ON TOPIC: Most of you are just copying from Wikipedia, or pretending you have some form of degree or education in mathematics. Why don't we all just agree that dividing by zero is equal to or less than the amount of licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Roll Pop.
That'd be just fine for 4 people max, you could probably even get away with 512MB so long as you aren't using many/any plugins/addons. I'd say go with 768M to be safe.

Yeah, I've got a practically constant flow of spawning squids in a gravel pond near my base.
It's only one-block deep, but they still spawn like mad. I often beach the squids- they're so helpless when they're on land.
Mojang as a whole is remarkably unprofessional. The wiki is run by arrogant 16 year olds with poor social skills. The forums here are dominated by easily offended 12 year olds with poor social skills. It's like Lord of the Flies in here. The official IRC channel? Dominated by the same self-important people.
Tweeting about getting drunk at the office Christmas Party? Twittering about playing Civ 5 instead of working on bugfixes for the game that bought you Civ 5? Shortsighted, unprofessional, poorly thought out.
One vacation after another and letting your recently hired code lackey release all the useful information regarding new updates? Priceless. I don't know how much Notch really cares about the game any more. If his behavior is any indication, he should hand the creative and technical reins to his employees and go on more vacations.
As for Minecraft itself, I like the game. It's the best set of LEGOs ever devised by man. But I want bugfixes, not capes. Add some of the best mods while you're at it, Mojang, but please focus on making the game playable.
It's frustrating that a game so promising is stagnating like this.

No. look how games like Portal handle stuff? It limits the re-rendering to a fixed amount. MC can do the same. Also, it could maybe apply only to a certain graphics setting? This is quite possible.
And considering Minecraft uses chunks, this would be easily achievable.
