But seriously, once I find a decent factions server I'm doing this

(or just singleton grass blocks above your fields) will prevent your sheep from ever running out of grass with 0 maintenance. Alternatively, having a block diagonally down on the corners of your fields (with a torch or air block on them and a block above that) also allows hidden, un-etible blocks to keep your field green.
@anybody worried about sheep and grass

I'm not sure if there is a good way to distinguish between this and when it is destroyed and drops sticks / planks.
I guess I use "break" for the later case and we could "recycled" (lol) for the former?
Here is my current design:
You use the mine cart to exit the boat. It pushes down on a button which triggers the boat recycling process. Left side is for "In" traffic-- right side for "out."

Otherwise use a dropper/hopper setup like sZ suggested.
EDIT: made my only slightly smaller version:
not sure if it is 100% reliable yet but so far seems to be size is 3x3x5.
Input is the dropper (just run a line into it or a block below it). Output is the torch or redstone dust on the left side (you could also run the redstone dust off under the block with the torch using a repeater and go out that way)
Both pistons are sticky. To save some rs dust you could also replace the RS block with a solid one, and place a torch on the side of the block under the repeater lit in the photo.
EDIT2: it seems my device requires X+1 button clicks... so put one less item in the dropper than you want

My only issue now is that when I come into the port too fast my boat breaks (I have my in and out ports across from each other in my RS world for ease of testing & my boat crashes if I don't hold backwards to slow my boat immediately after getting launched). I thought soulsand would prevent this but I have yet to get it too Riot really needs to implement wool or something as boat-safe.

Is there something special about the distance you've put the lava from the boat?
Does anyone have another way to break boats reliably?
EDIT: I just did some more messing around and this seems to be reliable (and fairly compact... can obviously be moreso)
So far its 10/10

1) not flush-- it is required to cover up the power rail. I would look into other ways to update that were flush.
2) your clock is of strange design (I'm not sure if its quite unstable, but it has to be manually set): try comparator clock?
But otherwise its very useful stuff to know There are flush versions out there I can link if ya want.
