    posted a message on [Software][Plugin][Bukkit] Runecraft [use bukkit page for download]

    This mod has been officially handed over to the new development team. At the time of this edit (April 2017), the team consists of Rivkiin, Amuxix, and Lvletei. They're doing an excellent job with my old mod and I'm amazed that it's still alive after all these years, I encourage anyone still reading this to check it out and support them!

    This topic is older than dirt, and aside from this message, has not been updated in probably more than a year. Obviously you can still use it, but don't expect the original post to be up-to-date. I've removed the version information from the title-- for any actual progress reports, check the bukkit page: http://dev.bukkit.or...gins/runecraft/ -- the current devs don't have access to this post because it's through my forum account, and I rarely do anything with the project anymore though I do still have an interest in its welfare. Therefore, please go to that page and pretend it's this post or something... it's guaranteed to be more accurate.

    Before you ask, this does not work with Single Player! I hope to support it one day (when the real API comes out) but it's not really worth the trouble to support two different versions of the code, especially when notch keeps changing his obfuscation on both, and we've been stuck with just Bukkit lately anyway.

    Attention Donators: I've started keeping a list of donators on the website, and it will soon be added to the download page which will be replacing the direct zip links. If you've donated in the past, please send me a PM with your minecraft username, the email you used for paypal, and the amount you donated, so I can check my transaction history to verify the donation. If you've already come up with a rune, you might as well include that so I can add it to my list of things to do after 3.0. Thanks :)

    Ctri has been making some amazing videos showcasing both the basics (Runecraft 101) and advanced techniques possible with Runecraft. Some of the stuff he talks about in the advanced tutorials are things that I didn't even know about myself-- so whether you're a novice or an expert, Ctri has some great videos for you! http://www.youtube.c...therunecrafter/

    2.15:
    True Names: The ability to cast runes onto other players
    Lightning Trap: You're no longer restricted to fire when it comes to traps
    Babel curse: A hilariously annoying curse to level upon your enemies.
    Engraver: You can now engrave onto any anvil-renamed item.
    True Name ward: Prevents players casting on to you whilst you're in range.
    Soft pegasus/ FTP: blocks that don't attach to other blocks no longer cause physics updates on movement.
    Tier rebalance: every block has had it's tier re-examined mathematically, and runes give EXPONENTIALLY more power per tier than before. More details in

    2.14 b-e: fixed a bugs with 2.14.

    2.14: Several new 'ward' runes that prevent activation of certain kinds of magic within their influence, see patterns links. New variant of phase/spleef blocks, see patterns links. Vertical waypoints. Here are the new templates, try them all!

    If you want more details, be sure to check out Ctri's videos, especially the Runecraft Through the Ages for 2.14.

    2.13: Too many things to mention. Check out Ctri's videos, they explain it far better than I could in this post.

    2.12:
    New runes -- see wiki as they are added, as well as c'tri's upcoming update video.
    Runecraft now fully supports the new height limit.
    Topsy Turvey now works vertically.

    2.11:
    New rune:
    :--+: :stair: :--+:
    :stair: :Water: :stair:
    :--+: :stair: :--+:
    :stair: = endstone, torches are redstone torches, and the water has a lillypad on it. World rune.

    You can now add "tier X Y" in disabled-runes.txt to change a block's tier. For instance, "tier 55 6" makes redstone tier 6, and "tier 57 0" makes diamond blocks tier 0. You cannot go past tier 6.

    2.10:
    * Bottomless cauldron
    * Identifier
    * Engraver
    * Power drill
    2.9.1:
    * Fix for Waypoints (vanilla)
    * Fix for Power Pick (bukkit)
    * Twinshot: Renamed to Multishot
    * Bow Of Light: Added redstone version; also ignores snow now

    2.8 is a really epic update! See the forum post!

    there was a link here but it crossed over to the dark side some time in the past two years

    Description:
    This is a thread for my magic mod, currently known as "Runecraft," for SMP based on the concept of pattern building and enchantable tools. Since it's in ongoing development, there might be some bugs, and I'm still open to your ideas.

