This is all wild speculation off another possible feature that has in no way been confirmed. I'd say this thread belongs more in the suggestions forum then here.

I thought you would get less xp if you massfarm it. You'll get less xp from each kill(no matter how you killed them), but this system would reset itself after some time?

No, its a parameter on the spawners. Spawners, and their mobs, have a cap that'll only let you get a certain number of levels every number of minutes. Regular mob spawned from darkness are unaffected by it.

I can foresee people spawning the Wither in a small area where he will suffocate and die a slow death. :(

It breaks blocks though so that probably won't be possible if it is even possible to summon it in an area small enough to suffocate it.

you can still hear them *splat*, you only get less xp from them.

Not those; darkroom grinders, pigmen grinders, and enderman farms xp rates will not be affected by this change.

Just because I keep see this popping up, but leather had a use before books. It was used for armor. However, when passive mob spawning changed and the leather drop didn't, leather armor became more difficult to get then iron. So people stopped making it and that discrepancy was never addressed, but it did have a use.

Pigs should not drop more pork chops but cows should drop more leather. Maybe cows should also drop 0-1 bone as well?

    --Ocram

Are you suggesting cows drop bones instead of meat, or both? If cows were to drop 1 to 3 meat, 1 to 3 leather, and possibly a bone I can't imagine anyone would bother much with pigs then.

You can still automate xp farms. Only mob spawners were nerfed. Enderman xp systems, black mob spawning rooms, etc all still work. The only difference is that instead of being able to set up an xp farm in <10mins you have to take the time to harvest the resources and build functional mob traps. If you want infinite xp you have to put some effort in to get the farm working. I am 100% happy with this change.

Except this way with dungeon spawners the person who spends less then 10 minutes setting up a grinder gets the same rate as a person who might have spent a hour or more working on a complex grinder like blaze or dual cave spider spawners. There's always infinite xp, but as far as farming xp, you've always had to put effort into making the trap if you ever wanted to get decent rates. Unfortunately that's not the case with this type of nerf.

I'd say the stuff after 'just for kicks' but moving on,

If you play the new SSP mob rendering varies from acceptable to 2 or 3 seconds behind player time. SMP is all good but for today's single player games it's atrocious.

I personally haven't had to many issues with mobs not being where they appear. I'll see mobs visually get pushed through blocks, especially if I compressing a lot of them in a small area but in open spaces mobs are almost always where I see them for me. I do have this odd issue though with villagers, they seem to frequently appear 1 block in the ground as they walk around. Sometimes I see it on passive mobs and very rarely hostile mobs, but I see it all the time in my village.

As far as fixes to these and others like the lighting glitch you mentioned, I suppose we'll see with the 1.4 update. It certainly has a lot of new content but it seems to be coming along faster the other big updates, and hopefully they are making these issues a priority as well with the update. I know for me the latest snapshot did contain a reduction of those black lighting glitches, although they are still there. "Winning" argument or not, if Mojang isn't making these issues a priority in the updates then they're not a priority and we'll have to live with them. Doesn't mean I think it'd be right for Mojang to ignore them but they do decide what the updates focus on.

You say its not a flame thread but those be some fighting words in that op. Anyways, what lag bug are you talking about, the LSOD or is this something else? From my play experience 1.3.1 has less of those lag spikes I got back in 1.2.5 and has higher fps, and the 1.4 snapshot has been giving me even higher fps then 1.3.1.

Restricting leather just to cows doesn't make sense as both pigs and sheep are sources of leather.

Well, I don't think they want you to farm one mob exclusively for all those drops. If sheep dropped wool, meat and leather, why would people collect other animals except chickens for feathers. They could drop leather, if their rates were lower then cow drops, but I think it would be simpler to leave the leather drop to cows.

I don't like Dinnerbone's logic on this one. With 1.3 and the changes already in the snapshot I'm more willing than ever to go out and fight mobs for XP. The only times I use my spawner farms is when I specifically want to use the spawner farms. I'm mostly upset because Vanilla's going to render those farms, which were fun to build, useless. This seems to completely fly in the face of one of the things that makes Minecraft Minecraft; that is finding cool ways to do stuff.

Oh well, it'll just be one more mod to install.

Same here, I love the process of automating all my farms, xp being one of them. Back in 1.2.5 I would have said spawners were the only good way of getting xp because the max level, (50), was so hard to reach, but with 1.3 not only is getting to max level, (30), easier but with all the additional methods spawner grinders are no longer necessary or even the best way to get large amounts of xp. Even worse is this type of nerf will means there'll be no point in building any more complex spawner grinders like blaze farms or dual cave spider spawners since their yields will end up exactly the same as any old zombie or skeli grinder.

    Oh ok.. Thanks for that.
Fair enough too. Do you know how long it takes to reset?

Currently 6 levels every 40 minutes, and the next snapshot will see 15 levels every 15 minutes.

Okay, so setting panic aside for a moment, if this is an intentional feature is it something modders could fix?

I'm fairly certain it is possible to be fixed by modding. There was a conversation about that on the reddit somewhere I'll see if I can find it again and see exactly what they said.

    Quote from Prettypinkdork

In a desperate bid for carrots I set up half an XP farm around a spawner (I did the part where water gathers the Zombies to a central location but didn't put in any way for the Zombies to be softened up) and just hit the Zombies with an Iron sword. No splash potions. And I only got XP from like 1 out of every 3 zombies.

Yeah, I think it was just because I was hitting them after a new 6 levels cleared up. Reached another cap, and now seeing no difference between killing zombies individually or using a splash potion.

Just testing out a zombie spawner myself, noticing a similar thing going on. Also it seems killing the zombies individually gives more exp then using a splash potion on all of them.

Edit: Checked the reddit, it is intentional. Right now spawners have a limit of 6 levels every 40 minutes but future snapshots will have different levels limits. So they may not be as nerfed as the are now, but it sounds like they will be nerfed.
