posted a message on Island Survival v1.1 (re-release) (game)
Interesting idea, map was kinda dull though, the main problem is the enemy spawning, the island is too small for them to spawn on and be out of their minimum range of the player, and they can't spawn in water, so.

I literally built a little sand shelter day one, realized this, and just sat under my tree chilling for awhile realizing theres barely any challenge to building with limited materials when i wouldn't see an enemy unless i dig down for ore and run into a cave or something.. (ocean cave?)

Or we could go the realistic route and add a new mineral thats much harder to get then diamond and make tools out of that. I don't get why everyone usually suggests making a new tool out of existing materials that really don't fit the profile of a higher tier tool.

Only messed around for a few minutes but.

The good: Very big city, i actually could probably spend quite a few hours just exploring the massive amount of buildings i see everywhere, will probably tool around with it a bit.

The bad: Survival, honestly, i always play on hard, and in the few minutes i've been playing i already see practically no survival required, the biggest complaint is probably that, you start with a full set of diamond tools, a bow, and just way too much stuff in general, i went through a box or two i ran past and already have enough diamonds for a second set of tools, along with tons of TnT, not sure how 'difficult' you were going for, but i may as well be playing peaceful really. The reason i say peaceful is, the fire, fire honestly, is extremely easy to avoid, most of the paths go right around it or it can simply be destroyed to carve a path(very quickly with diamonds tools) and probably my biggest point was, the fire lights the -entire- city up like a giant candle, so there are practically no mob spawns, infact i went towards the pirate ship and didn't see one mob till i floated around examining the ship and saw creepers in the unlit forest area on the other side.

Fixes: I'm really not sure what your gameplay aim was, for an exploratory map, it looks pretty cool, if you want more survival i almost want to say add either more obstacles like lava everywhere, tone down the tools you can get, or even take out all the fires and make it more like a zombie apocalypse where the streets fill with monsters at night and you struggle to find torches to light things with.

Just my opinion of course, nice map overall!.

    Nice guide, mate.
I really think gold apples are ridiculous. They should be made with gold ingots and supply 5-10 by crafting.

Thanks! And I agree with you, golden apples are just a waste of gold. For some people who have no other way of using gold though, I guess golden apples would be the best thing that gold could be used for.

Possible, though more likely Golden apples are supposed to be: A. More like a decoration, you have so much gold from playing so long, make your own fancy golden apple, or B. Like a second life, fall down a giant ditch, half a heart left, skeleton archers on you, chomp that golden apple and survive!

(I think A is more likely then B though since carrying a golden apple everywhere hotkeyed is just asking for an accident)

Also apples tend to be harder to find then all that gold, for some reason.

posted a message on if you could make a new thing in minecraft what would it be
A way to mod the game without having to decompile it and feel like we're stealing someone's game, even though Notch seems to be alright with the fact so far.

(Thats directed at "we can add anything we want")

Alpha is when features are added, things are broken willy-nilly, and problems are to expected.
Beta, however, is when you go into what is known as a feature freeze. No new features are added beyond this point (or you try to avoid it if at all possible). This is when you then begin ironing out as many bugs as possible.
Afterwards, the product tends to go through a phase known as the "release candidate" cycle, which is used for last-minute bug checking.
After that, the product goes "gold" and is considered "stable", with releases as necessary to fix security vulnerabilities and any flaws found.

The idea that one can establish what alpha, beta or final means really needs to stop, folks. This is simply anecdotal evidence.

Each development team, each company, even each project defines its own rules, when it actually goes through the trouble of doing it. I've work for projects where Alpha or Beta weren't even a part of the terminology used to describe the development process. And on other cases I would have projects were the terms had a loose meaning, meant only establish general guidelines, often easily broken by post-analysis. Very rarely in fact, I worked for -- or have gained knowledge of -- project where these terms were written on stone.

As a clear example of how far one can take it, a Beta stage can come only after the Final stage. It can be common on mission critical systems (banking, insurence, ...) as software, after considered ready, is evaluated during a certain period either by simulating or be submitting it to production environments. Games are no different, since not all companies submit their products to beta testing, not all companies adopt an Alpha stage, not all companies ever even define their product as being Final (or Gold, as some call it).

