Uhm, I do my areas in different world because if I mess something up really bad, I can just delete my world.
The tunnels from the Intersection to the area are pretty darn long, true, but I have a shortcut (Well, I'm planning on having) one in every area.

what's the difference between that and a backup?

The best way to make a CTM is to make each area separately, then plonk them down into one map using McEdit. After they're all in approximately the right place, it's a good idea to then, and only then, link them up to intersections. It's the best way to do it! If you don't like an area, plonk in a new one with the same/ larger dimensions.

I learned this technique the hard way; re-starting a map is always a horrible thing to do.

Disagree. If you do it this way, you don't really will be able to make your areas fit together compact, making for a lot of travel time, and making it hard to make shortcuts (unless you want to just stick them in random places).

Shameless self promotion to keep you guys busy before the big releases come out I guess. Warning, this is a more slower paced and survival-oriented map.

    Welcome:

Hi, and welcome to my thread. This thread is about my CTM map, Laingral. You can ask questions or look for screenshots on this thread, and even download it. If you have any tips or suggestions
this also is the place to be! This CTM map is a bit traditional and survival-oriented. It does use some commandblocks for a few nice features, but don't expect over-the-top supermobs or stuff like that. I am trying to keep it close to vanilla.

    :Red: :Red: :Red:

    News:

Full release! Try it now. There might be a few bugs, not sure yet.

    :Red: :Red: :Red:

    About:

So, after a year, I'm proud to present my first CTM map. It took way longer then I originally intended,
but I'm happy with the outcome. It is my first my map, so far from perfect. The map can be a little difficult,
and I'm a jerk, so prepare for some real deaths...

Ok, I think that is it. Never released anything, so if I need to add stuff, let me know ;)

Ever played minecraft, and wished it had a goal? An objective to complete? Do you enjoy playing survival, but do you get bored quick? Then this is the map for you. Laingral, a CTM map, adds a goal and challenge to survival minecraft by providing you with a lot of different areas to explore. Final goal is to find and complete the Laingral (monument)

This map should provide a nice, but difficult introduction to the CTM genre for newer players. If you're really uncomfortable with custom maps, or are still pretty new to minecraft, I reccomend easy. The limited resources should make this map a less overwhelming experience to new players.

For veteran CTM players this map should also be a nice and difficult experience. If you are a total l33t pr0, I would recommend hard, but the map should be difficult enough playing on normal.

    Standard CTM rules:

    1. Find and complete the monument.
    2. Use wools found in fleecy boxes for the monument.
    3. Play on easy, normal or hard. (Map is balanced around normal)
    4. You can place, break or craft all you want.
    5. Survive in any way you can think of.
    6. You can craft the metal blocks for the monument.
    7. Do not move, pickup or craft ender chests.

    (version 1.1, changelog in download)

    Let's plays!

If you are awesome and LP too, let me know in some way, and if you're likely to finish it I'll add you.

What do you guys think of areas with void and skeletons?
I think it adds difficulty, but not sure if it is too much.

Well you can consider it a fact (not opinion, true fact) that void only increases difficulty if it encourages the player to take LESS gear since they might lose it all. If you force the player to take their best gear, you basically set the difficulty to hardcore. That doesn't make it harder, just lamer.

Hey all, just a quick update on SRION, it's almost done. I did what I call a "redstone test". I went through the map and tested all the redstone contraptions, bosses, etc and took about a page of notes on balances and tweaks. I'm about halfway done with addressing the notes. I'll finish the redstone test then clean up my circuit markers then the map will be ready for a full beta test.

    This triggered a question though:
What is your process for beta testing? Do you do limited beta test release? Skip the beta test and just put it out there?

My excuse it's not done yet.
I think i'd be done if I wasn't so sick this last week. I have been trying to get better ASAP too since my wife is going to have our 2nd kiddo any day now!

I was pretty dumb and started beta when I finished. So now I'm stuck waiting. W/e, need to wait on 1.8 anyway.

Thoughts on an invulnerable supercharged creeper named Sparkles that has a 26 minute fuse so you can have him as a creeper repellant/companion? (Creepers run away from him when he's trying to explode in snapshot). The only problems I see with him is that if you afk for ~26.666 minutes while standing next to him he'll go boom... also if you light him with flint/steel he'll be immobilized and inevitably explode eventually (~26.666 minutes = 32000 ticks, max fuse for creepers methinks).

Yeah. Or you can kill him too...

Beta tester guys are testing. It should be out in a few weeks as they finish. E: Oh, and mojang needs to finish 1.8 too, since I don't want to release a full map in an unstable game version.

Thats a really good idea, though in an actual CTM it would be more rewarding if you have un-tamed ocelots and the player had to grind for fishies.

This is the first intersection of my map and the last picture is of Intersection 2. Keep in mind that these areas are not complete, they need buildings and objects to help fill in the gaps and open areas in the caverns. Feedback would be appreciated. :D

If you were looking to make a mess you succeeded. I'm sorry, but you can improve a lot if you choose less contrasting blocks...

At first, I would imagine this as an annoyance to deal with as many of us player have gotten used to sprinting. I do see how this would add a challenge. Though, I'm curious at how you figured out to disable sprinting. I'm assuming you want it to be a secret to everybody?

Give everyone sprinting a slowness effect I'd say. There's a stat measuring it ;)

Not everyone is a "super elite CTM player" that never dies.. mistakes and unlucky events happen even in lower difficulty maps.
but unless it is a difficult map, I see absolutely no point in the addition of such a feature meant to add challenge.

No, I don't mean like turn it off in a random map... I mean, design a map around it, with the drops in mind. So you can count on the player having specific gear, and not getting tons of food right away so he can't regen all day long...
