posted a message on Minecart Track Help
    Quote from Vladezz

Since Notch fixed the bug in update 1.6 which allowed minecart boosters to function, rendering them obsolete, I've been having a really hard time getting my minecart up hills successfully. When using multiple powered rails on an upward (or downward) slope, my minecart gets stuck and stops immediately.

Can someone tell me how to fix this? :blink.gif:

If your cart is stopping immediately and not falling backwards, either, it's probably on top of an unpowered Powered Rail--those stop carts.

With the increased Powered Rail speed boost added in 1.6, you only need a Powered Rail every fourth rail up the slope. It also helps to have the cart at or near top speed when the incline begins. To go from 0m/s to 8m/s you need 3 Powered Rail segments together.

In other words... read the wiki.

Sometimes when deleting a world it doesn't actually delete the chunk files, which means the data for all the stuff you've built in the world still exists on your harddrive. If you give a new world the same folder name then it will load up the save data from the 'deleted' world. It happened to me once when minecraft crashed and my world vanished from the list. I lost my inventory but not my world.
Funny thing, I explained this in a different thread just yesterday. So it's not all that rare.

Yeah, saw this happening with Bukkit's multiworld support, too. I went to my "World 2" and saw, in the distance, my skybridge from "World 1". It disappeared as I moved closer to it, however, and the chunk was reloaded.

posted a message on How Do You Feel About Block-Manipulating Mobs?
Well, you're talking two different kinds of mobs, so I don't know how to vote.

    1. Monsters that are out to harm, and destroy blocks in the process, ie, Creepers.

In my opinion they're fine in single-player but I prefer to disable their terrain/structure damage in SMP, since the damage they cause to terrain accumulates over time and because one persons' irresponsibility can damage another persons' structures.

    2. Mobs that do what players can do

If there are to be mobs that can build on their own, I think it'd be important for them to stay in defined areas so their construction doesn't mean the destruction or manipulation of players' structures. But that would mean they're some way's away in chunks that would normally not be loaded, so wouldn't be able to work anyway unless the server software has to open all their chunks, too, and support their work 24/7--a potentially significant burden on server processing and memory use.

"But why would you be able to swim up a waterfall? That's completely unrealistic." <-- Notice this is a typical anti-water-elevator argument, just modified a little.

    See http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AscendedGlitch

Hmm. Good point, when phrased that way. I won't argue against them removing that capability. Players and mobs hould still be able to swim up still water, though, which mobs also seem to be having trouble doing since 1.6. Which I honestly can't explain, since ascension rate seems fine in natural lakes/oceans.

Of course the developer has the right to do what they want, but that has nothing to do with our right to discuss a change to the game we percieve as bad. Maybe some discussion about it will change what the developer wants to do. Maybe not. What I'm saying is there's no logical reason to remove water elevators. Boat elevators don't affect people who don't use them, and it was a bad idea to fix them. Not only are they not usable now, boat physics in general are less fun. The developer can do what they want, but I would think making changes that are fun for the players would be better business than making changes that reduce the ammount of fun in the game.

I'll agree only in so far as the way they "fixed" it seems to have effects spanning much farther than boat elevators and water ladders.

Either the entire fix or part of the fix seems to have included making the downward force of falling water stronger, which has had the effect of making it so mobs can't swim up even short waterfalls before they drown. Even as a player the ascension seems noticeably slower than before.

In fact... it seems they can't even swim up my mob elevators which has layered still water. I had a creeper drown in one yesterday instead of swimming up it.

Edit: Or not. Further testing reveals the mob elevators are working. Still not sure about the drowning traps, but it did kill a pig just now... maybe that's working again, too.

    Whut?

Although... the combined references of the moon and Creepers gave me an idea. The "Creeper Moon". Every X days, or at random, a Creeper's face is seen on the moon and during that night only Creepers spawn. :ohmy.gif:

posted a message on Making the argument for Minecraft
I've put 600+ hours into my SMP server, basically just moving from one project to a more ambitious project, learning as I go and utilizing what I learn in my next project.

First came tunnels, then a Helms Deep-like fortress, then a skybridge, then a huge dome, then a mountaintop outpost, then a lighthouse/mobtrap/farm, and now--in a fresh world--a fortress encompassing everything I've learned.

If you're after some great purpose, there really isn't one. Its appeal is mostly the appeal one would get from Legos. To build. To create. And Minecraft adds in the Survival/collection element to make building a bit more rewarding.

I lol'ed when I read the new posts in this thread.

"Not really. Design and development of this game isn't a community decision. If something behaves in such a way that it goes contrary to the developer's vision of the game, the developer has every right to remove it. What we think is irrelevant."

Pick the three things you most like about Minecraft. Pretend Notch removed them. Would you still think that way?

If they had the same "unintentional" feel as boosters, boat elevators, water ladders, the south/west lava/fire "rule", etc., no... absolutely not. I'd never use and certainly not rely on anything that functionally obscure.

The most obscure thing I've come to rely on is mobs being able to swim up falling water, which by all accounts seemed completely intentional. And then they change the behavior of that with 1.6 and, no.. I'm not happy about that at all. There was never any indication or even suggestion that was unintentional.

I'd assume no since you're making money on providing someone else's licensed goods, but "raffles" are kind of weird... maybe they're in a gray area. I'm not sure anyone here would be able to tell you for sure. Might be best to contact Mojang.
