I don't think its a bad idea, but I don't think its a good idea at the same time.
I don't know if it is just me, but I like the idea of getting lost in minecraft, having to survive, that is what maps are for. It would make the game to easy. But it is an arguable idea. Some want it and some do not. Maybe if a mod was added for it, it would suit your purposes, but I think it should not be added into the real game of minecraft. It would make the the game to easy.

I don't think it makes the game too easy because you need to ether 1. HAve cheats enabled (Which makes it too easy anyways) or 2. (If you are on a server) Be server Op. So I don't think it changes the vanilla feel at all, I just think it helps server Admins get around to where they need to go.

Because a world-wide server would require port-forwarding which is a pain in the butt for anyone who doesn't already know how to do it.

1. Will plugins be compatible with later updates (most of the time): Probably not, I'm assuming that each Plugin is going to have to update itself before it can be used after an update.
2. Will they be like bukkit plugins or will they let you add blocks and items?: I'm pretty sure you can add blocks and items, if not than there really isn't much of a point to the API.
3. Will it be EASIER to create a plugin than a mod? Yes, it will be easier, but how much easier? I don't know. Hopefully it will be pretty simple.
4. Will the 'Modding API' DEFINITELY be coming in MC 1.3.X?: They are going to try but it's pretty doubtful that they will end up putting it in 1.3 due to how much they already have added to 1.3 and (to my knowledge) they have barely even started the API.

Tell me about yourself: I've been playing Minecraft since Beta 1.3 and It's by far the best game I've ever played.
Why do you want to join?: I love Survival Minecraft and I want a good snapshot server.
What can you bring to this server?: Mature Fun, (Not Mature as in inappropriate, Mature as in not idiotic) and Enjoyable Pvp
Any other servers you play on?: Not really, I run a server myself but It's for my friends and I, it's not public.
