posted a message on Your First Computer's Specs
    Finally...the Commodores are coming.
My family's first computer was a Commodore 128D. Was a C-64 and C-128 in one machine. I'm sure it was entirely too expensive for what it was ever used for. I did a little bit of sprite programming on it, after reading the user manual. Mostly, we played a handful of games, which were quickly disappearing out of stores, because it was a near total failure as a home computer. That was probably around 1988 or so.

The first computer *I* bought myself was a 233mhz Pentium II with I think 32mb of ram. About a year later I upgraded the ram. A year or so later, I put in a video card...I think it was a whopping 4mb.

posted a message on Does anyone know how I would go about learning to touch type?
    Quote from Wolley74

Best sentence to type would be "the quick fox jumps over the lazy brown dog" since it contains every letter in the alphabet, its good practice

Well no, that does hit all the LETTERS, but there's no punctuation variation, potentially one capital (if you type it as a sentence), no numbers, no symbols...and typing one sentence like that will also have the negative effect of having muscle memory for that sentence. There is a bit more to the mechanics of typing than just memorizing hitting each letter of the alphabet in one sentence.

Yes, it would help for learning the basics so you aren't looking down at the keyboard to type words. But when I learned typing, we also learned the numbers, symbols, and punctuation. You could tell that there were groupings of words to focus on certain things, like common combinations of letters, like "ing," etc.

Finally, if you are learning to touch type, focus first on accuracy, go slow. After you have learned where all the keys are and can hit them without looking, THEN work on speeding up little by little. It's like so many other things...do it right first, then work on doing it faster.

Also...I learned the number pad in like, 4th grade. Learn it, but learn the top row, too. Don't let the number pad be a crutch for typing numbers.

Wow...what a strange school, assigning essays at 11pm the night before it's due. Who DOES that?

The truth is, you probably won't put any more effort in when you're given an extra day to turn it in, so it doesn't matter.

Am I the only one that has pity on Larry Fitzgerald, wide receiver for Arizona Cardinals (American Football)? That poor dude is a great receiver, but he plays for a team that will never amount to anything.

His team went to the Super Bowl not that long ago.

Many great players played on bad teams.

You want a cure? Weight loss and exercise. It's caused mainly by obesity, so curing that will put him well on the way to 'curing' him of it.

posted a message on Why is it morally ok to euthanize a pet to spare its suffering, but not ok to do the same for people?
    Quote from ConagherAxe

Not sure, but I think that veteranarians just don't think that the medication they'd use on humans would help the animals, if the potency didn't kill them first. Just my opinion.

Uh, no, a lot of the same medications are used on animals, and they work. Potency is not an issue, anything can be diluted.

Would you spend thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars to save your father? Yes, of course. Probably, you'd spend a hundred thousand, or more, if you could afford it. Some go into debt for decades to prolong the life of a loved one.

But we don't usually spend thousands of dollars to save a pet. Surgeries, chemotherapy, long-term care...it's all possible with pets, but we aren't willing to spend the money. We have them for maybe 10 years, depending on the type, and that's far less than the time we have with other people.

I'm not saying we SHOULD...but rather that we COULD.

Also...the medications used to euthanize pets are the same ones used to euthanize humans. Euthanize as in, lethal injection, of course. And they weren't originally intended for that, but there isn't much demand for it outside of that use now, with better ones available.

And who's to say it isn't morally ok? It isn't legally ok, but that doesn't make it morally not ok. It means we have made it law...morality isn't legislated though, it's determined by civilization. What is immoral in our civilization is not necessarily so in another.

posted a message on Video Game Genders
People that don't play a different gender in games think about it more than those that do, that I'm sure of.

I play a female character most of the time. I use a name I came up with about 16 years ago for an online game, and it's stuck as far as gaming goes.

Voice chat WOULD be a problem, but I play with mature players, that don't care if my character is female. I'm playing a game, not going on a date. What difference does it make what gender my *character* is?

posted a message on Any good free MMOs?
Depends on what you want. I played Runes of Magic when it was in beta and into release. I thought it was done quite well for a free MMO. But I got tired of the cartoon-y graphics, as what seems to be the graphics of choice in every free MMO, and so now I don't play any MMO.

What you like do to most in Minecraft:
Build my own little place, usually into a bit of the landscape, though lately I've wanted to build a castle. I'm just getting tired of the 'survival' servers having spawned-in iron/gold/diamond blocks to build impressive structures that nobody would ever be able to gather the material for otherwise. I assume with a name like "Terra Nova" that it's more 'survival' than 'creative.'

posted a message on What are some things to know before buying first car?
    Quote from xhayatox

What are some key things to remember before purchasing your first car? Like, does it matter how much mileage a car has? Does it matter if it's used? What are certain things you should look for? Also, is it true that car insurance costs over $300 a month? If so, that's unbelievably expensive...

Ok, specific to the car, I'll do my best to advise you on what to look for.

First of all, don't buy more than you can afford. Chances are you cannot afford a new car, or you wouldn't be asking. So get an idea of how much you can set aside for your car.

Tires. Tires are one of those things that are easily overlooked. They need to have a reasonable amount of tread, and all the sizes must be the same. At MINIMUM the front 2 need to match size, and the back 2 need to match size. Read up some, it's easy to understand. Buying a car with bad tires (if it pulls to one side, it could be alignment, but it could also be tires...and if it's been out of alignment long, the tires will be messed up, too.) may add another $500 or more to the price of the car.

Set some aside for tax/tag/title fees. A tag here runs around $200, tax is 7% here, and title fee is around $40.

Research the model (exact year, and trim level, if possible) for problems. Some cars have a bad history of various problems, and while you can't always avoid it, go into looking over the prospective car forewarned.

The MOST IMPORTANT element of any used car though is how the previous owner treated the car. That's easily hidden with a detailing, but you just have to do your best to judge the person and the car. Mileage doesn't mean nearly as much as some people believe. Condition of the car, especially the engine and transmission, are the most important thing, and you can't judge that by mileage alone. Over 200,000 miles though, and I'd say you're taking a risk.

Every used car has problems. I've never had one that is perfect. If the owner tells you it has NO problems, then either it's fairly new, and shouldn't have any, or they're LYING. Otherwise, they wouldn't sell it.

Most importantly, be informed. Don't go look at a car without any information beforehand. And ALWAYS take it for a test drive. I'm ok with the owner doing most of the driving, but you (or your father/ trusted individual) needs to also drive it some, to be sure they aren't covering up some problem. Hard shifting in an automatic, a slipping clutch in a manual, etc. A car's owner will compensate for problems naturally, and to unload their problem into your hands.

After getting my graduation gift, a '82 Subaru wagon (in '96) that I paid $300 of the $800 it cost, my first Christmas gift was new tires, and a set of jumper cables. I still have them, still keep them in my trunk. And I use them fairly frequently, either for myself on my own cars, or helping others. Get some, learn to use them.
