I made the room in mcedit but it's legit ?

naw, your idea is actually a great one, impressed by your map, but i would have gave you a :Diamond: if you did the room by hands :wink.gif:

Haha yeah, honestly I've just been on a mission to get a high number of items, it's just my particular Minecraft hobby. As well, the new design will hopefully give someone a good idea to make the better practical mobtrap. I'd do a legit build but I like designing more and always improving what I can, rather than just doing something without hacks that take longer.

I haven't downloaded it (I might), but from the sounds of it, it's real.

I'm very curious as to how this was designed. From what I collected, it's many lava traps, rather than 1.
Can you please post the designs? Thanks. :biggrin.gif:

The most complicated part is actually the series of canals bringing the items to the collection point. As for the rest, it is extremely simple. There are many rooms, each with multiple canals that are three blocks apart. Each canal is two wide, and leads to a small drop into another canal, and then into a grinder. The grinder is also very simple. It is just a lava blade perpendicular to the canal.

There is a little more to it than that, but as far as I can tell all other features are merely there for ease of building, and not important to the overall function of the trap. Sinstrite may need to correct me on that, however.

Sinstrite, are the rooms only there to make duplication with MCEdit simpler? It seems as if there should be a good way to eliminate the rooms entirely, and therefore gain a little more spawning area, without disrupting the ability to move mobs through quickly.

The reason there's rooms and it's not open is because I watched the mobs when they spawned, and some would walk back and forth for a bit before falling. I did tests without the rooms and usually got around 15.2k - 15.8k always going up and down. I decided if I could make a limit for the area mobs could go then they'd fall faster, so I added the mini rooms in both large compartments. After that is when I started getting 17k+ items so I figured something about it was right. If anyone can improve it please do, I'd love to see a 20k+/hr trap. :Diamond:

I'm working on breaking it down into layers and parts for screenshots, and making a video showing how to build it from smallest version to the large one which is in the savefile. I'll post them when I'm finished (hopefully sometime tonight or tomm) and bump the thread for you if needed.

Given your sign placement, the lava could be 2 blocks long instead of 4.

That would save some room for cloning, hopefully someone will do that when using the design to build a smaller/larger one. I might try to remake the whole thing soon with the 4>2 length. I'd just been so fixated on finding how to get the mobs to spawn>walk>die as fast as I could I overlooked that. Awesome find though.

After editing in a few diamond tools and torches, as well as taking advantage of some of the blocks laying around, I believe I see the general ideas behind this trap.

Overall it seems as if the spawning area to non-spawning area ratio is considerably smaller than many mob traps out there. However, the spawning area is also completely horizontal, which seems to be ideal now that the chunk 0 bug has been fixed. Mobs also are killed much faster than in most other traps, which allows spawn rates to be considerably higher than many other traps (assuming both are consistently at the spawn limit).

Interesting ideas, and obviously effective. I wonder how feasible it is to use the same concepts when building one without hacks. I'm fairly certain that this trap can only be scaled down to a certain point effectively. Once the trap is on a scale such that the mob limit is not consistently at the cap within the trap, I suspect the low spawn to non-spawning area ratio will make this trap significantly less effective than those commonly seen.

Yeah I've had the same thoughts, and I honestly think that you need to have it built as low as possible on the map, and you need to light all of the caves within around 80-100 blocks around you, above you. If you can do that then a smaller version should give a good amount still, although as you said it'll be significantly less, seeing as how I did everything possible just to take full advantage of spawn rules.

I was wondering too if you built it as high as possible though, then there would be less area below you to cover as far as lighting goes, even more if it's built on a smaller scale over an ocean.

I hope someone can take the idea behind it though and successfully build something that works nice and can be done fairly easy, legit.

What material did you find to have the best spawn rates?

