These creatures are most likely hostile (pretty obvious) and that they can interact with the environment. Whether it is to place or remove blocks, they still make me think of "hostile griefer bots."
Also, I don't think those things are not DIRECTLY hostile, and that they just mess up a portion of the world (targeting maybe common building materials). The reason why I think this is because none of the creatures seem to stare at the character playing (unless he/she is using noclip of something).
Notch is probably one of the only people that reveals things at the right time. He just caused me and everyone else to speculate what is going to be released. - To post a comment, please login.

You have to understand SDK's point of view, because he must have a lot going on in his life. It's NOT like "Microsoft shutting down for no reason," because that is an entire company with fallback workers. This man is doing all his services for free with his own time, and something must have come up that forced him to stop. His copyright section states "This mod is provided freely and may be decompiled and modified, either with a decompiler or a bytecode editor."
This situation is not the first of its kind. Remember The Aether? Equivalent Exchange 2 is also discontinued. And what about Single Player Commands, on the verge of becoming opensource and discontinued by the original author?

Your signature goes into your signature. Please put it there using the user control panel. If you can't find it, there is a help option somewhere.
Also, this doesn't make the mod. It makes the actual Java file. To make the mod, you'll have to decompile Minecraft, add the java file, obfuscate it, then recompile it. If that's too complicated, there are much more simple mod making programs out there.

Put the WorldEdit jar into the bin, not the jar.
Also, use //hpos1 and //hpos2 if the axe doesn't work. Also use key bindings if you don't want to type it in all the time.

Take a wooden axe from the tools tab in creative, it's the same as using //wand (because typing in //wand gives you a wooden axe). Right click a block to select point 1 and left click another block to select point 2. If it still doesn't work, you have to put WorldEdit.jar into the .minecraft/bin directory, NOT the minecraft.jar

Wrong, that's not what they do. He uses MCEdit to add in equipment to zombies and such, (i.e. enchanted diamond armour). Then he used MCEdit to make the diamond armour zombies into spawner, where they will constantly spawn.
The small space with the dispensers and the armor is what is used for players. (Command blocks can't teleport mobs :P)

Actually, now that it's open source, anyone can pick it up and continue the mod.

Yeah, but you're forgetting how popular the mods Mojang used were. They probably got over 12,000 downloads with all those mod reviews.
Besides, how would the mod creators be paid? Mojang won't just be like, "I'll give you X amount if you let me use your mod." That would lead to people taking advantage of the company's money because it was their idea and their mod.
Let's just forget about money issues, because Mod API is coming very soon (1.6 possibly), and that allows mods to be installed to the game within the game itself from a possible mod-hosting server (like the skin server). That means that any mod maker can upload their mod (with proper guidelines) for the community to play.

Okay, what do you mean by "many others???" The only two mods directly added to the games were the Pistons mod by Hippoplatimus and the Smooth Lights mod.
Besides, Mojang isn't "stealing" the mod ideas, they acknowledge that they added the mods! I do agree they deserve credit, but I don't agree they should be directly payed. All the mod makers already get enough money using adf.ly
