So I've finally decided to legitimately start my city (if you've seen my other two threads here). I'm doing a general layout right now, and taking a poll (still not sure how to do that though...).

So, do you guys think that this one looks cooler (octagonal, not sure how to lay out the houses/buildings. Any ideas?):

Or this (more square-ish, I have a better idea as to where to place buildings and the shape of them, but it is, in some people's opinions, much more boring):

Here's a brief description, so that you all may know some more information about the city (lore):

Arstenia is the Capitol city of the large country of Aristen, slammed right in the direct middle. this country had been founded at the beginings of the country, and had grown in size and advanced weaponry and military tactics that they branched out and became the main city of their new country (note, this is still medieval age). Being located in the forested inland of Aristen, Arstenia is well known throughout the world as a major lumbering city, which also brings in large waves of income. This makes it possible for Arstenia to also be the center of trade in the western half of the known world, being home to four banks and a gargantuan underground trade complex, covering nearly twice as much ground as the city itself.

Due to harboring three noticeable housing districts, two military districts, a lumbering district, farming district and trade district, the city decided to split itself into those seperate sections formally, dividing the city into eight parts, as well as the city square, being home to the capitol building and the home of the sovereign monarch of the country.

Due to this, the city is shaped as an octagonal (MAY ALSO BE REPLACED WITH SQUARISH) city, with guard outposts at each corner of the city walls.

So I was perusing through the other three (if you count the one from way back in Alpha) "Aesthetically Pleasing..." threads, and thought it would be interesting to have a Towns/Cities version.

I know this one will probably not get nearly as many posts, due to the fact that a lot of people simply don't want to invest in a huge project such as this. However, I'm sure there are a few of you out there who would love to do this, so let's get cracking, shall we? :smile.gif:

Here's the start of my city, Arstenia. So far, I've only got the four main roads leading in and out of the city, and the town square.

Finally, a bit of a discussion for you all to think about:

I know that most towns can look very nice when built around the natural terrain. But what about large cities? Do those look better when built on a flattened out space? Or when they're also built into the very hills and dirt (so to speak)?

So I got my first dog and I went back to my main home. I had a nice little fountain that flows down into a small pond. I'm playing with my new dog and look away for a second. Then when I turn around to look for my doggy, I don't hear or see it. Then I eyed my fountain. There is a certain part in my fountain where chickens and pigs get stuck a lot and drown. So that's when I started panicking. I pulled out my diamond pickaxe and started chipping away at the spot, hoping my doggy wasn't trapped in there. Then I started hearing the doggy whimper like he was getting hit or something. That told me he was down there and he was drowning. I did my best to try and get to him, but I was too little too late. Right when I cleared it away, I saw my doggy die. It was so sad. I didn't necessarily cry, but it made me extremely sad to see my first doggy go like that. I think Notch has officially added emotion to the game.

This is horrible, but iLol'd. Hard.

Okay so after watching a couple of videos, I came up with an idea for flat land. What I ended up doing is finding a world with a huge ocean, and I planted an enormous square of land in it. Yes?

So, another question for anyone who will answer it: For a capitol city, is it truly better to flatten it out, or build with the terrain?

Hm...anyone got any ideas on how to make an octagonal design? I keep trying it, but I'm not sure how to do each section of the octagon without weird-shaped buildings. :/

Personally I tend to thing in D&D terms. Towers, castles, villages, huts. Having spent years doing the D&D graph paper thing I find it really neat to be able to build in 3 dimensions.

I've played from 2e to 4e and DM'd twice! Planning those out on graph paper is fun. The roadblock is when I get into Minecraft. My first thought is "Oh boy! Ebberon, you are coming to Minecraft!"

After a few hours of laying things out and starting to build, my brain decides to rewire itself and send subliminal messages to me saying, "No. You can't do it. Seriously, that's a pretty crappy-looking housssSSSsss :SSSS: "

...or maybe it's the creepers. I haven't decided which.

I've tried a couple of different times, but I can't think of any good way to build cities or towns. I go onto Youtube (and these forums of course), and I see cities that are well laid-out and have nice designs to them, but every time I try to do it, it sucks. Does Minecraft just hate me for some reason? :Skeleton:

Also, is it better to use a flat world (such as one of Tyken's Test Worlds), or use a legitimate vanilla seed and flatten out an area?