    There are two kinds of "spells:" World spells and Tool spells. All spells are created as structures, or Runes. Basically, you arrange a pattern of blocks, then you activate the rune by right-clicking the center. Smooth stone, Dirt, Grass, Snow Covering, and Signs are treated like air in the rune pattern. The dimensions of a rune must be odd, so that a clear center is defined. If the center is made of air, right-click the ground directly under it.

    FrostyWolf has made some videos of the runes in this mod, but they're old and he hasn't done it for a while. Some of the early runes are covered though. Check out his youtube channel here: http://www.youtube.c...lf?feature=mhum

    Some dedicated people from the Kingdom of Lacertus are hosting an awesome server which features a Runecraft Academy for beginners. If you're looking to try out the mod, you might want to give this one a try! http://www.minecraft...?f=1014&t=41752

    If it looks like I'm not working on it, don't despair. Zeerix sends me patches to include every now and then when I don't feel like doing anything myself.

    Support Runecraft:
    If you decide you want to show your gratitude beyond a simple thankyou, my days (and zeerix's, he gets 50%) are made ever-so-much better when I see "notification of donation recieved" in my email inbox. :3

    I also have a bitcoin wallet: 13SC8WFS8ukDTU3UVNCicmo7Cw1x1QqVT6 -- if you donate btc, leave a PM with your wallet address so I know who to credit.

    Any amount is greatly appreciated though obviously more makes me happier, and makes me want to work harder!

    After 3.0 is out, anyone who donated will be allowed to suggest a special rune for me to add in their name. It can't be too imbalanced, and it will be placed at the far end of the tech tree. However, as a benefit for coming up with the idea and a thankyou for the donation, these donators will be given access to their own rune without having to advance the tech tree. If you donated while the old system was in place, you can decide whether or not to wait until 3.0 to have your rune implemented. If you donated to get the rune subscription (this is over now too), then you will continue to receive information about any secret runes added until 3.0. Thank you for your time and interest.

    Now that the formalities are out of the way... template/tutorial time! (or rather, a link to it, silly forum post size >_>)

    RUNE TEMPLATES / TUTORIALS
    NOTE: The rune template list above is VERY outdated due to post restrictions stopping me from updating it. For newer runes, please read the Runecraft wiki or watch Ctri's videos on his youtube channel (linked at the top of the post).

    RUNECRAFT ADMINISTRATION (disabled-runes.txt, etc)

    The Future
    Between 2.0 and 3.0 will be many small releases with new runes and bug fixes. Enough runes will be released during this phase that 3.0 will be plausible.

    3.0 will be the first version with the (optional) Magic School system. Players will start with only the basics and will have to complete rituals to climb the ranks of magic, unlocking new schools along the way and eventually mastering the School of Aether. There might even be a few very well hidden schools made for major clans or very specific gameplay types. Shortly afterward there will be an Affinity system, where players can perform a ritual to become more apt at certain schools of magic. Donators will have access to their own rune and affinity from the beginning of the game, while other players will have to work to acquire these same abilities.

    what's the lore behind initiation and the rituals. I'm sure you have a few things in mind (since it seems like the runes themselves have a kind of backstory), but now I'm so curious.
    And I love lore >.>

    That's a good question, I'm not really sure myself. I kind of make it up as I go along, but I do have this intangible idea in my head of what "fits" and I'm not entirely sure how it got there nor how to describe it. A while back someone wrote... well, it was basically fan fiction... about runecraft and had a creation story about how the god Notch created the world, and the god "Llamus" created the aether. Personally, I'd prefer to keep myself out of the lore entirely.

