After reading all of that you've pretty much just talked about everything you can do with horses, but with pigs... If there's a companions mod then why does it need to be implemented into the game? It's pointless from what I've read. People use pigs for quick sources of food whilst exploring. Before horses you put a saddle on the pig and it just wandered about, until the carrot on the stick was added no one used pigs for transport because lets be realistic about this, in real life have you even seen a pig carrying a person, let alone a chest/furnace/workbench? No? Exactly! In real life the main thing pigs are used for is breeding and eating. Why should Minecraft be any different? Most of the older animals in Minecraft are needed for their own individual things. Pigs are the same. You can find pigs in almost any biome so you can get food from them, that's all you need pigs for.
Why do we need to make NPCs used for food OP? That'll just ruin the balance of the game completely.
Good idea, but NO SUPPORT.
First off, I understand the Companions mod does alot of the same as this suggestion. I mention that in the OP. Second off, don't break realism into this. In minecraft, we're in a world of blocks and fight suspiciously shaped green monsters while mining for ores. Third, cows are used for leather and meat. Sheep are used for wool, and in 1.8, meat. Chickens are for feathers, and meat. Pigs, are for ONLY meat. Each major passive animal except for the pig has a secondary drop.

There is no need to make pigs useful at all, they're food and until the "OH LOOK AT HOW FUNNY THIS PIG LOOKS WHEN I LEAD IT WITH A CARROT AND RIDE IT" update that's all they were and even then they're were still only useful for food.

That's the point of the suggestion, to make it so pigs aren't the definitive useless mob. This suggestion is in attempt to make pigs newer, and better.

so is this a hybrid of the battlepigs mod and horses?
In essence, yes.

There is a need to make pigs more useful because cows are superior to pigs in virtually every way. Cows drop the same amount of food as pigs but additionally drop leather and can be milked. Pigs can be used for transport, but horses blow them away in that department and you're probably going to have access to horses before you have access to carrots.
Anyways, my thoughts on the actual idea:
-Pigs oinking louder when a mob is near is only really useful for creepers because you would be able to hear the other mobs, making the pig redundant. Would be redundant for creepers as well if your hearing is good enough to hear their footsteps.
-The headbutt isn't terribly useful as it does pitiful damage (which is intentional) and knocks mobs away from where you want them to be; would be especially infuriating for skeletons whom would take a tiny bit of damage in exchange for a chance to shoot more arrows at you. Only really useful against creepers, but cats make for a better creeper counter.
-The portable utility blocks aren't terribly useful either. Chests would be nice if you don't have a donkey, but if you do it's not very useful since you can just use the donkey instead. Crafting tables only save you an inventory spot, but that's negated by the fact that chests give far more than one inventory slot. Furnaces have a similar problem to crafting tables but at least they have a benefit in allowing you to smelt or cook things while you travel. Somewhere else I read an (extremely, in that it's virtually the same as this) similar idea where the pig could carry an Enderchest which actually WOULD be useful since you can't pick them back up without Silk Touch.
Overall they're not terribly useful. Wolves are better at fighting regular mobs (and don't end up making things harder for you, though they do get killed very easily since they have no armor) whereas cats are a more effective counter to creepers. And, of all the portable utility blocks, only the furnace is useful; donkeys can carry chests as well as pigs and can travel much faster compared to pigs, and the crafting table only saves you an inventory space and the time it takes to dig it out of your inventory, place it, and pick it back up.
-Point taken on the oinking.
-Didn't think about making skeletons a pain with the pig's headbutt. Maybe the pig would only target skeletons if it could kill.
-Generally, I don't like bringing larger mobs like horses and donkeys into small and constricted caves, so I believe that having a mob that is roughly the size of a dog compared to the size of a horse is better overall.
-Completely forgot about the enderchest, thanks for bringing that up.
-I would like to think of choosing between powerful and relentless attacks (dogs,) creeper defense (cats,) mobility (horses/donkeys/mules,) and a jack of all trades (pigs.)
In fact, what's stopping you from having a group of animals, made up of pigs, dogs and cats to protect you as you do your own thing?
This suggestion was made to add something I think would be cool into Minecraft, not something forced onto players. Thanks for the responses, both good and bad, as it helps make the suggestion better.
Thanks!

Understood, just pointing some stuff out to do later when bugs are fixed. Speaking of bugs...
Can't place Tablets or Bio-Fossils.
When battling Tyrannosaurus it never lies down, meaning it is impossible to tame.
Sometimes eggs will just NOT grow, even in the proper conditions.
Riding a Plesiosaur crashes Minecraft.

Here to address issues with accuracy, if possible please change model.
Tyrannosaurus: FULL RETROSAUR ALERT! Tail dragging? Seriously? That;s like, early/mid 1900s. Also, eyes are way to big, head is majorly off. 3 claws, not 2 on the lower limbs. Also, major lake of feathers. And it is called Tyrannosaurus rex (or T. rex or Tyrannosaurus) Here are some good references:

More coming soon.

Umm, they aren't lizards. They are fully feathered dinosaurs. And it isn't just a "Raptor" its a group of different dinosaurs called dromeosaurs like Dromeosaurus, Velociraptor, Utahraptor and Deinochynus. Some lived in deserts, plains, jungles, MANY habitats. Some even lived in the arctic tundra.

You obviously have no idea who you are talking too. ALL Oviraptorids and actually most theropod dinosaurs were feathered. Oviraptorids had quite elaborate feathers quite like a peacock. Not sure what you mean by "early oviraptor". And thats why I said the largest WE KNOW OF.
