fog Key (F) Has just comepletely ruined Minecraft for me.
    Quote from Chasingu

Well, the every time you click F to change render, the server has to send the surrounding data around the player to the player again and the player has to re process it. Have 1,000 people on a server and about 200 of them are doing it constantly, and you could have a problem.

You're implying that 1/5 of all players in minecraft have to do this.

posted a message on Dissecting the furnace bug
After being incredibly intrigued by the appearance of the furnace crash bug, I ran minecraft in the console. After starting a dummy world and crashing the game, I noticed that the console spat out a nullpointerexception, and the cause was located at zz.class at the variable 'b'. Perhaps we should investigate and possibly invent a fix by examining what causes the bug and, therefore, have an experienced java coder to remove this bug. After, we can enjoy using furnaces AND be able to release a full bug report to Notch to make it easier for him to fix.

posted a message on 1.8 has very little substance.
This isn't the content update. This is the "adventure" update to convince you to get around the world and explore. The abandoned mineshafts DO have a reward, by the way. You can find chests that contain valuable materials.