    *30 minutes later*
    k, I wrote some lore :3
    In ancient times, before the nether opened and before there was snow upon the earth, there lived a group of nomads, who travelled the earth and built monuments everywhere they went. One day, after having worked all night to finish a monument, they sat and stared at the sunrise, wondering if anyone will remember them, if there are even others to see the great monuments they have built. Suddenly, someone screamed-- and the wretched SSSSSSound of a creeper disturbed the mood-- the fowl creature burst at the seams and a powerful force was unleashed directly adjacent to their newly completed tower... the tower, being very tall and hollow, began to sag. The wounded nomads looked up in horror as the reminder of their existence toppled over like sugarcane.

    Quite upset, they resolved to never allow such a thing again, and quickly devised various methods of protection against this force. Obsidian? Too difficult. Shorter towers? Certainly not! They settled upon an improved building method with cross-beams every few levels to keep the structure sturdy, and arms that extend outwards towards the ground for anchorage. As they laid the final brick, they heard the faintest whisper. It was nothing like what they had heard before, it was not a man, it was not a creeper, and it was not a daydream. Surprised, they looked around, but nothing was there.

    They proceeded to place the final brick as they had intended. Then something very odd happened. The top shape, with the circle and the crossbeam, began to glow-- they heard another whisper, and somehow, unexplainably, the whisper sounded "green," as if a color can be heard, and though the words were not in their language, they understood. Apparently the shape had a significance beyond their understanding-- the power to serve as the end of a magical tunnel. They had inadvertently created a waypoint. Both intrigued and frightened, they wondered if there were more shapes like this one-- and the whisper gave them a sense that someone else was out there. They gathered plenty of building materials, and proceeded to try out hundreds of shapes in hopes of finding another "brickword" as they called them.

    Day after day went by, and periodically they heard the whispers, but they were confusing, and they always sounded "red." One day, they built two sets of parallel lines each set perpendicular to the other, and filled the edges with glass. They didn't expect to find anything, but runewizards of today looking back will know that they built a teleporter. As one of the friends walks by, he tripped and fell into the center of the shape, and then, he wasn't there! Terrified, the one who built this shape stepped in after him-- and he once again heard the whispers, but this time they were once again "green"-- they said "Your link has been established." Suddenly they found themselves atop that tower, where the first whisper was heard.

    Over time, they came to understand this phenomenon as a "rune." The whispers became more and more clear, to the point when they could almost see them as well as hear them. The source of the whispers identified itself as the Aether, the essense of magic. It is alive, but it is not a person, nor is it a beast. It is a powerful force, with a strong will, but no particular intentions.

    The source of the Aether is yet unknown, but the runewizards of today know it as our friend. However, we can only communicate with it through shapes on the ground, and every now and then, a new rune is discovered. Were they always there? Is the Aether changing? We cannot know unless it is revealed. We know today that these early nomads were fortunate in that they were born with the ability to use these runes.

    There are many of us today who haven't the power in us to comprehend the whispers, to the extent that we do not hear them at all. These people are not without hope, however, for there exists a ritual-- a special rune, with the power to grant the ear of the aether to anyone who touches it. Once this power is granted, it cannot be taken away, but the aether heeds the commands of the privileged, and if the guild wills it, any user of magic may be denied any further acceptance from the Aether. Though they can hear the whispers, and though they can build the runes, their commands remain unheeded.

    It is a great power that we have been given, the power to discover and to manipulate the forces unseen, and we owe it all not only to the Aether, and to wherever it came from, but also to those nomads who mistakenly built a stack of waypoints in order to keep their monument from falling apart. They have indeed been remembered, but not for their great buildings-- instead they are remembered for the discovery of a field wholly unlike anything else in this world. Wherever they are, every runewizard thanks them.

    Hope that satisfies your curiosity-- I had that kind of story in my head for a while now but I never fleshed it out until now.

    um i think the idea is rather ridiculous. You're chasing a dude and you have him cornered on a cliff, then he pulls out his hang glider and flies away. A little... Strange. Plus people would just pillar to the sky and glide around.

    Explain how this is not legitimate gameplay and I might agree with you.
