posted a message on Allocating more RAM to new 1.6.1/1.6.2 update
    Quote from MechJunky

What really irks me is when I try to combine super shaders with 216x216 texturepacks. I know my computer can handle it, but in task manager the memory is staying at 30% consumption. I have 8gb, which during this time minecraft is lagging up the butt. How would I give it more memory?

Did you try looking at your CPU and Graphics usage? EvilCreeper is right; Minecraft should never really use more than one, or in extreme circumstances, two gigs of ram.

Shaders are usually a graphics card thing, so your graphics card might not be able to handle the shaders very well.

posted a message on Thoughts on new ocean generation?
Personally, although this change doesn't bother me too much, I did somewhat enjoy larger, more expansive oceans. I mean, yes, larger oceans =/= fun oceans. But sometimes, games aren't just about the "fun" or "things to do" part of the game. Tedious parts make games as well.

Take Papers, please. It's tedious. It's repetitive. It's stressful. How can that game ever be fun or rewarding? But it is. People love that game.

I almost feel the same about minecraft oceans, just in a different way. Oceans gave a lot to the sense of exploration. However boring it may have been, it gave the right FEELING, if you get what I mean. It felt right. You would sit in your boat for what seemed like hours, pondering whether or not this direction was the right way to go, when you would see land. Then, you would presumebly jump for joy and get off your stale little boat and go exploring. Smaller oceans just don't give the same feeling. You know you're gonna hit land in a small amount of time. There's no searching. There's no anticipation. There's no feeling of joy when you finally set foot on land.

    Also, persuasive writing is fun.

    Quote from Barberetti

Are you telling me that in order to stop a horse in this game, you have to sit on it backwards and say "giddyup"?

Oh, and the A and D keys were used to turn the boat, not strafe it.

I was referring to the horse mechanics - like, you use A and D to strafe on a horse.

I think that they removed everything about the horse movement except the going forwards part. ...Man, even saying that sounds stupid. Okay, you guys win, I can't defend mojang anymore.

Guys guys, put down your pitchforks and torches. Yes, the boat mechanics are pretty bad, but the reason they changed it wasn't completely unreasonable. They wanted the boat movement mechanics to be the same as the horse movement mechanics so that everything would be more uniform. However, because "strafing" left and right on boats doesn't exactly make sense, they just took that out. So yeah. They didn't change it for no reason like you guys said, but I still agree that it still needs changing.

Six glasses are in a row. The first three are filled with milk and the last three are empty. By moving only one glass, how can you arrange them so that the full and the empty glasses alternate?

Take the middle full glass and pour the milk into the middle empty glass.

Here's one I just thought of off the top of my head:

I'm as light as a feather and can fly in the wind,
But my whispers can be heard when I'm with my friends.
Many creatures follow us when we take to the air,
And many return when we come back once more.

Since I just made it myself, I'm not entirely sure if there are two answers, or if it's too hard of somethin. Sorry.

posted a message on Minecraft doesn't need horses
I don't need to build this giant castle - I could just build a dirt hut. I don't need to make everything pretty. I don't need to build large redstone contraptions just to lock my front door. Minecraft doesn't need lapis, or colored wool, or chickens, or different trees. You know, minecraft doesn't need a lot of things.

Edit: God, now the word "need" sounds so stupid to me. Whenever I say it, I begin to think of "knees" and "bees."

posted a message on High ping
    Quote from Trippledot

For any and all internet issues, Call up your ISP.
Depending on their customer service, it is the best thing you can do.

300ping isn't that bad either really, its more than livable.

Its the holidays and i can only assume the lines are very busy at the moment, so a quick moment of slow internet can be expected.

For some reason, 300 ping on speedtest translates to...in minecraft.

posted a message on High ping
I've been having unusually high ping since last night. (300-400 on pingtest.net) I don't know what's causing it. No one in my house is downloading anything, I checked my security and no laptops other then our families' are connected, and the ping is still really high. It gets fixed by resetting the router... for ten seconds. Then it goes back to 300-400 ping. Our download/upload speeds are still normal - 20/.5.

Help? ISP is time warner cable.

Country of origin and background (for diversity, this will not affect your application; it’s just to get to know people better): I was born in Canada, but I currently live in america as a student.

Servers you have been on or admin-ed: I've been on tons of servers; but I haven't been admin-ed ever. Just occasionally mod-ed.

Reference (people who can vouch for what sort of person you are (not essential but it helps) : None sadly.

Friendliness and tolerance of others: I'm pretty friendly. I usually don't mind anything, even serious things. I'm a pretty big grammar nazi, though. That's what studying for the SAT gets for you.

    Age: 16

Tell me about yourself: I've played minecraft since early alpha. I consider myself a great builder, and I've participated in at least a few creative servers. I'm also pretty decent at minecraft PvP, and mainly play on MineZ and Project Ares. I love space games such as GSB, FTL, and KSP.

Why are you special?: I don't like cake. I love pie and cookies and candy and stuff, but I don't like cake. I don't know why.

posted a message on Cheats have definitely KILLED this game
On servers, the default max render distance is 10 chunks. Increased render distance does nothing.

Also, there are many ways to find and ban hackers. Look at the MineZ mod - they do it pretty well, although x-raying is useless in MineZ.

posted a message on How do you kill a person with full protection IV diamond armor?
Have your own set. Minecraft PvP in general is quite gear based.

Remember that protection IV armor is near invincibility. Make sure to bring potions and stuff, and drink them before the fight begins.

posted a message on If you were to only keep one of the five senses, which would it be?
Touch. Life without sight, hearing, tasting and smelling would be livable. I could, with enough training, still potentially navigate in the world using vibrations and such.

However, life without touch can be and is often very, very deadly. A person who can't feel can't tell if they just chopped off pieces of their tongue or severed a finger in a door loses appendages very, very fast.
