This is really great actually. Want a brick house? No need to dig in the bottom of ponds and cook the clay. Instead you can just transfer a bunch of easily obtainable wood slabs into all the faux-brick you want.

    Yep.

Someone should make a schematic that has the automatic version.

There's no need to hack. Scroll up :wink.gif:

Just tried with sandstone, and there :0 stacks with :4. I guess the damage value is only looked at for certain block types.

    I see. Even better.

I was hoping for furnaces and jukeboxes but pistons cannot push them. If they did we would be able to duplicate discs.

Yep. Maybe with the piston changer mod by the original guy.

I DID manage to change fence gates by hacking redstone torches on top of them.

This same method should be able to be used to also change the orientation of stairs and the water level of a cauldron.

I have a question for anyone here who actually knows anything about the minecraft code.

So what we're doing here is changing the damage values of minecraft blocks. So when we move a block that doesn't use damage values to assign appearance, what happens? For example, can we give a cobblestone block a damage value of 5? And although it looks like normal cobblestone, it's still recorded as cobblestone with damage 5? If so, is there any way of using that?

Damage values only apply to tool/armor durability, correct? They have no impact on how long a block takes to break, so a higher damage value block shouldn't break quicker.

Everything can be found on the minecraft wiki Data Values page. Here.
Basically, when Notch/Jeb first added colored wool in survival they were worried that they would take up too many data values.
They got around this by making each color of wool a different damage value. This value is only saved in the same area of data as the damage for tools, but it codes for different colors. Since then this method has been used for stone bricks, leaves, slabs, silverfish blocks (I think), saplings (I think), tall grass (I think), and POSSIBLY mushroom blocks. (Somebody should test mushrooms).

Anyways, the usable blocks for this changer currently are Wool, Stone Bricks, Slabs, and probably silverfish blocks.

It's so much more than that. You can transmute between colors, not just to white. And you can transform regular stone brick into cracked/mossy, and do all kinds of other cool things.

Sponane, you should update the OP with the transmutation discovery.

Also, kinda obvious but I discovered a TNT blast that destroys the torch (but not the wool or the rest of the machine) works the same as breaking it by hand. So it is possible to create white wool without needing a person to break the torch. Water can only create the various colors. Not practical at all of course, but good to know.

I added a description of it. If you have a better one or a video I will add it.

    ok, here are some pics.
Looks like the block gets the id id of the block it moves in to.
That's why it got id 0 every time you break the torch yourself...

That's a good way to get the variations of Stone Bricks.

AND you can probably get the unused stone slab (damage value 6 or something).

Although you WOULD be limited on wool. Only up to 8? So no brown wool.

    IT WOOOOOOOORKS!

Oh, it follows the north south rules. The two blocks the torch is on need to point along the x-axis.

    Also, it works in SMP!

    EVERYONE! Build an automatic version!

...then again... just double stone slabs, yea. :dry.gif:

Hmm... surely there is a way to do higher damage values! And let's not forget... Transparent blocks!

    Higher damage values?

Anyways as far as I know it works for wool, double slabs, stone bricks, and logs.

Wow I'm going to try this out. Good job finding it but not exactly sure how it could help anything. Certainly an interesting find though

Yeah, the only real use I have found of it is being able to make stone slabs directly from cobblestone slabs.

NOTE: THIS GLITCH HAS BEEN PATCHED!
    Block Data Value Changer
    Description
Due to a neat glitch it is discovered to be possible to change the block data value in Minecraft. This affects wool, stone bricks, logs, slabs, and many other blocks. It can be used for useful things like changing the color of a block of wool or changing whether a stone brick is mossy or not.
It requires sticky pistons, a bit of redstone dust, a few redstone torches, and water.

    Premade Machines.
If it doesn't work try moving it to different coordinate areas.
"Note that it's sensitive to orientation (don't rotate it) and to chunk borders (move it a bit if it doesn't work)."-Zhul
Try not to build it in the +X & +Z direction.
