I build my new bases /mining camps on a raised ground around with a single 2 wide entrance for horses. I like to have it hooked up with a daylight sensor so that it closes at night. Then spiders are the only danger and they are not all that bad.

posted a message on Updating an old build
About three years ago someone posted a seed with a large mountainous island with a split down the middle, I loved it and started a base. I build a castle, a massive storage room, farms, and two villages for villagers. Problem is, so much of it is now out of date. Updates came and went, I have two villages because the first one was built before a villager update and it did not work as intended. Another update occurred and I had to alter the second one to add food in. Some redstone machines stopped working or became unnecessary. One is from before sheep regrew wool and so I had a sheep breeding machine. In addition over the course of three years I like to think my building skills and decoration ability has increase somewhat, leading to old bland buildings near sparkly new ones. In short, although I put a lot of work into the place and like the scenery, it is out of date, and so is the world it is in as algorithms for generation have changed at least twice.

Any tips on what to do if I want to renovate and old world? I could find a new island, but I like the old one. I want to plop the island into a new world with the new biomes but then the builds are out of date. Should I take out the tnt and make some buildings into craters to build again, or is it worth it to try to update buildings with new blocks and styles I like? If I remember my storage room is something like 125 by 125 blocks and so renovations are a daunting task.

I was hoping they could eat carrots from fields. between them doing that and villagers one could try to make a bunny spawning system.

Also leashing them currently acts as a way to keep them from teleporting, but that is kind of annoying.

posted a message on Time to pack up and move on
I had a island base from a few years ago, did a ton of work on it but as the world updates occurred it felt like I needed a new world to see the new things. So I found a suitable place and used mc edit to plop my island into a new spot. But even more updates have gone by and the island itself is feeling outdated as it uses largely old blocks and more than a few now broken redstone devices. I think it might be time for me to find a new island and start fresh.

How do you decide when it is time for a new start?

I like the idea of getting multiple piglets instead of just one each time. It would make them a reasonable thing to farm for bulk food.

I have a question and that is: Why are the rabbits persistent? They are wild like wolves and ocelots, not farm animals. Because of this, you kill them, and then they are gone. The only way to breed them is to tame them, but then they follow and teleport to you. They should be made to be non-persistent, that way they are more of a hunted mob rather than a farm mob.

I think I am for this idea. Have them spawn in whatever biomes are fitting like ocelots. If they always follow people around once tamed they will end up in lava, off a cliff, in front of a weapon swing, sailing off in your mine cart, or teleporting into blocks 99.5 out of 100 times.

This will make it much harder to clear up all of those random dark caves around my mob farm... oh well, back to the old method.

posted a message on What do you think of the new water temples?
I like them as they add something to the ocean rather than it being a big nothing with an occassional ravine. I don't like how they generate in, they seem to remove all terrain where they want to spawn. This left odd hald mines open to the ocean the in the first one a saw. It was like a giant perfect square cute out of a sea mountain to fit it, with mine shafts randomly meeting it but not flooding.

Couldn't you still get around the mining problem with tnt or creeper luring?

If you built with obsidian it would be blast proof. Time consuming to make, but blast proof.

I might have to to either that or build my bank vault in one of the temples so that I am close enough to them. Will they swim away or do they like to stay around the temple?

posted a message on What is needed in a proper nether base?
I see a lot of "what to build in a base" but what to build in a nether base seems like it could be an interesting question as it comes with some limitations.

Thus far what I want for mine is:

A chicken farm. As far as I can remember this should be one of the few infinitely renewable food sources in the nether.

A drawbridge of sorts, for those times I hit a zombie pig man and need my base shut off from any potential pig men. Maybe with a purge sequence at the end using dispensers and arrows incase things go wrong.

A small armory, for those times I inevitably die and need something to fight my way back to my stuff. Preferably with dispensers and a button so I just get hit with the armor and potions I would want. (I tend to die a lot there).

What do you think is needed in a good netherbase?

Build a villager inhabitable town in each biome (maybe not in some that just seem too similar) each with its own style befitting the biome. Connect them all with roads.

posted a message on What was your most exhausting and long project?
My storage room. I had just started a new world and was in a great place, but in the past my storage rooms had never been large enough, not this time. It is about 100x 100 and about 10 high in places. I carved it into the side of a mountain, it visably starts on one side and comes out the other. I went through picks taking that thing apart. I had to use even more as I dug some stone up just to replace it with nicer looking stone. I built it in sections as I needed them. Eventually had to build extra farms as I had invested everything into building it and nothing into farms. It still has remenent semi decorative farms from those days when I nearly starved a few times. I mined out a chunk of a desert to get the sand for the sandstone and glass I wanted. Spent a huge amount of time chopping trees to get the wood for chests, and structure.

I included farms to the perimeter of it and a mob farm to the center which took even more time. Now I am re doing the farms and mob farms because of updates.

A mob that is there for the purposes of making a game feel more alive. MC is actually one of the few games I've played that lacks ambient creatures, sadly. Simple things like birds and more ambient sounds (Similar to those cave sounds) would really help make the game feel more alive.

Birds would not even require that much work, they could simply reuse a modified version of the bat AI.

Exact reason I like jungles so much, the ocelots that tend to spawn in small outposts I make make the world feel more alive and moving. I should say I do like them to be useful in some way even if not all the time (squid and ink, ocelots to cats).

Slowly preparing for minecraft editting my island base into a new world when ever next patch hits. Not building much but playing around with the new villager AI. Good fun, need to scope out how I will build things to accomidate them.
