You'll definitely need a portfolio for this, but it sounds like you're already getting one ready. You'll probably have to go a good bit out of your way to get anyone to request you a pack, though. Most of the people coming into Texture Discussion to ask for a pack can hardly type a two letter word correctly.
So they don't ask for id, yeah, but the rule is there. So the assumption is that everyone here is at least 13, it not older. It's not so much the case with texture packs, but at least in the modding forum I just assume everyone there is at least twenty years old since modding requires having to know Java.
Also, check the wiki page. Under colour: Black. Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, though the color varies depending on the presence of impurities. Iron and magnesium typically give the obsidian a dark brown to black color. black glass. And if you meant the white flecks found within it, perhaps using one of the many light greys? I'd love to see your photo of when you were up and close to obsidian.
