Nothing stopping them using blocks to go over top and back the way they came.
Its quite a long ways away...If I really wanted to keep anyone from getting back into the spawn room I could do 1 of 3 things...

1) make a glass roof and a redstone clock that would constantly replace it if broken.
2) use a redstone clock that would keep players out by using a /tp command when someone reaches the top of the spawn room.
3) use some command blocks to remove the spawn room entirely when someone hits the Start button. (although it could create some major lag on older computers)

I really think that these options weren't really needed as the spawn room is quite far away. And the materials in the room aren't really essential for survival.

I won't remove the spawn room, but if any of you really think I should do one of these 3 options to keep players from getting back to the spawn room...But honestly going back to the spawn room just to raid the materials is like playing an adventure map and breaking blocks when told not to...The spawn room was merely to fix the issues with "spawn protection" (which prevents mobs from spawning within a certain radius of the world spawn), and to keep players from spawning on the ocean floor if you wanted to play the map with friends!

Personally, i do not like the spawning room as it can be looted for materials. From what I see of it (just the picture) all they need is a wooden pickaxe.
Well unless you cheat, you can't get a wooden pickaxe within the spawning room and here is a little secret...
Even if you loot the place...such as taking the wool or lighting...when you hit the button to start surviving on the island...It will wipe your inventory before you are given your bed.

No I spawned straight onto the Island. I didn't even realise till after that there was even a spawn room.
Hm, I may have to re-upload the map so Players actually do spawn in the spawning room...thx for pointing that out!

EDIT: I have re-uploaded the map, please let me know if you spawn in the spawning room now...

Ok, I watched the first part of your video, and one thing came to mind...Did you already spawn in the "spawning room" and just not record it?

Hey ProfessorRook, Good job on your progress so far, but could you put your pics in a spoiler tag so your post isn't so huge!

Quote from MrPuffer321

It's great so far, but I had a problem when starting that I think I might have again: One of the villagers was stupid enough to walk off the island into the water, and then managed to sink and get stuck under the island, and drown, so I had to get a second copy of the map. Not really a problem that can be fixed, but annoying nonetheless. But other then that, I've really enjoyed the map! It's quite fun, as I enjoyed Skyblock a lot,
ProfessorRook pretty much summed it up there, as keeping those 2 villagers alive can be a challenge by itself.

Ah, that makes sense. I presume the spawning room is sufficiently far away from the island? Or is it super far up in the sky?
It's quite far from the island...If anyone finds that I didn't place it far enough away...I can move it...Its at least 2-3 hundred blocks away, diagonally.

Nice to see someone continue the work, nice job.

I haven't downloaded the map yet, so I'm not sure what you mean by a "spawning room", and how it would fix mob spawning problems. What is that?

It is a room that you will spawn in when you start the map. Minecraft has a spawn protection thing that prevents mobs from spawning withing like 16-24 blocks from the World spawn location, so I put that location in the "spawn room".

Also, lets say two people want to play the map together, I've seen instances where 1 person would spawn on the island and the other would be on the ocean floor. The "spawn room" will fix this problem.

Its also good for people that like to make an LP, they can take their time and make their introduction, without wasting valuable time on the island. So when you start the map, you will be in a large room with 2 buttons, 1 button will display a little Introduction in the chat window. The other button will teleport every player onto the island, give each player a bed, and set the time to evening, (so everyone can set their spawn.) I know you only need 1 bed to set spawn, but I know some people like to skip night time, and on a minimalist survival map, that can be quite useful. If you have any more questions about how I set up this new version of Oceanblock 5.0...feel free to ask!

EDIT: I updated the OP to include a pic of the spawn room.

I started playing this one, and noticed a couple of potential problems.

1 - the mushroom and jungle biomes are chopped up - they were more or less rounded 12x12 squares, but they are shortened in one direction.

2 - the taiga biome in 1.7 is not cold. The biome needs to be changed to snowy taiga, or we won't get any snow/ice in that biome, which means no snow golems.

well...

1 - no idea where you think its not circular, as in my testing it was just fine, had some trouble with the taiga and swamp as they were outside the region, but the jungle and mushroom biomes should be rounded somewhat, but heck this is Minecraft! World of blocks! I simply moved the biomes out a little more so I'd have room for the Flower Forest Biome. I didn't want the biomes touching so people could have room to build stuff in between.

2 - The purpose of the biome was simply to get wolves to spawn. In the old Taiga, you didn't have a choice in the elevation for snow and ice...I just thought with the new taiga, you would have to work a little harder to make snow golems and get snow. If more people think I should change it to the cold Taiga, I'll consider it, but until then, Its WI...(Working as Intended)

That sure was fast, good job, I'll give it a try right away. Not that much new though, seems more like 4.2 :P
May not seem like much, but there was actually quite a bit done to the map for the update, enough to warrant a 5.0 if not also being from a different creator, myself rather then 5thHorseman.

Thank you, it took me quite a bit of testing to get to work the way I wanted it to. In all honesty, this is my first time taking a custom map and updating it for the latest version of MC...

If I can find the time, I might try to do a Let's Play...

I've been thinking about posting my version of Oceanblock here as I am not sure it actually warrants a new thread as it is just an updated version of an ongoing map.

