I build roads out from my base/settlement to a degree, but rarely to connect to anything unless something of significance is nearby. I will build a road down to the beach or for a stretch through the desert, as it gives me the excuse to mine a lot of sand. I will mine out the sand on the route I wish to build on down to stone, fill it with cobblestone, and then pave the road with sandstone. Gets rid of a lot of cobble, gets me a ton of sand, and looks good. I just have to make sure I watch the sky as I don't need to be working into the night and have a creeper plop down on my head.

Nope. It's the sad reality of the current terrain generation.
Since 1.7(or whatever version it was) the temperature system was implemented. Which means hot biomes and cold biomes won't spawn next to each other. This often results in seeing little biome variety in the world, short of traveling several thousands of blocks. I've seen worlds that are 3,000 blocks of desert/ocean in all directions, or cases where the biome you spawn in goes on in a never ending chain for over 10,000 blocks in a particular direction. What you are describing is not out of the ordinary.
Jungles are uncommon, if you are unlucky, you may not have one anywhere even close to your location. If you don't mind spoiling the surprise of finding new biomes, use Amidst to look at your world or post your seed here.
It's not that contrasting temperature biomes won't. There is still a small chance of it actually occurring. It's just a really small chance.
And to date, I haven't had much problem finding jungle biomes.

That sounds a bit like a mob farm, only applied to the surface.
Instead of flowing water which can get a bit annoying to the ears, you can flank the trap with snow golems which will push the incoming mobs into the trap with their snowballs.

The odds improve greatly when you are trying to start a world in a snow biome. When all the wintery stuff came out, I lost count of the number of underwater temples I saw trying to find snow.
Now if you really want to be lucky, hope to spawn inside a dungeon. Once upon a time it was very possible. I wonder if it still is?

Always include a back door. You could always dig too deep and stir up something nasty. Have it accessible only by a bridge over a very deep chasm. Man the bridge with a nitwit villager to give him something to do, like telling people whether they can pass or not.

From what is shown, you managed to make a junior version of The End(the original, not that black void and bad cheese knockoff) which also allows you to play The Ground is Lava.
That might just be fun to build cliffside constructions on, as well as see what the underground is like. Unless you managed to make the lava go to bedrock.

@CyanGamerGirl They are asking if they can get a Mansion to spawn in their world they already had made before 1.11 was released and then played in 1.11.
Another thing to keep in mind is the mansions only spawn in dark forest biomes, as well. That's one reason I like to have larger biomes in my worlds.
But once you are running 1.11, load up your world, go exploring for dark forest biomes, and then do as Bilbo Baggins would do. Climb up to the canopy and have a look around. From what I have seen in images and videos, the mansions do seem to tend to be taller than the trees in that biome.
If it is a world you have been pretty involved in, then you should have a feel on where the current boundaries are that you have explored. If you are already situated in a dark forest biome, then going a kilometer beyond where you have walked will put you in new terrain.

Browsing the biomes in the wiki and how they are determined by temperature, I find the warm biomes are favored over any others(neutral and cold). It even makes it somewhat easy to spawn a canyon biome.
It just honestly feels like cold biomes are discouraged or set at a lower percentage chance to occur.
So it's no wonder that it is even harder to find icespike biomes.
While they should be rare enough to remain a treasure to see, which they are, they shouldn't be downright mythical.
I would like to see biome generation a bit more balanced as far as warm and cold climates go.

I rather agree that modders who want to "copyright" their work are rather bananas. In the end, unless they licensed their work from the IP holder, which would be Mojang/Microsoft, they have zero legal claim to their work. Mojang or Microsoft can at any time appropriate their work and incorporate it into the source game without even giving credit.
But Mojang has been rather awesome about giving credit to modders whose work they have incorporated into the source game, and even given some of those modders jobs with developing the game. To great benefit to us even.
No matter how much you dig into the source code to create a mod, you are still putting in a lot less effort into something than Mojang did in developing the game itself. And as far as I am concerned, trying to assume official and legal credit for something that just amounts to be window dressing is rather arrogant and borderline plagiarism.
Mods are great. They help keep a game fresh and provide a lot of new ideas. I would just as soon though that modders not try to assume their work is any more than what it really is, which is just a mod to the source game.
If you really want to have something grandiose to claim as your own, then talk to Mojang about licensing and creating a game out of Minecraft that you can copyright and even sell as your own. Just don't assume you have the inherent right to do so just because you made a clever mod which Mojang has total rights to.

Oh, Herobrine exists. He is the player that was in that world before you. He built, he explored, he dominated until he became too powerful for anything. Then he became bored. Disinterested in the world until you arrived. Now he watches from a distance, wondering if you will find his creations that he buried most carefully. Curious if you, too, may become too powerful for the world. And decide if he may just have to stop you.

Or into the player's inventory if they land on the player's shoulder. Both would be just as good. But for a bit of balance, especially with MP in mind, perhaps a limit on what they can pick up? Such as not being able to pick up loose blocks? Like a parrot could grab a diamond, but not a diamond block.

When I tend to end up with a lot of cobblestone from mining and I come across a desert to set up a settlement in, I will build 2m wide roads with the cobblestone, excavating all the sand and sandstone underneath. That gets me a lot of sand without turning the desert into an eyesore. (It felt wrong to build a road on top of sand which is supposed to be shifty and loose)
Same building philosophy was applied to any exterior structures, as well.

I have found a very large bug in my game (though I am unsure if it is just my computer that causes it).
All of the stairs... and I mean ALL types of stairs, normal, upsidedown, the lot, have lighting issues, where they are just black on the upper half, between the lower and upper step (reverse for upside down stairs)

This was also stated in Mojang's site for the snapshot announcement. You might want to check on what's already been shared as opposed to what hasn't.

Expect that to be the first thing to get modded when it happens. That said, if Mojang was able to set up a server farm of solid multiplayer action that had some competent moderators to boot griefers/trolls and added value (aka awesome content) and made people want to support such a server, I don't object to paying Mojang a monthly fee for something like that.

Notch's new game is most likely to be released in its Alpha and Beta stages for gamer support during its development. I would imagine that at least during the Alpha stage there shouldn't be a monthly fee to help encourage said gamer support. That is adequate time to get a feel for the basis of the game and have a better perception of how it is to be played and whether it will be worth some monies per month that aren't a certainty to happen.
Making up your mind now about such matters reeks of ignorance and closed-mindedness. You may want to get that checked out.

The taiga biomes finally have snow again, which makes two biomes with snow, now. So if you get lucky and get a taiga next to a snow biome, you get double the winter fun!
