    Question about that parts bin site....

    on the build page, if I select a CPU, it automatically only allows me to select MOBOs that are compatible?

    Does it also screen for all other components' compatibility as I select them, like ram, GPU, et al?

    He77, I might just build a whole new box if the compatibility headache is gone.

    In that case i'd probably go with what PistonPowered/Alexx suggested. Does your case have 4 PCI/PCIe expansion slots in the back, or 7/8 (ATX or mATX)? Depending on which it is, motherbaord choice may change. Knowing the brand/make of PSU may help too. While it may be an 800W model, there's the potential for it to be a Logisys/Raidmax/Athena etc, which would be bad.

    Also, out of curiosity, would perhaps you be able to zip up your mods folder and upload it to mega.co.nz or another file sharing site (Dropbox/Google Drive)? I want to see how well they all run on an overclocked (or stock) 2600K so I can get a bit of a baseline of how much performance is really needed for a stable framerate (and I really do not want to download them all individually :s).

    It has 7 PCI/PCIe slots (Im assuming youre asking about the row of slots of which my vid card is taking up two)... its a pretty big box.

    Here's the power supply;

    Its completely custom. I enjoyed the learning curve it took to build this... got a basic understanding of Forge, libraries, dictionaries, etc in the process... I learned enough to know that you should have the config files as well since i changed some values in the heavy worldgen mods. ie two separate zips.

    I know Im running some code-heavy / entity-heavy mods;

    Biomes o Plenty

    Underground biomes

    RWG

    Streams

    metalurgy

    plant mega pack

    Pams set

    Mo Creatures

    MCA

    I get it that Im putting some serious weight on my machine ;)

    (BTW) first time Ive ever zipped something successfully, lol. You guys have to understand that I suffered through the dawn of personal computing ('88-'95) when NOTHING was drag and drop or plug and play. And by suffered, I mean none of it was being taught in colleges and there was no wiki, or google, or any other DIY sights on the web, so most of the things that you guys take for granted about computing and networking and building etc, tasted like **** the first time I tried them. Understand that my trepidation on these things is born of a personal first-experience database that is not positive on most hardware and software issues..... like zipping, lol.

    Anyway... Im a zipper now.

    In this (very specific) circumstance, yes. It won't be as good as say.. an i5 or i7 for general multi-tasking though. Making it work also requires overclocking, if you're not comfortable with that it'd be better to spend an extra $120ish and get an i5-4690K/4590K.

    Definitely clueless about OCing. In theory I know what it is. But, I know myself and, I'd melt one down if I ever started playing with the throttle, sure as ****. Just replacing a couple components catches my breath a little. I completely F'ed up a computer self-build back in the late 90s, by not understanding compatibility. So Im spooked about what I dont know.

    Someone throw me a couple recommendations of a three piece fix; mobo/cpu/gpu that all work with my other components, and simple out of the box ready (no OCing pls).... One where I can just; Install, DL drivers, done, type of package? Easy is worth overpaying by 50-100 bucks to me.

    Ill probably just build myself a second all-new rig as a christmas present (when the new stuff is out). Id like to have two complete desktops for my home office/gaming room anyway, so my GF can play her WOW along side me. Might even get her to share a MC server w me if she had her own comp to use.

    Can you guys see enough info about my current rig in this thread to make a compatability-certain recommend on a mobo/cpu/gpu swap?

    I have an 800w power supply that I dont think shows anywhere in the above pics.

    PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor ($58.50 @ SuperBiiz)
    CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE 78.1 CFM CPU Cooler ($58.39 @ Newegg)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($125.99 @ SuperBiiz)
    Total: $242.88

    Would be able to hit 4.5GHz easily, probably up to 4.7 depending on silicon lottery. Good board with a good cooler, if you need extra performance in the future would easily be able to upgrade to an i5 or i7 and OC that quite heavily also.

    As for graphics card.. MSI GTX 960 OC? Total with 960 included comes to $420ish after rebates.

    Wait... you mean theres a $58 CPU out there that is better than mine? (I know, $242, actual cost to replace)

    2g ram, full mod load, vid settings whacked way way down (everything off/ 8chunk render dist), on a dead run into unloaded chunks.

    Whats the prognosis, and what would you do for under 500 beans?

    Hey Namezs (or anyone)

    If you were gonna upgrade to the GTX960 and a new CPU, considering my RAM and MOBO, what CPU would you recommend?

    or put more simply, considering the rest of my machine, what CPU/GPU combo would you recommend upgrading to... and keep it under $500 if you can, pls.

    Im smart enough to know that there is a LOT going on in a computer, but I never would have thought that having TOO MUCH RAM would slow things down... thats an easy enough fix... Ill also pull all my mods and run a test pure vanilla. wait one.

    EXACTLY the kind of advice I am looking for. You guys rock.

    My thinking is; update vid card to 970, and update CPU soon. Does that make sense or am I missing something?

    Now, tell me straight, Docs.... how bad is my CPU, and should I update it too/first?

    PS... namezs, thanks for the heads up on that parts site... i think im gonna like it.

    About a year ago, I asked on these forums for help to add/upgrade my RAM, and got EXCELLENT advice and even a half dozen links to amazon/ebay/new-egg listings.

    I'm hoping to repeat that success, but this time for a video card upgrade.

    1) My goal is to run 150+ mods, including a high end shader, and maintain a 40+FPS.

    2) I havent set a firm budget yet, but under $500 is an absolute. $300-400 is where I'll be most comfortable (if it meets my minecraft needs).

    3) I am not a comp wiz, a network guy, or a coder of any kind. Please speak in simplified terms.

    4) I **WILL BE** installing this new card myself, and will need one that comes with some instructions on how to do so.

    ---------I recently replaced my internal hard drive and installed a new OS, so I CAN follow instructions-----

    As far as the system I'll be adding to... let some picture tell my story;

    My usual FPS:

    But, often (especially when loading chunks or viewing many entities):

    Here are my sys specs:

    The MOBO:

    Sorry for the pics... i dont remember how to do spoilers.

    I build massive structures in survival mode, and I want them to look as awesome as some of the other creations i see done in creative.

    To understand what I'm aiming for click these links;

    Neuschwanstein Castle

    Regia Anglorum

    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    So I'm using Real World Gen and I would like to play with mo creatures. Where would I go in the configs to edit and make it so the mo creatures mobs spawn?

    I am using both RWG and MoCreatures, and yes the Critters spawn. I too wondered where to change a config, but it doesn't seem necessary to get them to spawn. I have ents and elephants and trukeys etc.... on the other hand, I have ALL of them everywhere, lol, so Im guessing that somewhere in teh configs of Custom Mob Spawner (not MoCreatures) there is a way to get the two mods to agree on biome names.

    I would like some guidance on this as well.
