-speaking for the majority of people here (I think)-

I would say that most people start out on single player but then after a few weeks (months, years or once they get the hang of the game) they usually branch out to multiplayer servers. (At least this is what all of the people I talk to do)

Yes, there is a rare chance of a humanoid hostile mob to spawn with any kind of armor, even chain. But for the ghast thing, I don't think they can fit. Ghasts are 3x3 and a portal is only 2x3.

Any hostile mob can spawn on any opaque block I think. Passive mobs can only spawn on grass.

On my old server, it was a faction server, all of my factionmates built a giant Christmas tree and decorated it with tons of things. Then we had chests that had a sign saying "A gift from _______ to _______" We weren't allowed to open them until we were all online on Christmas day. It is sad that that server closed a couple months ago. ;(

These are the only times when minecraft scared me.

1: My first week of getting the game, I thought I was safe over a Cliffside with a dirt wall blocking the other side and then I get shot by a skely and I get knocked off of the cliff and scream NOOOOOO!
2: When playing on hardcore mode/maps and something drops from the ceiling and makes a loud damage noise and you don't know where it came from.
3: Horror maps.

These are all that I can think of.

Its like if Mojang got rid of naturally spawning brown/black sheep and just made them all white. People get annoyed about the different colors that they shear when starting out. But if they got rid of it, everyone would notice and start raging about it.

Sponges, they're ugly, unobtainable, and all they do Is suck up like a 4x4x4 area of water, impossible to clean up. Thanks for ruining my fountains!

This is no relevance to the topic at hand.

They have people who code custom bukkit type plugins. Bukkit just allows servers to get premade plugins by other people on the bukkit forumpage.
