It seems much smoother to me. I never had lag spikes myself, but when I start a game, I press ESC, which causes the game to put priority on loading in the new terrain. I look in all 4 directions to pre-load the map. Lag is minimal to non-existent.
I don't see why some commenters don't like the new sounds, they are excellent as far as I'm concerned. Much improved. What I've noticed, being a dedicated HARD level survival player is that the game is harder than it was before. The enemies are more plentiful and the skeletons seem more accurate. It's possible I'm just imagining it, but it definitely seems harder than it was. I haven't died for months and I died twice today!
Can anyone tell me what the point of blocking is? ie: holding RMB to put the sword in front of you. It certainly doesn't deflect arrows... is it only a PVP feature?

If magic is added, things will have to change for those with a moral compass.
Fundamentalists will have an issue with Minecraft now because their 'moral compass' will start spinning? Please! If there's anything in this video game that could possibly give the conscience a jolt, leave it to christians to pick magic as that one thing. (Is the nether a bit too much to take?)
Avoiding anything with a tint of the occult does not make a 'moral compass' any more refined than the average bear's.
Having said that, I'm also not a fan of the magic aspect. If the direction Minecraft has taken in the past is any guide, we can both be glad to know that it won't be necessary to make potions and 'enchant' weapons etc. in order to continue enjoying the game. - To post a comment, please login.

Seed: trashcan
(or 1285169560)
^^ Player spawns on this small island. There are a few sheep and lots of trees.
^^ Careful: The flat area with the surface stone is one block thick in some places, which will collapse into a hollow spot with lava.
^^ There is an underwater access point which connects to the mine seen in the background of the next image. (spiderweb)
^^There are only a few trees on this island, which is made up of extreme hills terrain. The mountains are riddled with caves.
^^ There is a nice valley here with chickens and a few pumpkins. There are a few more pumpkins on the other side of the island (which can be seen in the previous image) The small island where the player spawns is seen here at the top left.

Sorry, I must have remembered the seed wrong. Too bad, it was catchy. The corrected seed gives you the proper world.

This first image shows the spawn (snow block near the center of the image) one ravine at center left with water falling into it, and the other ravine at the far right center.
This image shows the only five trees the island has.
This overhead view shows the location of spawn (snow block, top center of the island) and the second ravine at the top left.
The seed is: 1349630869

Using the CUI has let me recognize the problem some users are reporting. The simplest way to deal with this problem by far is to select your block, then the one next to it, then your block again. Guaranteed results.
It has other benefits, including selecting the block in front of your door which can be seen from long distances, preventing you from getting lost.
Here's a question about a possible command for SPC. Is there any facility in the game that would allow the user the ability to select a block or region and spawn a village there? It would be nice to be able to create your own village wherever you wanted to.

By the way, it's fake. Snow biome.
