Internet problems perhaps? I had the same issue yesterday. It works ok now. Try rebooting your computer, and if that doesn't work, try rebooting your router or modem.

paintings only appearer pitch black when they have a block OVER it, that is, with a "ceiling" (or overhang), and with wider pictures when they have a "ceiling" on the right side of the painting. Also, the texture of grass from one biome to the other look really different, it's not a subtle change but a very noticeable one.
The screen is black for one or two seconds creating a new map. The lag dissapears when reloading the map or when the map is already created. Blocks one block over snow makes some very weird lighting problem.

Well, you should definetely use a square pattern, but since it's your texture pack, you could try playing a little with combinations of patterns, colors, but definetely a square edge.
I think it's ok for teenagers to drink under supervision. It also strenghtens the bond with their parents when they allow them to try it within boundaries.