Should I start a new thread or continue it here?
I've already updated the map to 1.7 you can check it out here.

Hey 5thHorseman, I actually did manage to update Oceanblock to 1.7....and I named it OceanBlock 5.0! You can find my thread here! (As per your request for me to start my own thread.) Look at it and see if you like it, and feedback would be greatly appreciated!

OceanBlock 5.0!

(Original concept created by the great 5thHorseman! Link to original thread found here.)

No lava.

No stone.

Just you, some trees, and a couple friends.

Skyblock is a wonderful map, but this is NOT Skyblock, and is nothing like it. Play it for 20 minutes and you'll see.

Due to 5thHorseman ceasing all further development of this amazing map, I decided to take it upon myself to take over for him and try to keep this updated as best I can. (And most of this post will be copied and pasted from 5thHorseman's original forum topic which I linked above.)

The 5.0 release is updated for 1.7.x
The additions to the map include:
• Updated Nether to increase Zombie Pigman spawning...(everything outside the bedrock "box" have been removed and replaced with air)
• Added some more Lapis ore to ease the burden of dying glass and clay.
• Added a new biome "Flower Forest" to get the new flowers.
• To prevent ruining the beautiful look and shape of the island, Acacia and Dark Oak Saplings have been added to the "starter" chest.
• Added a spawning room to fix any mob spawning issues in the overworld, and any multiplayer spawning issues...(although this map was originally made for single player, but go ahead and invite some friends and they shouldn't spawn on the ocean floor anymore...I hope!)
Download Link:

Adfly (to support my hard work): OceanBlock 5.0

Direct Link: OceanBlock 5.0

Multiplayer server! (Thanks to BritishCommando2 for setting up and running this):
URL: oceanblock.us
Just paste that into Minecraft and head on over!
Alternate urls: oceanblock.me oceanblock.co oceanblock.in oceanblock.org
Once connected hit T, then type /server Oceanblock
Then read all the signs for what to do next!

Rules:

• Do not kill yourself in ANY way for ANY purpose.
• NO mods/hacks/cheats that give you an advantage. (Optifine is fine, but TMI is not)
• Play on at least easy difficulty.
• Have FUN!
Notes:

• You will be given a bed, and when you start it should be night. Sleep in the bed to set your spawn point, and sleep in it whenever you move it. This will keep you from spawning back in the original "introduction room".
• When you start, there is no lava. There is no stone. You'll be working with wood until you can get iron tools, either from a mob trap or from Iron Golems, or from trading with villagers.
• Most of the stuff you'll work with in on the little block of dirt, sand, and a few other resources that you spawn on. There are some goodies available if you search a bit, but don't look too far! *EVERYTHING* unique is within 16 horizontal meters of the island.
• There are 6 biomes in the world. Most of the world is a plains biome, but there is also a snow, a jungle, a swamp, a mushroom biome, and a flower forest. Like everything else of interest, they're all within 16 meters of the Island. They're also all placed symmetrically so if you can find one, you should be able to find the others.
• There is an emergency cache on the non-hardcore version of this map. It's not exactly hidden but it's out of the way. It has a few critical resources that you start with, but could lose. For the ultimate challenge, try to do EVERYTHING below without ever opening that cache. If you don't like it but don't want to use its contents, feel free to destroy it and throw it and its contents into the sea or onto your cactus.
• There is coal on this map. And diamonds. And obsidian. And all of the Nether blocks. And Nether Wart. Yes, you can get it all. And yes, you'll need it all.

FAQ:

How do I get cobblestone? Where's the Lava?
Until you get to the Nether, there IS NONE. This is not Skyblock, no matter how similar it appears on the surface.
Anything you can do with cobblestone, you can do with wood, except maybe holding lava.
What about Iron?
Iron is a renewable resource, and getting it is one of your goals. If you do the challenges in order you'll get iron in no time.
What about Whithers? I bet you didn't think about those.
You're right, I could have accounted for Withers but I didn't.
Your map is dumb and you're dumb and how can you mine diamond without iron you dummy.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but you'll need iron to mine diamonds.

thats a math joke hes pulling that everyone keeps taking seriously. Also the update number just reset upon release (this was from back before it updated to release. there was no 2.0, just 1.0 release. mathematically it is impossible for a 1.ten, since 1.10 literally is 1.1. It would be extremely confusing to everyone if he did it that way, unless they changed it to literally say 1.ten.
It could actually just get to 1.9.1 and just climb from there. turning into 1.9.9.x.x ect.
well there are games and other programs with versions higher then .9, they just skip 10 and do something like version 1.12.5 or something like that since version numbers don't technically have to follow proper math rules! For example, I have a program that says version 3.11.37.1212! but that is a funny joke that is not really apparent if you aren't knowledgeable in these sort of things.

But aside from that I hope everyone has had a wonderful Thanksgiving (to those that celebrate it, for everyone else...have had a nice day...hehe) and umm...waiting patiently for CP to be updated to 1.7 no big rush or anything.

I would try to make an updated OceanBlock but I don't have the necessary skills or know how. I could try in a creative world, maybe.
No worries, as I plan to update the map myself...I have the know how, and pretty much know exactly what I am going to do to update it to 1.7. So once I get everything settled in RL, I should have time soon to work on it...
