posted a message on Modern Library Build. I need your Input!
As a current architecture student (2nd year, BArch, Syracuse University), I want to say that images from Minecraft, no matter how well-rendered they are, will not get your portfolio in at architecture schools. Most, if not all, want to see how well you can take something in real physical 3d space and translate it by hand and pen onto 2d paper. They want to see that you can do observational drawing from real life (whether that's buildings, the lamp on your desk, a shoe, the view outside your window, whatever), not images of things you've built in Minecraft that you think are good architecture.

As far as I'm aware (source: architecture student), thatch roofing was not at all a common roofing material in the early Renaissance (late 1300s-early 1400s). Most roofs were made of terracotta and other stone tiling, if they had large pitched roofs at all. Aside from that it's a pretty neat little build.

posted a message on Is it possible to add Structures with Resource Packs?
Not sure what you mean structures? Do you mean actual builds? If so, then no; resource packs can modify textures, and sounds. They can't modify whether or not something has a light source, or the hardness of a block, or place blocks (in any place regardless). So basically you'd need a mod to place the blocks, but could use a resource pack to modify what the placed blocks look like (and potentially sound like).

Been about a half a year since this was active, and over a year since it was posted!

I updated the OP with my progress!

I didn't want to just announce that, but also a question: Should I post VTC in the WIP section? Should I wait until 1.8 is released (because of custom models being available to everyone) and then post it in WIP?

Is the WIP a place likely to get downloads and feedback?

WIP is probably your best bet for getting feedback/downloads. Dooo eeeettt

I appreciate the constructive criticism, but man. That's a bit harsh for what it is. I felt kind of sad after I read what you wrote. I was just using "Modern" and "Contemporary" is the loosest way possible- granted I wrote this over a year ago and I haven't played Minecraft for half a year, you're completely right.

I'm sorry it came off harsh, man. They're really good as Minecraft builds; I just get frustrated when people (especially in the MC community) throw around terms like "contemporary" "modern", and "architect/architecture", being a person who is directly involved in the study of that profession.

    Alrighty, let's see here...

    What is awesome:
    • All of the woods (planks, logs, items, all of it)
    • Your furnishing blocks (crafting bench and chest; I love love love these, they're probably my primary inspiration when I work on crafting benches and chests)
    • The tint you added to regular glass
    • Gravel (I'm always envious of people who make gravel that looks good)
    • Dirt (it's scoopable, instead of clumpy, which is always nice to see)
    • All of the plants
    • All of your CTM
What is on my wishlist for this pack (and many of these could totally be just personal preference, and not based on real evidence):
    • A variety in grass colors (if there is currently, it's too subtle for me to notice), per biome
    • Going along with that, grass ctm (it would make everything feel just a bit sharper; right now grass feels a bit dull)
    • More of a fluidity between grass block and grass plants, because right now grass plants seem really bright in comparison; maybe use CTM to create a few randomized versions of the plant that ease the transition?
    • A bit of variety with sandstone top, or maybe a new texture to it that's easier on the eyes; right now it seems like a super obvious tile, like you might see with many linoleum floor tiles
    • With the darker smooth grass, some of the flowers stick out as being really high contrast
This is a wonderful pack and it's always going to be on my go-to list for work to draw from when I'm clueless. So keep maintaining it!

Been a fair while since I've actually POSTED some images

Recoloured some of SB's old and current textures out of boredom, though I'd post the results here

I honestly like this colour palette over my old washed-out one. Thoughts?

I really like the new colors. Also that bookshelf is tasty.

I think this is a very bad idea...-snipped for brevity-

    Yes, I realize it now, error on my part. Just to clarify so I don't seem like an evil person who hates anyone younger than me, I'm only coming from the standpoint that, just as I think young children generally shouldn't be exposed to online chatrooms (for so many reasons, not just for the age-old idea that kids will reveal private information to predators online), I'm also of the mind that young children don't need smartphones, 18 year olds have no reason to binge drink as much as they do in college;

It's not that I think of myself as an elitist and think that everyone who is younger than me doesn't deserve anything; it partially stems from having worked with tons of children myself over summers and during the school years when I was in high school, and seeing that in general, children below the age of 12 often just aren't developmentally ready (and shouldn't be expected to be ready) to take on the internet and the whole world of people regardless of their (read: the rest of the internet's) mental development and maturity levels. I'm not saying everyone under a specific age is this way. I'm only saying that I don't think it was much more radical an idea than the other things posted in this topic.

Apparently, it's a snapshot from the forum on May 20th. But the TAU should have been there; even my WIP thread was transported over, and I only created that around the 18th or so.

Sorry to hear about the drive man; always have multiple backups! Also the ores look pretty nice, I love how you weave the ore veins into the cracks between rocks.

Great idea, ban everyone from the forums who is younger than 21, because from my experience you can only expect half-baked, childish and generally inferior content from this crowd. Oh wait, this includes you as well? That´s bad luck I guess, but let´s be honest here, it just takes that much time and experience to develop some artistic sense and acceptable manners to hang out around these forums. See you in a couple of years then.

No, I'm against this. Yes, the worst offenders are often children (but not always! One from the other day claimed to be 24 in his profile), but we also have a lot of very promising young artists here. I've seen posters claiming to be as young as 11 post worthwhile packs. I'm not willing to exclude them just to keep the forum clean. Sorry, but some measures are just not worth it in my opinion. :(

Okay okay, I see the fallacious logic behind it. Thanks.

It probably wouldn't matter if an age limit is put in place, many younger users would just fake an older age when signing up.

It helps more than you would think. Last year there were tons of people looking for work-arounds to view YouTube videos marked as "Adult/Mature Content/18+". We already have a feature to let us set what our DoB is on our profiles; so I don't see why we can't make it something required for new accounts.

[Just a little input which worth what it worth...] I-snip-

Wholeheartedly agree here. On a similar note with organization, something that I think would help to clear things up (coming in the new Forum, you can view it in its beta form here) is the option to add a tag/prefix to a post title. I think in the case of Resource packs, it might be a good idea to have people use prefixes for what their pack is (Fantasy, RPG, Simple, Themed, etc.), and then you would have a much easier time finding the bucket-fills among the serious work.

WIP is a very grey area; as Cynips and many others have stated, a pack will always be a WIP, all the way until the day the OP decides to discontinue it. Even those that are 100% complete (like Alvoria's Sanity) are always improving. So I think the idea of a "WIP packs go here" section is kind of flawed anyway.

Also, unpopular opinion incoming, but am I the only one thinks that the forum should have an age requirement? It seems to me that a larger majority of bucket-fills are posted by the very younger crowd.
