I am drafting out a series of novels, and developing the arcs of all said characters. My favorite so far has been of a character named Lionel. The story takes place in a medieval based realistic fantasy world. Please tell me what you think of Lionel's character arc.
Lionel starts out as a boy living in the country side of a powerful kingdom with a strong military. He lives with a wealthy and well-respected old man who said to hold magical powers. The old man tells Lionel that he took him in after his parents, both heralding from influential lines of nobility, were assassinated by spies of a neighboring kingdom. Lionel is skinny and physically less capable than his local town friends, and is often the subject of teasing.
As Lionel grows, he breifly runs away from his village with his friends in order to pursue a mysterious army marching through the countryside. The boys are able to deliver the information effectively to the capital of their kingdom, and an army is dispatched to counter the surprise attack. The boys are momentarily regarded as heroes. This experience forges a bond between Lionel and his friends, especially a boy named Joa, who heralds from a land far in the east.
As Lionel enters his teenage years, the old man reveals to him that he is actually his father, and that his mother was a prostitue the old man took pity on. The old man soon after dies, and Lionel realizes that he never had any magical powers and that throughout his life he had deceived and cheated many people. Lionel, left with nothing, takes up harder, physical field work and develops into a strong young man. His relationship with Joa grows tumultuous, as Joa grows moody and depressed. Joa eventually leaves to return to his home land to study at a university.
Upon Joas departure, Lionel feels extremely lost. He leaves his home town and travels a far distance to take up a oppurtunity for high paying work granted to him an old freind named Jon. Upon arriving to Jons coastal city, Lionel realizes that the work in the port is undesirable. He soon becomes infatuated with a local wealthy women. Lionel sneaks into her room one night to find her lying naked on her bed. He reachers over and kisses her, waking her. Guards burst in to the room and Lionel is accused of rape. Lionel flees through her bedroom window and leaves the town.
With a new bounty on his head, Lionel enters a dark phase to his life. Outcast by society, he flees to the mountains and joins the "fighting pits", a betting ring of fights to the death that is popular with criminals, outlaws, and bored farmers and sketchy traveling merchants. Lionel begins dominating in these under ground fighting leagues, using the techniques he learned from Joa. He makes money enough to eat, but is controlled by a man who claims ownership to him. One day, tired of his new lifestyle, Lionel attempts to flee the pits, only to be tracked down by his owner and imprisoned. A new man has entered the league, a 7 foot tall behemoth who has never lost a battle. Lionel is to fight him in the morning. Big money his being bet of this fight. The fight begins, and as soon as Lionel is handed his weapon, he stabs his "sponser" in the chest. Suddenly, a band of mysterious cloaked men apear kill Lionels oppenent and the members of the rioting crowd with arrows. They capture Lionel and inform his that they are taking him to the fight in leagues in a major southern city. Lionel contemplates ways of killing himself at this moment. Soldiers interrupt the carravan of the mysterious men and Lionel. The soldiers kill the men and upon hearing Lionels kingdom of origin, offer him to join the said kingdoms army preparing for a massive war ir be killed. Lionel joins to soldiers.
The next part of the story reunites Joa and Lionel. They are placed in the same squadron, and preform extremely well in combat. Joa takes up leader of their squardron after their commander is killed. Lionels leadership is commemorated and he is given his own squadron to command. He breaks his leg badly in battle, and is left on the battle field as on of the dead. He crawls out of the massive pile of dead bodies and attempts to make his way to a nearby village.
A monk from the village finds Lionel and nurses him back to health. Lionel befriends a group of women working in the convent, all of whom lost their families in the war. The convent functions as a hospital. And Lionel begins caing for the permenent patients, people who are untouchably sick or disabled, all rejected by society. Through this, the women and the monk inspire Lionel out of depression and help him to realize the importance of fighting for what you beleive in, and not fighting for money or advancing your rank in society.
Lionel takes this advice and leaves, and uses the money he made in war to buy weapons and armor.
Lionel reconnects with a mentor of his from the fighting pits, who he finds homeless, sitting in the city streets. The man is blind in his left eye now. Lionel and the man then devise a plan to assassinate the corrupt war mongering leaders in the kingdom, and usurp the throne of the empire of the wolf, the empire that has won the recent war. Lionel intends to bring order, peace and justice to the world for the first time in the history of man.
The series of assassinations goes well until Lionel discovers that Joa has porfitted enough from the war to purchase himself enough land and followers to be a king of sorts, of a small kingdom. Lionel realizes that Joa is part of the corruption and attempts to kill him. Joa circumvents the murder (which was planned in a so very creative way that i can not spoil it here) and Lionel is nearly killed, but flees, re breaking his leg in the process. Lionel eventually gets back on track with the assasinations and eventually arrivesat the capital of the empire of the wolf. He assassinates the emperor and wins the support of the people. Joa, taking advantage of the anarchy erupting after the series of assassinations, mounts numerous small kingdoms and raises an army to confront Lionel. Lionel, with command only over the localized city guard, is not able to defend against the attack, and the capital burns. Joa seeks Lionel out and the too fight, Lionel fights to keep his dream of a just centralized government alive, while Joa seeks revenge and justice for Lionels assasinations and secretly seeks the power Lionel has attempting to grant himself. Lionel dies, and Joa dies later of the poison on Lionels blades.