As far as where the mobs spawn? Anything that you'd naturally find underground I just guessed would work. I used stone for the floors with some Iron blocks and cobblestone for the walls. Stone or Iron for the ceiling, anything that light wouldn't 'pass through' pretty much works. As far as items, arrows and bones are killing me, sulfur has a nice income though. The way the lava traps work though is nice in my own opinion because it seems to burn some silk that spiders drop when they die, and I don't want much silk anyways (in a real, legit gameworld - which this will never be in lulz).

I switched a few things along the walkway out with some lightstone and glass, hopefully that fixes it, if not please let me know, thanks for the feedback.

ColorWars - yeah sometimes they still spawn around places without glass, at one point they never did though so I figured I'd finally got the light high enough but I'll probably top off everything with lightstone and glass and reupload the save. (I'll be adding a video when I'm able, showing everything as far as schematics and such.)

It took around 2 days off and on to build with MCEdit, but the actual testing and everything took somewhere around just under a weeks time.

Normal. I tried Easy and Hard just to make sure, but it's all the same when it comes to lava.

im not sure as how to make a 2x2 stream of 4 directions be moving (not still), is it like the 2x1?
as for the more detailed map, i understand more of it now, thanks.
though the lining up of the bottom half and top is a little fuzzy, i get a good idea.
great design. though too add for practicality, caves need to be lit up, etc, to force the spawns into it.
and to not have the problem I am having where nothing spawns, not even passive farm animals :sad.gif:
    :smile.gif:

Pretty much as you see the arrows, the top and bottom stream floors flow opposite in a cross pattern. Use signs to stop the waterflow, where it meets (should be the hold that drops to the lavablade chamber). If you wonder around the map on peaceful you'll see the actual mechanics that work the waterflow floors.

You're totally right, it's low in practicality, but it's still possible given enough time and resources. Another reason I think it's better than a tower is because it can be made not far below ground, and be hidden below sea-level. I think that if it was built in a deep part of the sea, and you dig around and below it, then that should stop most of the mobs from spawning. It would take awhile to measure out the places that need to be lit though, but then again - you can take the measurements for the mobtrap and just dig it out, I'd say it would take a week of digging, but the resources you get from digging the hole would greatly help supply the build itself. Just throwing ideas out there. Honestly, I think it'll do better once someone finds a way to simplify it and make it smaller.

Why: Since Beta, the mobtraps have decreased production rates highly. A few traps that would give anywhere from 7k to 10k now give 1.3k - 2.5k at most.

Really? 2.5k items an hour is not sufficient?

I believe your true intentions for this thing was to show off how many mob drops you could get, not fulfill any needs brought on by a shortage of spawns.

Ill give you credit for making an awesome mob tower but lets be honest here, there is no practical application for this thing in any minecraft world.

As I said in the original post, this is a hobby to myself and other people. This wasn't designed to be an ultimate trap or anything that everyone needs to have, I just wanted to present the design and prototype and see if someone can take the concept of it and evolve it into something better. All of the things that we say make it nonpractical, that's what I want to see people overcome =]

I suggest downloading InvEdit and MCEdit, along with the world save. You learn best by breaking it apart first-hand and seeing how everything works.

Hope this helps, I'll work on making a video for a proper tutorial.

The first image is one section that can be repeated over and over. It's built by a cross of waterflow, the + in the middle, and the outside sections are 8x8 in measurement which can be repeated into the cross to make the section.

You build the cross, then a corner that fits in. You repeat that corner 4 times, and you have a section. You can then repeat the sections to make the actual size of the trap you'd like.

It is time consuming to get the kinks worked out, but it's actually simple once you know how a trap works and what you're doing because everything is an 8x8 16x16 repeat of itself. Once I had an actual 'plan' for this, I probably did it in 6 hours with MCEdit and a good little % of that was hand grinded as well. It can be scaled down also, as long as each individual trap has area around it to have mobs spawn and stay locked inside. As far as multiplayer servers go, I have no clue how it would work with multiple people around. It's more of a "hey if you like this idea, steal it and make it better" kinda thing, because I love seeing other people make insane traps.