Notch roughly defined what he considers Alpha and what he considers Beta. And in this definition he was pretty clear; When multiplayer shares a similar working set of features as single-player. He said nothing else. He didn't say that he wouldn't be adding new features on Beta, that he would only consider adding content during the Beta stage, or even what set of features and conditions would have him define the game as Final.

We can accept as quite possible that he indeed intends to follow a practice of adding features at this stage and only improve them on the next. The way the game has been developed suggest that. But that shouldn't serve as:

    a) A means to silence anyone wanting to criticize or even bitching about the game. He didn't ask for self-appointed attorneys, neither he needs them. He's proven more than once he can handle criticism and in a quite open and mature way. Much, much better than some of the self-appointed attorneys on this and other similar threads

:cool.gif: A means to excuse him of every mistake he makes, or bug he introduces. Anyone working in software development knows perfectly well that Alpha isn't a time to introduce bugs or to excuse existing bugs. That type of reasoning gets you on the unemployment line faster than you can say "but its in Alpha!"

    c) A reason to rabidly attack his skills or his grasp of the game or the community desires.

    d) Pretend what Notch does is how everyone does it. I can tell you for a fact, it's not. Far from it. And it doesn't take you any experience in software development to observe that not everyone launches games this early on the development process. And those who do, do it like this.

    e) A reason to silence any consumer right to produce complaints.

Honestly i think everyone reads into Alpha/Beta way too much, i'm fairly sure all Notch means with Alpha/Beta is something along the lines of.

Alpha: I'm adding new ideas as they pop in my head, things are being changed and adjusted all over, expect alot of bugs, sometimes very dangerous game breaking bugs, but i'll try to fix those quickly.

Beta: Things are more feature complete but i'll probably be adding alot more stuff, expect me to be quicker on game breaking bugs, this should be alot of smaller glitches more then anything.

Release: Should be bug free when the game is 'officially' released, but will probably get more bugs as i patch it with more ideas i come up with.

TL;DR? Get over yourself, Notch is doing great for single handedly making a game (mainly in spare time). Go make your own game, or go play something else if you don't like it. No one is forcing you to stay.

Technically, working on MC is his full-time job at this point, isn't it?

More or less, he -just- got the team together really, its like moving to a new house, takes awhile to unpack and actually get into a routine i suppose.

Fun game, could use some improvement, though i'm confident we'll get it eventually, hopefully a healthy mix of new features -and- bugfixes, see sig if you have questions.

Also threads like these are total troll bait, its essencially the same as writing a huge thread about why the game sucks to write one about why its awesome and everyone should adopt your opinion.

Only way to make it is to spawn it, i think you can craft it out of the fire block or something silly like that, not sure if an inventory editor lets you add it, it actually looks pretty goofy being semi-transparent.

Far as i know the skins only stopped working a few hours ago actually, mine have been working fine most of the day during which the update was already out, infact our server was patched with it and working fine. Not sure if its a related issue either way, hopefully they'll be working again shortly.

They wouldn't need silk or gunpowder on Peaceful, so there is no point in getting it anyway...

Spider silk's required for bows, fishing rods & paintings. (Also you can make cloth blocks w/9 silk, but why would you want to??)

The question's actually posed by a friend who hasn't bought the game yet -- she wants to roleplay an outdoorsman who hunts livestock w/bow & arrow, but doesn't want to encounter any hostile mobs.

Only real solution is to A. Find a dungeon chest, hope it has enough string for your purposes, or B. Temporarily turn the difficulty up, stuff starts spawning as soon as you change it, far as i know.

EDIT: Also you can get the cloth blocks for paintings off sheep.. in.. pretty big abundance, just give 'em a nice little smack.

Personally I have already gotten more playtime out of this game then pretty much any other 50-60 dollar game I purchased, for an alpha the game has amazing replay value, though I do hope Notch adds alot more features to round out the play experience rather then just going to beta once multiplayer is up to scratch.

This forum has alot of whining though usually, this game isn't successful because Notch is the 'Jesus' of java coding, its because he has good vision.
