Edge, I've seen that you have posted several times about beginning gameplay and first off I'd like to say welcome!!!! I have a few suggestions for you.
In regards to your tool debate I would suggest using stone tools only as long as you have to. I saw you looked up how to branch mine and the different ways to do that so I assume you understand now. So I would suggest branch mining for iron and other resources until you obtain a sustainable amount.
For early game I would recommend using an iron farm! IRON FARM!?!?! WHAT?!?!?! They are NOT hard to build. It requires some doors and some villagers and that's about it. There are two iron farms I would suggest for early game.
One by DocM77 and the Zipkrowd -
Another by NimsTV -
The Nims TV one is easier to build HOWEVER the Docm77 version is more efficient, so decide whether you'd like something easy to build or something that will yield more. Up to you!!
You will need to get some villagers though which IS a pain but is totally worth it once you've done it. To transport the villagers you will need to use rails (That's the easiest method anyways) and they cost iron and gold so I suggest this contraption by ImpulseSV to get as many rails as you need to get your villagers around!
If you need a villager breeder I suggest either
UnaryBit
or
ImpulseSV
These are all EASY early game things that you can definitely do for pretty cheap! If you have ANY questions let me know! I am always willing to help!
There are infinite amounts of passive mobs. They DO respawn so anyone who says different should stop saying that.
New friendly mobs will not respawn if there are more than 16 peaceful mobs in the loaded chunks. INCLUDING SPAWN CHUNKS!
What are loaded chunks? How do they respawn? What are spawn chunks? Loaded chunks are the area around the player AND the spawn chunks. It's the area the game processes at any one time. No matter where you are in your world there will be a 16x16 area in your spawn that will always be loaded.
New mobs WILL respawn if there are less than 16 peaceful mobs in the loaded chunks. The best way to get new mobs to respawn is to go to your spawn chunks and kill all the mobs and wait around. To farm them however, you will need to change all grass blocks in your spawn chunks into dirt blocks or another type of block as peaceful mobs only spawn on grass blocks. Then create a patch of grass blocks inside of a biome that spawns peaceful mobs (Forest, Plains, Savanna, etc.) and watch for them to spawn.
The mob cap for peaceful mobs is REALLY low only 16 so any and all peaceful mobs NEED to die for this to work.
If you want to learn about it I HIGHLY suggest watching Panda's survival episodes 10 and 11. He goes through spawning mooshrooms but the concept is the same and he teaches in detail how it works.
oh and i meant to say in my post im studying in college for mechanical and structural engineering and i use minecraft to actually design buildings for my classes so my building actually look quite interesting sometimes
Would you mind posting pictures of some things that you have built?
Crafterus is a survival server that has been up for about a month and we have built a few things but the server is still in it's beginning stages. The server currently consists of 7 active players but we are looking to expand. We currently have a few larger builds finished/semi-finished but we have plans for very large builds coming soon and we're looking for help!
We have a few rules and requirements to join this server. You must adhere to all rules and requirements.
1. As a very obvious first, no griefing. On this server that means a few extra things. The spawn chunks contain a few things currently that are very important to maintain therefore you must be able to follow directions when it comes to spawn.
Our spawn is a mushroom island that contains our iron farm and will soon contain a peaceful mob farm, therefore you must; Not place mycelium, have any peaceful mobs, place any doors or create any spawnable spaces for hostile mobs.
If you are suspected of griefing you will be immediately removed from the server.
2. Must be willing to work well with others. We will have a large scale community project at all times and resources for that project will be community resources. As individuals we can create good things but as a community we can create amazing things!
3. Currently we are using Skype to communicate therefore you must have Skype. We have a group chat that we discuss our projects in.
4. Respect is key. You have to respect feelings, property and creative styles. One aspect of respect is that if someone is currently working on a project and you wish to adjust or fix it you must talk to that person first. It is imperative that communication is Number 1. Would you like to join our server?
5. Decency is very important. Understand what's acceptable and what is not. I do not have many rules because this rule is all inclusive.
So, would you like to join our server?
If the answer was yes then please fill out this application and post pictures of things you have built in minecraft.
APPLICATIONS WITHOUT PICTURES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

6. Will you be active?
7. What type of block do Mooshrooms spawn on?
