The community isn't a monolithic entity. Minecraft is huge, and it's composed of many different people. It seems more likely to me that you saw a group of people clamoring for a combat update, then when the combat update was announced, you saw a different group of people upset about it.
The reality is, not everyone agrees about which area the developers should focus on improving. And since there's a finite amount of time and resources that can be devoted to updating Minecraft, certain groups will be happy with Mojang's announcements and other groups will be upset, but rarely will every group have the same reaction.
I was just wondering what everyone thought about /home and /spawn commands, particularly on a vanilla server where there aren't any game-changing mods.
Do you like having those abilities? Do you think they're nice to have but should be on a timer (for example, 30 minutes)? Or do you think they have no place on a vanilla server and that it'd be better for people to travel to/from spawn and their house?
For those who don't know, /spawn teleports the player to spawn, and with /sethome you can set where your home is and then use /home to teleport to it.

Activity has been dropping for a while, and so, I'm just going to let it expire. To be honest, I don't think I'm able to devote enough time to it. You really need to spend a lot of time playing Minecraft if you're going to run a server well, and while I certainly have time for Minecraft in my life, I don't think I have quite enough time to manage a server.

Why did you choose this server over the others?: Well, I'm still trying to find a server to call my home. This one looks pretty neat, especially because I really prefer vanilla servers over heavily modded ones. What skills in game or personally can you bring to this server?: I'm a bit of a transportation nerd. I like designing roads and rails systems. To be honest, I'm not very good at building. I would rather gather materials and support other players as best as I can.
Who is your favorite Hermitcrafter / Minecracker (Don't those names just sound weird :P): Well, I haven't followed Mindcrack in a long time, but when I did, I liked the BdoubleO / GennyB pair.
Anything else you would like to add such as, recommendations, ideas, etc.?: Well, personally, I think some plugins like Essentials and CoreProtect are okay to add since they don't really alter the game mechanics. Otherwise, I really do love playing on a mostly vanilla server, without creative mode either. It sounds like it's off to a good start though.
i understand why you would like a semi-vanilla server. actually what i would do is either set up a bungeecord server or use multiverse and have different worlds. maybe that could be one of them. but the multiple world thing wouldn't be until i could afford a good amount of ram (to support all the lag) and what i am trying to do is think of something that attracts people to join and stay and i am having trouble doing so. other then that the only other really difficult thing about running a server is choosing who to trust and not to trust.

What I mean is, if you have 10 active players and 3 different worlds, that's only ~3 people playing on a world at a time (assuming they're all equally popular) instead of 10 people playing on one world. It could be the difference between a good server and a great server.
And, well, about trust... it's definitely nerve-wracking. I ran a realm/server up until recently, and I was so afraid of griefing, but we had no major problems with griefing at all! And all I did was put up a whitelist, look for mature people, and check out their forum posts and ban history before letting them on. Maybe I just got lucky though, haha.

My humble thoughts on your questions...
Personally, I think there definitely should be a white list. On a vanilla server, you can't prevent griefing 100%, but I think you can prevent a lot of would-be griefers by making a white list and checking out the people who apply to be on that white list (looking through forum posts, seeing if they're on any ban lists, etc.)
And for plugins, I would just put Essentials, CoreProtect, and maybe GroupManager if you want more than just ops and regular players. I think plugins like Lockette and WorldGuard ruin the vanilla feel too much, but that's just my own opinion, and I know some would disagree with me on that.
Well, I might be different from a lot of other players, but I don't like many plugins or mods on a server. I've always preferred semi-vanilla servers with no game-altering plugins (just plugins like Essentials, CoreProtect, etc). To me, the fun is that it's like playing vanilla Minecraft... with other people. I try to stay away from servers with plugins like iConomy and mcMMO.
I also prefer it if everyone stays in survival mode. I don't like seeing creative builds all over the server. Again, I'm probably in the minority here, but I can't help but feel that way.
And I think if you're a fair admin and you choose mature, decent people to be your staff, you shouldn't have any problems with people feeling like they're not as valued as staff members are.
What are some of your favorite things to do in Minecraft?: I love to gather resources and i love to use automatic ways to farm pretty much everything in the game. I also like to kill bats. Their squeak is annoying.
