Different servers will arrive at different security options. area ownership, tile ownership, etc. Servers with the most protected freedoms will be the popular ones. A sort of minecraft natural selection will choose the best option.
You can't be sure that he doesn't want it on steam because it's not on it now. Even if he doesn't, his opinions aren't ours, and we deserve to discuss the potential benefits of this service.
I like these single word answers, they really show the communities willingness to explore all possibilities and options.
Seriously though, steam support would be awesome for many reasons. Cross game communication, good server browsing and vastly larger selling potential, I definitely think Notch should look into it when he's nearing completion of the game. Short sited people and teenagers might be against this, but thank god they aren't making the game because it would probably be terrible if they were.
I just thought I'd try to foster the creative spirit of my fellow Minecrafters with a general purpose Minecraft art thread! Post doodles, concepts, and any crap you can come up with. (If it's not Minecraft themed however, it should go into the Art and Creativity forums) I suppose I'll start with a prince I came up with when Notch mentioned putting in random settlements and kingdoms.
Sentient fungus likely takes control of a tree, slowly eating away at it from the inside producing methane and working on finding a Mob to attack. I'm going for the "hates interlopers" theory on why. This now sentient and slowly dying tree would understandably be in constant pain, explaining the expression. The green exterior would either be a fungus mold or creeping ivy that is attracted to the nutrients released by decomposition (creeper, creeping ivy? eh? eh?) The reason it has 4 legs is because they are 4 roots that have sprung from the ground and been covered with the ivy. So this is essentially a zombie tree.
In my opinion, the pig thing may be dev. lore, but it's not really what the identity of the creeper is sticking as.
I feel that the creepers seem to be some sort of moss covered forest guardian. They seek out not the animals of the land, but instead only the land destroying mobs. I feel that their natural ability to destroy our crap is part of their drive to "take back the earth" if you will. As cool as sentient spore is, I never felt that they looked or felt mushroomy enough to give that impression.
I don't think many people have problem with fighting, or even mini-wars. What I think is disappointing about open ended online games is the unmitigated blood lust of pre-pubescent idiots. They see you and the first thing they can think to do is murder you and take your ****, because most games give you benefits for killing people, and no benefits for working together. (other than being a jack ass and killing the person later)
I propose respawn flags rather than claim flags. That way you can at least hold off against campers and overly violent guests.
So, the main problem with dropping your stuff or keeping your body in the server is that some people don't play mine craft every day. Us big kids have jobs and girlfriends and don't want to see all of their progress in getting tools and material lost after putting time into finding and crafting these things just because they don't hide in a subterranean bunker or play most of their life away. This game would be hard pressed to attract more players if multiplayer seemed simply unfair.

You probably just need to up your graphics setting from fast to fancy.

Oh and here's a doodle as long as we're on the subject of creepers:

I propose:
log=stick
To take material costs to a more reasonable level. it doesn't normally take 6 cubic meters of wood to make one sign
